Man... that Galaxy Quest video is probably the reason I watched this video. This video is definitely not the reason I'm watching the next one. But man... so long as I vaguely remember that Galaxy Quest video, I'll be watching.
Ahh, Bach, good taste Sir. I recommend you listen also to the violin version records of your used BWV 1052 by Netherlands Bach Society or Bach-Collegium Stuttgart (my favorite Violin enterpretations of Bach), its very refreshing. If youre a sucker for harpsichords then maybe give the Partitas a listen (BWV 825-830) Great Video btw!
Yes, we must. It’s a form that is ripe with potential and should be recognized as such. Years ago I organized a gathering of essayist (including some you mentioned) to speak at a film festival, in hopes of validating the form and it’s creators somewhat. While the writing side has mostly matured, I’m looking forward to seeing where people push the video side of the form. Using the language of cinema (aka editing), to convey ideas. The most recent person I heard was Studio Ersatz trying to explore this notion and have their essays be more formally inventive. Your exploration was playful, thorough and thought provoking. Fun juxtapositions (ie Janus Films). The left and right hemisphere synthesis. Great essay
The video is great, I think it handled its meta aspects well without becoming grating. I do however, though I’m sure you’d like that someone found it contentious, struggle with the idea of the essayist as a devoted heretic. Where I find that troubling is that the transcendental doesn’t seem accessible by mere variation or even infinite evolution of infinite ideas. Narrative and Essays to me share an ontology in that they’re both seeking and exploring the truth. Not that they need slavish convention or hegemonic unity in opinion, but it doesn’t seem sufficient that our goal be to merely push bounds. The truth is all encompassing, you can engage ‘it’ in a vast variety of ways, but to put that variety as the end of the essay seems to miss our chance for the transcendent.
wow, this was really meta, now I shall try to make a standered youtube comment to reflect the meta nature of this video... Hi Josh, great video! just kidding your a jew 😂
Ok, Im on 2 and just learnin THE MAN's been hidin shit from me, and everyone tellin the truth aint sayin NOTHIN!?! Ouch 3: 🐜☀🌋☁🌊👼=🎥 or smt? I'm on 4 now. What'd you say? I wasn't listening. 5: now you're makin jokes? I have the sense you're makin fun of me. Oh, shit! You're reading these?! I'm just using your comment section as my personal notepad, bro. On 6,7 now….. 。o○Oooh, shameless. Cuz yur unique, but not sayin anything I could understand if I tried, you are doing ART, yet mostly re-interpretepolating mostly?? Oh god, my head MHz now. 17:58 "The quality of our thoughts is inextricably linked to the quality of our modes of expressing those thoughts." I like that. And agree, non-linear video editing should be primary education. Very entertained, I am. Much thought, provoked has been 🐣🔨 Thanks for the essay essay
Anything from morbid zoo is great, but I'm curious if something like her pretzel jack video would be considered an essay? I personally consider it is because I think it's absolutely fucking brilliant, but it's not as long as some of these. It's like a little little baby essay but it's got more in it than a lot of the essays I've seen. I never even watched the show she's referring to, and yet I've watched it over a dozen times and learned new things about myself each time.
Fantastic video - except for the Ben Shapiro jump scare, boo Would have been curious to hear your argument also incorporate academic video essays, although I understand why you wouldn't address them as they, for the most part, exist outside of UA-cam and are unsurpiringly different in tone (but also often more open to formal experimentation)
This form requires an understanding of its parts (writing, imagery, sequence). Otherwise, all art becomes colour and movement without meaning. "Language is a virus" with the meaning of meme no longer holding any meaning.
8:05 It's always important to remember that it was called UA-cam because it's you making the video; Not AiTube because it's a machine prompted to make slop for views.
I am the enemy of thought. Do you have the wherewithal to f1ght me, the enemy of thought, in real life? Of course you do not, video essayist! How could you possibly? The very notion is laughable, that you would find the content of my mighty fist worthy of your wordplay!, when there are so many moving pictures for you to ponder! Ha! Ha ha!
this is very good.

Thought provoking and magical as always, merci beaucoup Mr. From Xbox Live

This essay is contentious and I don’t agree with all its provocations! In short, great essay!

About twelve minutes in and I realized this feller has an impressive Magma collection
Collage isn't art? Since when? If I cut letters from magazines and write a poem, is that poem not mine?
brb going to go be a video essayist now

very interesting and informative.
I was recently looking for a book on video essays and was surprised to find precisely none on Amazon. Have you considered writing one, Josh?
The more I think about what I try to do on here, the less enjoyable it becomes.

Incredible video (in a good way)
I think the main issue people have with video essays is that they now feel like they're waisting our time.
Great video essay of video essays
I really like what you do, keep it up!

There is Nerdwriter. Then there is everyone else. A bit like The Beatles, really.
Great, as always, Josh ❤

Just beacuse video essays steal they don't become less artistic for that. Every kind of art steals from the works that came before it.
