I just shot my first whitetail yesterday morning at about 7:30am with my savage 110 in .25-06. There was a buck chasing 2 does and none of them gave me a good shot so I was a bit bummed out, lowered my gun and then I saw a nice big doe standing perfectly broadside at about 150 yards. Offhand shot went through the left shoulder and through both lungs. She didn't even make it out of the field she was in
Awesome hunt Mr. Spomer! I just took my second buck ever last week with a 7mm-08. My brother is visiting from out of state and we’re going after a doe. The best part of hunting is the time spent with people you care about most.
Awesome video, here in North Dakota. My first hunting season this year, I used my grandpas 25-06 117 grain. First shot and put the buck down where he stood. Awesome experience!
I have also watched the video on RSOTV and it is even better with additional footage, more banter and all the other things you like about Ron's video's.
Ever since I was 13 I always said if I decided to move out of Michigan I would go to South Dakota. Love the peacefulness of the area you're in and as always it's great to see a successful hunt. Two more years in the Marines and I can get back to enjoying my time out in the field hunting.
Just got back from the Bob creek park in Southern Alberta. 8 years waiting for an antlered Mule tag. Some wind you couldn’t walk in. Hunting with a cousin serving as a Canadian Officer on a tight schedule. Nothing for three nights in a backpack camp. Your opening line made me smile even though I feel all of my 58 years.
Thanks for taking us along, Sir! I have not seen many here....but I have a few more days, the .25-06 or the 6mm Rem will speak again if I can find a buck up here in NH (I am about half and half with these two rounds, using them on nearly all 'my' deer...so your title spoke loudly to me) ... Tracking without snow can be a pretty tiring effort, but it's my usual M.O. in these New Hampshire woods. Thank you for all your videos and your conversations with us all.
My dads 25-06 is an old Ruger M77 originally chambered in .257 roberts. When he bought it used in about 1992 you could see the .257 stamped over with xxxxxxx. Great little rifle- it has the darkest walnut I’ve ever seen on a Ruger- it’s damn near black. He calls it “deers’bane” lol
Nice hunt.. I hate the wind like that. Nice buck! I have a 6mm in the case and a Howa 25-06 that I am building right now. Thanks for covering these great cartridges.
Great job as always Ron ! i learn a heck of a lot from you the 7mm/08 my 1st bolt scope savage combo i purchased over 25-30 years ago and it sat on the shelf for a long time i thought it was a fluke. But I'm glad i got it from you what a truly great cartridge this is and continues to be, and it inspired me the get the .260 rem and the 338 fed and a trusty mini-Mauser in .243 as well a 308 win semi, wow; what A Family in a Case!
Its always fun the be in the outdoors hunting... I've been in a tree stand on a monster game trail running into a big oak bottom since about 2 hours before legal shooting hours and when I'm thinking about leaving I like to pop in the ear buds and watch a hunting video to give me a little motivation... Y'all just recharged my batteries with this one and great video as always keepem coming brother!!!
Great footage love following your channel. Love shooting the 25-06 was my first gun, Ruger M77 and still use it today. As a matter of fact just bought my oldest son (9) his first hunting rifle in 25-06, Tikka T3.
We had 2 days of our trip with 60mph winds. Even with a 6.5-300 I think 200 yards would have been the top of my range that day. Couldn’t even stand without getting blown over.
Congratulations on a great hunt. Fantastic video. Would have been perfection if the actual shots and impact on the deer had been caught, but things happen. And maybe utube has something to do with that, what they allow shown.

Rich, thanks for the comment. I made the switch to BARNES bullets nearly 30 years ago. I've used them across a wide range of diameters for all of my big game hunting. Until something better comes down the pike, make mine Barnes.
I love ALL of your videos and am a devoted subscriber. My question is whether the 2nd/3rd kill is very sportsman-like? Just seems to be an easy win after the first kill. "Fair chase" is relative to the hunter and I'm not knocking you at all. Maybe that would be a good video topic in the future. How does one define "fair chase" and how does Ron Spomer define fair chase. Hunting ethics essentially. Would love to hear your input. Thanks for everything Ron- keep it up sir
Wow. Not great calibers for that wind I spent 30 years in Kansas. Always hunted from the ground laying down in a hedge row when the wind started howling. That's the best we found plus didn't shoot more than 150 yards. 7mm mag. 150 grain .
Looks like you are carrying that Dakota single shot 25-06. I was all excited about the Dakota until I had one in hand. It's open pistol grip doesn't appeal to me. I like the ruger number one and actually the Winchester 1885 a little better, but I am not so excited about the straight grip on the 1885. The browning B78 appeals to me more but I have read so much about the trigger on them, that I am a little leary of them. I was looking for an 1885 though, and on a deer hunt by miles city about 8-9 years ago, I saw the lever of an 1885 sticking out on a gun rack in a store there. It turned out to be a rifle from a special run of browning B78's built on the newer 1885 action with the newer simpler trigger, or so I was told. It was a 30-06 so I was hesitant at first as I already had a number of 30-06's, but when they pulled it out, I had to have it. It had a gorgeous feathercrotch walnut stock on it and a 24 inch barrel instead of the standard 28 inch of the 1885 (plus the pistol grip stock of the B78), so not only is it beautiful but it is also quite compact. I asked if they had any others in z different caliber, and they had one other. It had a 26 inch barrel in 300 win mag and a lighter colored stock with extensive fiddleback figure. It took a long time for me to talk myself out of not taking both, but I don't really have a need for a 300 mag. I have regretted that decision many times since. I have only seen one other rifle from that run, a 270 with 24 inch barrel online. I should have got it but I am leaning towards a 28 inch barrel in 270 for the extra velocity. I haven't bought a standard 1885 in 270 because of the straight grip on them. I did have an 1885 low wall in 22-250 that I was seriously considering having it bored out to 25-06 but I prefer the ejector of the highwall, to the extractor of the low wall. I ended up selling the rifle. I wish now that I had done it. The slim light compact low wall in 25-06 would have been a dandy to carry deer hunting. I have contemplated getting a 28 inch barreled 1885 in 270 and restocking it with an exquisite feathercrotch blank I have, but making it a pistol grip stock, but the cost has detered me so far. Your Dakota is a nice looking rifle, I hope you get to enjoy many hunts with it. Nothing like hunting with a classic, good looking, single shot rifle.
Must be nice to have private land ware buck deer 🦌 actually come into a field during daylight. Come to ware I live in Wilmington NY. Only way I see deer like that is a 3mile plus hike into the mountains. Urban Deer don't dare move here during the day. But the deer deep in the mountains do move in daylight ,not getting the hunting pressure
Waidmannsheil with the buck and the doe! How does it work with tags overthere. Are the populations monitored? Is there a quota of does and bucks that have to be culled? And who decides how big that quota is? Overhere in the Netherlands there is a weekend in february when all the hunter count all the roe deer in their fields on two evenings and a morning. That number is used in combination with the amount of cover and suitable habitat for the deer to calculate how many roe deer there approximately are (van Haaften methode). I think that this number is most of the time a underestimation. Thanks in advance. With kind regards, Gaatze
Regular monitoring by conservation officers balanced by landowner complaints and tolerance of deer numbers. Then limited tags sold per sex and species.
The problem is most of the time in my neck of the woods you can’t go prone because usually the grass or brush is too high.. your forced to go free hand or sitting down or kneeling
Ron, you guys hunting north of Bear Butte, by Nisland or Newell, SD? Looks pretty familiar…. Me and my sons are hunting the same area for some does for the freezer. Same conditions here if not hunting that area. (thought we saw the Butte in the background)
Nice vid as always. I noticed the buildings in the background. Did you limit your shots to specific angles? I hunt on suburban land and I’m very cognizant of my shooting lanes. I read your article on hunting in populous areas and did use Vmax on a doe with good effect.
Did you notice the high shot wound on the first buck at 2:15? He must’ve been in exhale during the impact. Great hunt Ron! It was hard to tell the ranges, was the 6-pointer not a good shot?
It wasn't being fired. The was after the buck had been shot. George was just coming out of the rifle after watching the buck to make sure it wasn't getting up again.
I just shot my first whitetail yesterday morning at about 7:30am with my savage 110 in .25-06.
With kind regards,
Gaatze
Regular monitoring by conservation officers balanced by landowner complaints and tolerance of deer numbers. Then limited tags sold per sex and species.
Ttsx are the best hunting bullets
I like the video for the most part and love all your other videos especially on different calibers. Why the actually kill wasn't filmed though?
Half tame deer and no roos how good!
Gone with the Wind (balistic version)
Great video guys. Love both of those cartridges. PA opens this morn. 2506 in hand. Salty Army
The problem is most of the time in my neck of the woods you can’t go prone because usually the grass or brush is too high.. your forced to go free hand or sitting down or kneeling
I sit and use portable shooting sticks.
@@RonSpomerOutdoors that is a great way to go.
6:16 What was that? 9:06 Magnificent buck all the same.
6:16 was where we had to break away from the impact shot to avoid violating YT rules and risk censure.
@@RonSpomerOutdoors I am sadly not surprised. Guess it's all that "freedom" we have here...
Again 👍👍👍
How far was the shot with the 243?
Why no impact video on the buck?
I was really hoping to see the DOE
anyone know what rifle ol George has?
Ron, you guys hunting north of Bear Butte, by Nisland or Newell, SD? Looks pretty familiar…. Me and my sons are hunting the same area for some does for the freezer. Same conditions here if not hunting that area. (thought we saw the Butte in the background)
Yes!
Hey Ron, at the start of the video............were those partridges in a pair tree?
Those partridges in the pear tree were actually sharp tail grouse in a Russian olive tree.
Rifle had no recoil
Nice vid as always. I noticed the buildings in the background. Did you limit your shots to specific angles? I hunt on suburban land and I’m very cognizant of my shooting lanes. I read your article on hunting in populous areas and did use Vmax on a doe with good effect.
Need to remain situationally aware of building and road locations. The camera lens makes things look much worse than they actually are.
Yes, we waited until the deer were clear of the buildings in background. They were about 1/3 of a mile away.
Did you notice the high shot wound on the first buck at 2:15? He must’ve been in exhale during the impact. Great hunt Ron! It was hard to tell the ranges, was the 6-pointer not a good shot?
After the harvest, they say, "he's beautiful!!". Im thinking "he _WAS_ beautiful!!"🙄do you have these thoughts RON?? *WYD?*
6:15 1st time seeing a rifle that doesn't recoil ! LOL
It wasn't being fired. The was after the buck had been shot. George was just coming out of the rifle after watching the buck to make sure it wasn't getting up again.
Welcome to south-western Alberta , quit complaining ! 🤣😂🤣
Why didn't you show the impact on the buck
Trying to stay out of YT jail.
@@RonSpomerOutdoors sad times we live in.
At what distances you shoot this buck
George shot it at around 175 yards.
@@RonSpomerOutdoors Thanks
What area are you in? Those are some big bodied deer.
South Dakota near Spearfish.
I love hunting with buddies. It's just as fun, but less work when they tag the deer.
