I love this Credits theme. As a kid I was SO happy to finally beat the final boss, and then this tune was the perfect reward! I spent hours figuring out the chords and the "keyboard part" aka channel 1 on my dad's old keyboard. Good times.
I was addicted to this song when I was a kid. I was a big MJ fan too (my whole family was). The chords and melodies send me to another place. MJs music did that for me too but I never questioned the coincidence. The music just made Sonic 3 so ethereal to me. In addition to the level design and detail it inspired me to imagine myself in the world of the game. Inspiration overload.
Just found this channel, great stuff! Wasn't it confirmed that this was the only piece of music written by Michael Jackson himself that made it into Sonic 3?
Much more made it. Carnival night, Knuckles' theme, Mini-boss theme, launch base, ice-cap ( though to be honest it's a fusion of smooth criminal and the jetsons' "hard times" ( mainly smooth criminal's rhythm and percussion with hard times' main melody). Plenty of Michael's music made it in.
In an interview for the MJCast, Brad Buxer actually claims that this is a melody that he wrote himself, and later played with Michael to create Stranger In Moscow.
There’s a lot of debate as to which of the MJ songs were actually written by MJ himself. Out of all of them it’s safe to say Buxer made Icecap due to its similarities to the Jetzons’ Hard Times (for which Buxer was the keyboardist) and if his claim about writing Stranger in Moscow’s melody is true, probably the credits as well. This leaves Carnival Night, Launch Base, Knuckles’ theme/miniboss (The former is a stripped down version of the latter), and the competition screen. For these songs, Jackson probably contributed things like basic melodies and beats, singing over the phone because he was on tour and couldn’t be in the studio. Now time for some wild speculation about what I think he actually did! Knuckles’ theme in particular strikes me as something he would have been responsible for, with the beat even being remarkably similar to his later song Blood on the Dance Floor. I could go either way on the additions made in the miniboss theme though. The song makes frequent use of samples which isn’t something MJ did often in his music, but the way they’re used as little vocal annunciations sprinkled throughout does sound like his style. Another iffy one is Carnival Night Zone. While it does share many similarities to his song Jam (even containing a note-for-note quote of the song and an audio sample) it’s otherwise a retread of the standard circus music, March of the Gladiators. Sorry for rambling for so long, I’m just very passionate about this subject :)
This credits theme is an overachievement as a mid game credits song and makes S&K feel like a massive underachievement because it didn't include sonic 3 music in the mix.
I just discovered this channel and I gotta say you got REALLY close to perfect clarity with the music but I notice some dithering in the notes. When I hooked up my oscilloscope I figured out how to filter the sound dithering by reverse engineering the .VGM sound file and comparing the expected octave frequency with a single byte sent to the pinouts "as voltages" "not the best way to explain that but its the best way I can" This requires allot of calibration which is a PAIN in the arse!! I commend you for getting so far doing something I have been trying to do for years. Is this playback on the original hardware?
