I have a Merc Thunderbolt 50HP 2 stroke 4 cylinder that looks just like this that I rebuilt and got running, but it idles very high in neutral!. Anyone know what I need to adjust to get it to idle like this one does in neutral?. Mine looks just like this one. I was thinking it could maybe be the cable that comes from the mercontrol/throttle and choke, and maybe I need to adjust one of the stop screws on the side?, and I know one does timing so I just need to know which one to adjust so I don't accidentally end up screwing up the timing!?. Any advice would be very much appreciated!. I want to go on the water, but I can't because I know if I put it in gear with it idling that high that it'll be bad news bear! lol

I had problems with this engine like high idle poor performance high fuel consumption but after timing trigger adjustment all was solved. When you give more throttle it adjusts sooner ignition thats where balance plays big role.

@@aldixb1 Still not sure how that translates to which screws/parts I need to adjust. I get the concept, but just need to see someone show me HOW to do it. I can't find one video anywhere on youtube where someone SHOWS YOU how to adjust those settings on this particular engine.

@@adamalander7515 original flywheel have marks on it with timing degrees on it, if you have timing torch you can check, if i remember correct it was just about tdc at idle.

@@aldixb1 Oh yeah, no I do not have a timing torch/light. I think it's actually just the screw that adjusts the idle that the throttle and starting cables that run from the Mercontrol unit that need adjusting because I did not touch any of the adjustments or settings on the motor inside when I got it. I just replaced the starter, the stator and the power pack and pulled the carb and did a rebuild with new gaskets etc. I never touched anything to do with the motor or timing, so I'm thinking that maybethe cables have stretched or changed length when I took them out to work on it, and just adjusting the throttle cable or the cold start cable might do it as it fired right up and runs great it's just idling a bit fast, but it's not running rough or anything like that, so I'll try that first before opening the can of worms of messing with the timing and getting a timing light etc. I've seen guys mention the screws on the side that are stoppers for the idle, but there is 3 different screws on the side and one of the screws is for idle timing, but I'm just not sure which one of the 3 it is and was hoping I could find a video of someone doing a run through. I am a visual learner, but there's just no videos of people showing you how to do it on youtube that I could find yet, and that's what I need. I guess my search continues....
