In late 2015 I decided I wanted to get into PC gaming. I went to Costco and got a HP tower with an i7-6700 16gb of RAM, and a 1tb hdd. Don't remember what it cost but it was a good deal. Got it home and slapped a 256gb SSD, a 650w PSU and a GTX 970 in it. Decided after a month that I wanted to build a custom PC from the ground up, so I returned the tower to stock and took it back to Costco. They took a quick look at it, asked me if there was anything wrong with it (I said no I just didn't like it), and gave me all my money back without issue. For that reason I wouldn't hesitate to buy anything from Costco, PCs or otherwise.

Thinking about doing this with the MSI laptop I bought in 2021 that is literally falling apart.
I've been using a Dyson purifier/heater for over a decade. I am actually on my third one but still only into it for about $450. The current model I have now costs $530 on sale at Costco. The original Pure Hot and Cool model I had cost around $300 and then I've had to pay a total of $150 additional for the two replacements. When the current one craps out (and it will), I'm taking it back to costco and I'll get the next model for like $100. The reason Costco has had to price them at nearly the same cost as on the Dyson website is because of all the returns they've done on them over the years.
I also tried 4k for a week courtesy of Costco. Then I returned the TV and got a 2k monitor. I can't afford the data for the 4k content and I would rather have half the pixels at 3x the framerate.

I have a similar story, but with Sams Club. I bought their floor model HP Envy desktop on clearance in late 2017 with similar specs, but its HDD was 2tb. I placed in a 1050ti, and it served as a great beginners gaming PC for the time. When I was ready to build my own, I gave the HP to a friend who wanted something that could run Skyrim with mods. That's about all the PC gaming she does, so it should last her long enough that she shouldn't need anything newer until Microsoft stops supporting Windows 10

When I wanted a newer tablet I bought it at Costco because of the return policy. I wasen't happy of the performance for the price, returned it no question asked.
I didn't hesitate the next year to try a newer model and it was amasing for the price. Still works 6 years later. You definetly have to wait for a good deal though. Often it's overpriced.

I know you're joking, but there are people I know, in my gaming outfit, who live in the southern hemisphere over in Australasia land, and they're legitimately considering a trip to the US to visit, hanging out with other gamers, maybe spend some time touching grass, and buy PC upgrades. Because a ticket from Kiwiland or Emutopia is cheaper than the import duties he'd have to pay, and due to free trade agreements, they can buy a certain amount of stuff tax-free (enough for a gaming PC) and bring it back. A number of Southeast Asian and Asian Pacific Island nations are in a similar situation, though most of them also have average per-capita incomes that are too low to take advantage of such a deal anyway. Still, wealthy people in Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam etc can take a trip to Honolulu and make out like bandits buying electronics, despite those same electronics being manufactured in the region, some of them even in Vietnam and Thailand now, as people move away from manufacturing in China.

Lot's of the PC/Laptops sold on Costco usually have double the RAM as the standard found on Amazon or other resellers. Also they have a 2 year warranty, a easy 90 day return and their own technical support. I'd like to see any other retailer match that.

I’m probably going to be buried under a lot of other comments, but I do feel like I should clarify a couple things. Also personal bias, since I did buy my laptop at Costco.
    1) I’m guessing selection is dependent on store; the lowest spec ones for gaming I see at my Costco are rtx 3050s. So maybe that’s why you ended up with a 2050 (def don’t have that here).
    2) Costco has great seasonal sales. For example, for 2 months starting in January, they were offering MSI rtx 4050 laptops for 600 dollars. Sometimes there’s discount on top of discounts; I got my Lenovo legion 5 i7 13900 hx rtx 4060 with 32 gb ram and 1 tb of storage, 2560x1600 165 hz screen for $1,000 dollars. So your mileage will vary depending on the month you buy, and good stock will run dry quickly.
    3) The 90 Day return policy is godly. As long as you ever a receipt, paper or digital, they’ll take back the laptop as long as it’s relatively okay(if it looks like it got run over by a truck not sure if they’ll take it back 😅). Have buyers remorse 85 days in and want your money back instantly? Return to the store with no questions asked. It’s also great because if you settle on one model of laptop that’s on sale and the and another retailer like Best Buy discounts a different brand or spec 2 months later, you can return the Costco one and buy your desired laptop. It’s essentially a 90 day buyers insurance.
Anyone here’s some insight why someone would buy electronics at Costco. Fun video to watch, but I do feel like it does put Costco in general in a bad light when I’ve had the complete opposite experience, so wanted to share.

I agree that if buying a computer at Costco you need to know what you want and just wait for something similar to come in at a good price. Costco is a bad place to if you don't know what you're looking for and need it that day because the selection is so variable.
Also Costco does not seem to care the condition of returned merchandise. I once had someone in line in front of me at customer service returning an above ground pool kit, clearly after it had already been installed. It was several piles of mangled metal spread over many of the big item carts with a bonus cart for the pump. It looked like when they disassembled it they just ripped it apart as all the screw holes had been torn open into jagged wounds, every panel was bent, dented and warped. He was successful in his return. I've always returned things in good condition but they will take anything back from what I have seen and that is a huge bonus as a customer.

Thanks for this very detailed breakdown of your experience. It makes sense that their selection is variable considering how they buy stock. I must have caught it at a bad time.
It checks out that you have to go in knowing what you want, because the crappy systems seem to kinda build up in their inventory and it’s up to you to sift through it.
I’ll keep an eye on the sales and then might do a follow up video and another device.
Thanks again for all the info. 👍

Costco is actually quite popular for electronics, thanks to their generous return policy. Even on some items like TVs that have a more limited return policy, they still beat out almost every other retailer. I had a Samsung 34" monitor develop some dead pixels after 6 months of use and they took it back without issue. As others pointed out though, the best deals will always be at the warehouses themselves and they are often specific to each location. Obviously though, since they are not an electronics-focused retailer, don't expect the in-person selection to be all that great anyway.

Referring to my local Costco - I’ve never bought a laptop from them but rarely do they ever have what I’m looking for. But they’ve had reasonable prices for laptops normal people might buy, often with more ram/storage than you’d find at price parity elsewhere. It was a back to school special and they sold out fast. Still feels like a great laptop for what we do with it, not a gaming laptop but Costco gets some deals… just need to look.

Acer used to be amazing. in 2008, i bought an amazing Acer Monitor. It was 23 inch 1080, 5ms, DVI, HDMI, VGA Audio in and out, Built in speakers, matte finish and great color 60fps. Had it from 2008 - 2021. It never let me down.
I went monitor hunting for about 2 months buying and returning monitors. It was 80 bucks brand new! Any monitor with those specs were at least double. I even returned the ones i got from micro center all those years ago. I grew up with microcenter just a town away.
However, times change and when acer was bought by Dell in 2012ish it was never the same impressive company as when Acer first started. My first pc (bought with my own money )was an Acer as well.

Here's why you shouldn't buy any gaming PC from Costco. The first thing you notice in this laptop... RTX 2050. The rest of the specs? Probably for a much higher spec GPU. Desktops are the same way. They buy the middle of the road GPU and pair it with the expensive other specs, price it high, then heavily discount it.

costco sells laptops at MSRP because there isn't a lot of wiggle room for their wholesale price. they also get custom models just for them. what you really have to watch for is the 9 or 0 at the end of the price. a 9 means its restocking, and a zero means its on clearance and will be going down in price every 10 days until it sells out and they aren't getting them back. you can get some pretty good deals for prebuilt gaming PCs that aren't going to be upgradeable if you pay attention at your local store. they also sometimes have hard drives and other tech for really cheap prices just to get rid of them.

My dad bought his current desktop PC at Costco. I can't speak for the quality of the machine, but the customer service is genuinely quite good. I think it might be time for him to replace the entire thing, though, given its age and the fact that he never quits complaining about it being too slow (mechanical hard drive - go figure).
Speaking of Costco, each time I go shopping there, my cart is only about 1/10 full because I'm only buying for one person. I sometimes feel out of place seeing everyone else's carts, most of which are are loaded up with enough food and supplies to last them through a zombie apocalypse and the fallout from nuclear war.

most people who buy it from costco do so because of the return policy and customer service, we had a toshiba tv die in about 1.5 years, they sent a repair guy and that did not fix it, costco took it back and issued a full credit towards a new tv. I recall people taking advantage of the generous policy, and costco having to walk it back a lot because some people were using it to upgrade devices rather than for genuine issues.

I think that CostCo has the bulk buy problem: they are buying pallets and pallets of this stuff, and if it doesn't sell fairly quickly, it very quickly becomes out of date. Where they might be able to hold a pallet of t-shirts for a year, holding electronics is how you lose a lot of money.
Basically, only buy from them when you know it's really on special, otherwise you paid too much.

I just got done repairing an old rig with an i5-4460, GTX 1080 and 12gb of mismatched ram. Going over the parts availability it would cost about $500 to build it from scratch and it can surprisingly still handle most games pretty well, Ghost of Tsushima can run maxed out at 1440p with FSR3-quality and maintain 50fps.
