It is definitely problematic on many levels. I think solid evidence exists for some sociological factors which have led to where certain people are today in the hierarchy of our world. It is much more complicated than what is being presented here though and the judgements hurled are a turn off to whatever truths they may express.

According to the Roland Freyer study out of Harvard, police do not kill unarmed black people statistically more than they do white people. This is a multivariate study backed up by other independent studies looking at police departments all of the nation (researcher is black btw and expected a different outcome so no confirmation bias!). Yet, if I were to say this and challenge the current narrative that black people are being systematically targeted and killed by racist cops, then I would be attacked by a mob.

Much of the tactics they utilize have a chilling effect on dialogue. Cancel culture seems to be a direct result of this ideology. In the universities many professors are quite aware of the consequences of criticizing this stuff. There is a guy called Benjamin Boyce who has a channel that documents how these ideas played out at Evergreen State College that is pretty interesting/disturbing. A professor was accused of being a racist, and a white supremacist, when he refused to comply to a request to all white people in the school to voluntarily absent themselves, on the grounds that the request was discriminatory. He was the only dissenting voice not because he was the only professor who disagreed but because he was the only one with the courage to face the mob.

Yes, he did say this. His point is: discriminate to produce equal outcomes (equity) and not equal opportunity (equality). This means providing more funding to traditionally underfunded schools, for instance. Schools are funded _totally_ unequally. Right now they are not remotely equal. It's pure evil. But people oppose equal school funding. He would go a step further after equal school funding and provide more funding to those areas who have more people who are part of groups that have had schools historically underfunded. Is this right? Well, I'm not sure. But it does make you think, and I like that. It demonstrates that right now, what we have is incredibly backwards and evil. We need to actually start getting pissed off about it. One reason Kendi is so popular is _because_ he says stuff like this, which actually gets people talking. We've become immune to these effects and just accept them as normal. They're not normal, they're not OK. We're not even giving equal opportunities, much less equal outcomes. It turns out that the seat did not fit a single pilot, why? Because people are not averages and come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. Recognizing that is the first step to recognizing that chasing averages for people is just a dump idea, rather focus on increasing peoples productivity, simple help them become the best version of themselves that they can be, while recognizing that "best" is subjective. And if you think about it, this is a rather healthy lessons we teach our children, saying to them "don't measure yourself against your classmate, don't worry about his achievement, but worry about your own, focus on your own improvement etc", so why would it be different in adulthood?

Having worked in academia I know how rigorous the writing and research process is. Kendi's most famous book "How to be an anti-racist", while not an academic, peer-reviewed book, is based on his second book "Stamped From the Beginning". This book was heavily peered reviewed. He published several articles before completing the book, all of which went through the peer review process. The book was then submitted to the editorial process, which is much more intense for academic books than it is for say a book of fiction. And he presented his findings and research at multiple research conferences where he receives feedback from his peers. Also, the idea that Kendi doesn't engage in public debates because he is afraid to is nonsense. If anything, he doesn't do it because there really isn't any incentive to. College professors get paid to do two things: teach classes and write research papers/books. Their tenure is based on those two activities. What purpose does going on some podcast with a non-academic to be yelled at and condescended to serve? There's really no up side.

The problem is, usually in these situations, people are talking about two different definitions of racism with each other. Where one side is talking about systemic racism, which is a complex system based on centuries of inequality that influeces everybody on a subconscious level, the other side just hears "you are a person who intentionally insults and wants to hurt people who are not your skin color". And this is simply not the same thing. Admitting you have grown up in a society with systemic racism at its backbone is the first step to healing long-ingrained injustice and inequality, it doesn't mean you are part of the KKK.
I think you're missing the point, Jose. The point isn't defining you as a racist. The point is defining our society as fraught with racist systems--not the sort of systems a single racist person perpetuates, but that we all allow to exist via apathy. Listen to him carefully, and you'll recognize that he calls out every group in America, including minorities that bear the brunt of racist systems, for engaging in racist thinking. Who cares who is or isn't a racist? What matters is that everyone should be treated equally, and our society clearly doesn't do that at large. Think of it this way. A building is smouldering. A businessman stands outside a building, and there's smoke coming out of one of the windows. A resident comes up to him and says, "This could turn into a bad fire--come up to that room with me and let's try to put it out." The businessman says, "I didn't start that fire, and I sure as heck aren't responsible for it. Is this my neighborhood? Let a firemen come and put it out." We cannot blame the man for being an arsonist. But would we admire this man? No--as the building burns down, we'd condemn him for being a bystander. The same thing goes with racism in America. We may not be "racists," by the KKK definition of the term. But by not taking action, we have failed to oppose the racism. And so racism lingers. Kendi asks us to stop letting racism be someone else's problem. That's the only way our children's children won't have to grapple with the same iniquity.

He provides a definition of racist as an adjective which I'm ok with ... 'racist is a descriptive term. It defines what a person is saying or doing at any given moment expressing racist ideas like black people are lazy.' That's fine. But I don't agree that you can then call up that person as a racist - using the noun as a sledgehammer. But that's what is happening. These aggressive, ambitious, thrusting people claiming the black community as their constituency lash out anyone not paying lip service to them, 'You are a racist.' Racist the adjective is just like saying someone's rude or ill-mannered or ignorant, all far preferable terms. What we need to do is get the word racist, and all the professional charlatans who ply it, out of the whole discussion. Then the people left in the discussion can have a sensible conversation.

As a minority myself, I've grown up in a community with little racism. I received more flack and teasing for growing up Mormon than for growing up Asian. So my experiential context and Dr. Kendi's are very different. I see race as "a" problem instead of "the" problem, if that makes sense. So, naturally, I disagree with him on various topics and issues and agree with him on others. I like his idea that a person's action or speech in a given moment can be racist without classifying the whole person as racist. I also agree that if a person makes a mistake, they should admit it, change, and become a better person. On the other hand, at least in this presentation, his arguments about economics and politics seem to overly simplify complex issues. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Dr. Kendi, and hopefully we can all continue to learn from each other from different sides of issues and find common ground.

Mmmmmmmmmm people are reacting to a lot of things Mr Kendi did not even say. He is not saying that all non-blacks are racist. Nor is he pushing a far-left anti-White agenda. Jeez. The point is we all need to do the hard work of confronting our own biases. And more specifically how policies create or help to maintain inequity.
Well, one of the problematic things he said was that a white person needs to acknowledge that their success may be due in part to the advantages of systemic racism and failing to acknowledge that makes you racist. The reason that is problematic is because there is no accurate way to even begin to determine which privileges contribute to a person's success. Yes, there is white privilege, but there is also the privilege of gender, nationality, religion, beauty, IQ, personality traits. There are so many factors involved in a person's success. But he is so passionately sure that it is white privilege specifically that makes a person successful. From a scientific perspective, it's just a crazy claim.

The belief that (systemic) racism accounts for differences in human character or ability and that members of some races need assistance in order to have an even chance at equity. Non-Racism - (No formal definition exists, but it logically follows that this would be the contradiction to the affirmative) n. The belief that race does not account for differences in human character or ability and that no particular race is superior to any other. Racists, you can keep your first two terms. I'll stick with judging you based on the content of your character.

It takes someone with mindfulness and compassion to stand up to an injustice that did not happen to you. Anti-racism is looking at a situation and noticing if you got preferential treatment and then speaking out for the person who was unfairly treated. It is about going about your life noticing and thinking about what others are going through and if something happens, even a small thing that could make someone’s day better you do it. Observe, think and then act based on fairness.

I grew up thinking that racism was discriminating against another person because of their race, skin color, or even culture and ethnicity but I guess not anymore. I guess the true definition of racism is the act of not believing that everyone is racist and more specifically the act of disagreeing with the Kendi.
I don’t think we should allow people to redefine language at their will. People are trying to redefine the term “racism” so that it can be applied in a sweeping way across entire groups of people without regard to the actions of individuals in that group. This is incredibly divisive. This might help move some people to action but it is not going to help us build a better society together.

So since he can't even come up with a coherent definition of what racism is he's objectively unqualified to speak on the subject. I’ve seen him say in multiple talks that “there’s either something wrong with people OR there’s something wrong with power and policies” and I just feel like that is such a simplistic and juvenile outlook. Completely lacks nuance.
The point is that if you look at America, there are very clear racial disparities across almost every measurable axis. If you start with the assumption that there really isn't a difference across racial groups, that humans are essentially equal, then this will lead you towards the truth that certain policies in the USA have impacted different racial groups disproportionately. It is a simple fact of history that white people in the USA , in general, have long had access to more resources and sources of wealth generation that have non-white people as a direct result of power, law, and policy. When those laws and policies changed and slowly became more equal (extremely recently historically speaking, after over 100 years of blatantly racist policy) all that accumulated wealth and power did not just suddenly vanish. Furthermore, policies such as red-lining and disproportionate law-enforcement (particularly when it comes to drug offenses) have fed into that cycle of disparity. Is this enough nuance for you? Humans have individual agency, and we are also highly influenced by our environment and our access to resources. When policies and laws have limited certain groups access to resources and limited options, we see the racial disparities arise.
It’s so hard to watch this, yet it’s incredibly important to understand those with which you completely disagree. Remember folks, there are ONLY two types of people. Racists and Anti-Racists. And if you really want to talk about the relationship between criminals and racism: what percentage of white criminals have been shot by the police and what is this percentage regarding POC? If police officers can do whatever they want to criminals, then what is the purpose of justice, of law?

He sees any disparity between white and black and immediately chalks that up to "systemic racism" eg one of his first stats about incarceration rates vs population, he ignores the higher criminality rate. He's got a doctorate, he should know this, so he's being completely disengenious with his arguments.

People, like you, would rather target him than his ideas, logic, or reason. The sarcasm and obvious vitriol in your reply epitomizes this. You cannot point to disparities between groups and claim racism, sexism, etc. Here's an example for you. According to the Roland Freyer study out of Harvard, police do not kill unarmed black people statistically more than they do white people. This is a multivariate study backed up by other independent studies looking at police departments all of the nation (researcher is black btw and expected a different outcome so no confirmation bias!). Yet, if I were to say this and challenge the current narrative that black people are being systematically targeted and killed by racist cops, then I would be attacked by a mob.
Coleman Hughes wrote counter arguments in his article “how to be an anti-intellectual”. But yeah, I agree. I’d love to see Kendi debate in real time because his arguments are riddled with logical fallacies.
Much of the tactics they utilize have a chilling effect on dialogue. Cancel culture seems to be a direct result of this ideology. In the universities many professors are quite aware of the consequences of criticizing this stuff. There is a guy called Benjamin Boyce who has a channel that documents how these ideas played out at Evergreen State College that is pretty interesting/disturbing. A professor was accused of being a racist, and a white supremacist, when he refused to comply to a request to all white people in the school to voluntarily absent themselves, on the grounds that the request was discriminatory. He was the only dissenting voice not because he was the only professor who disagreed but because he was the only one with the courage to face the mob.

Yes, he did say this. His point is: discriminate to produce equal outcomes (equity) and not equal opportunity (equality). This means providing more funding to traditionally underfunded schools, for instance. Schools are funded _totally_ unequally. Right now they are not remotely equal. It's pure evil. But people oppose equal school funding. He would go a step further after equal school funding and provide more funding to those areas who have more people who are part of groups that have had schools historically underfunded. Is this right? Well, I'm not sure. But it does make you think, and I like that. It demonstrates that right now, what we have is incredibly backwards and evil. We need to actually start getting pissed off about it. One reason Kendi is so popular is _because_ he says stuff like this, which actually gets people talking. We've become immune to these effects and just accept them as normal. They're not normal, they're not OK. We're not even giving equal opportunities, much less equal outcomes. Let's start with equality, at least?

I give you a true story as an example, the air force once tried to save money by designing a pilot seat that could fit ever pilot (rather than having many different pilot seats for different pilot sizes), so they measured every pilot and came up with average measurements and designed a seat for such measurements. It turns out that the seat did not fit a single pilot, why?
Because people are not averages and come in all kinds of shapes and sizes.
Recognizing that is the first step to recognizing that chasing averages for people is just a dump idea, rather focus on increasing peoples productivity, simple help them become the best version of themselves that they can be, while recognizing that "best" is subjective.
And if you think about it, this is a rather healthy lessons we teach our children, saying to them "don't measure yourself against your classmate, don't worry about his achievement, but worry about your own, focus on your own improvement etc", so why would it be different in adulthood?

Having worked in academia I know how rigorous the writing and research process is. Kendi's most famous book "How to be an anti-racist", while not an academic, peer-reviewed book, is based on his second book "Stamped From the Beginning". This book was heavily peered reviewed. He published several articles before completing the book, all of which went through the peer review process. The book was then submitted to the editorial process, which is much more intense for academic books than it is for say a book of fiction. And he presented his findings and research at multiple research conferences where he receives feedback from his peers.
Also, the idea that Kendi doesn't engage in public debates because he is afraid to is nonsense. If anything, he doesn't do it because there really isn't any incentive to. College professors get paid to do two things: teach classes and write research papers/books. Their tenure is based on those two activities. What purpose does going on some podcast with a non-academic to be yelled at and condescended to serve? There's really no up side.

The problem is, usually in these situations, people are talking about two different definitions of racism with each other.
Where one side is talking about systemic racism, which is a complex system based on centuries of inequality that influeces everybody on a subconscious level, the other side just hears "you are a person who intentionally insults and wants to hurt people who are not your skin color".
And this is simply not the same thing.
Admitting you have grown up in a society with systemic racism at its backbone is the first step to healing long-ingrained injustice and inequality, it doesn't mean you are part of the KKK.

I think you're missing the point, Jose. The point isn't defining you as a racist. The point is defining our society as fraught with racist systems--not the sort of systems a single racist person perpetuates, but that we all allow to exist via apathy. Listen to him carefully, and you'll recognize that he calls out every group in America, including minorities that bear the brunt of racist systems, for engaging in racist thinking. Who cares who is or isn't a racist? What matters is that everyone should be treated equally, and our society clearly doesn't do that at large.
Think of it this way. A building is smouldering. A businessman stands outside a building, and there's smoke coming out of one of the windows. A resident comes up to him and says, "This could turn into a bad fire--come up to that room with me and let's try to put it out." The businessman says, "I didn't start that fire, and I sure as heck aren't responsible for it. Is this my neighborhood? Let a firemen come and put it out." We cannot blame the man for being an arsonist. But would we admire this man? No--as the building burns down, we'd condemn him for being a bystander.
The same thing goes with racism in America. We may not be "racists," by the KKK definition of the term. But by not taking action, we have failed to oppose the racism. And so racism lingers. Kendi asks us to stop letting racism be someone else's problem. That's the only way our children's children won't have to grapple with the same iniquity.

He provides a definition of racist as an adjective which I'm ok with ... 'racist is a descriptive term. It defines what a person is saying or doing at any given moment expressing racist ideas like black people are lazy.' That's fine. But I don't agree that you can then call up that person as a racist - using the noun as a sledgehammer. But that's what is happening. These aggressive, ambitious, thrusting people claiming the black community as their constituency lash out anyone not paying lip service to them, 'You are a racist.'
Racist the adjective is just like saying someone's rude or ill-mannered or ignorant, all far preferable terms. What we need to do is get the word racist, and all the professional charlatans who ply it, out of the whole discussion. Then the people left in the discussion can have a sensible conversation.

As a minority myself, I've grown up in a community with little racism. I received more flack and teasing for growing up Mormon than for growing up Asian. So my experiential context and Dr. Kendi's are very different. I see race as "a" problem instead of "the" problem, if that makes sense. So, naturally, I disagree with him on various topics and issues and agree with him on others. I like his idea that a person's action or speech in a given moment can be racist without classifying the whole person as racist. I also agree that if a person makes a mistake, they should admit it, change, and become a better person. On the other hand, at least in this presentation, his arguments about economics and politics seem to overly simplify complex issues. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Dr. Kendi, and hopefully we can all continue to learn from each other from different sides of issues and find common ground.

This is a fair point. But rape and murder are both active crimes. Racism is not even a _crime_. It's only passive. It's a behavior, not a crime. Don't think racism is criminal, or even necessarily evil. It's just not terribly useful. It's a mind-virus we're trying to work out, a product of a less-developed age. We'll get there; it's just going to take time and thought.
Mmmmmmmmmm people are reacting to a lot of things Mr Kendi did not even say. He is not saying that all non-blacks are racist. Nor is he pushing a far-left anti-White agenda. Jeez. The point is we all need to do the hard work of confronting our own biases. And more specifically how policies create or help to maintain inequity.
Well, one of the problematic things he said was that a white person needs to acknowledge that their success may be due in part to the advantages of systemic racism and failing to acknowledge that makes you racist. The reason that is problematic is because there is no accurate way to even begin to determine which privileges contribute to a person's success. Yes, there is white privilege, but there is also the privilege of gender, nationality, religion, beauty, IQ, personality traits. There are so many factors involved in a person's success. But he is so passionately sure that it is white privilege specifically that makes a person successful. From a scientific perspective, it's just a crazy claim.

Racism -

n. The belief that each race has distinct and intrinsic attributes.
Anti-Racism - (No formal definition exists, so in my own words, as best as I can neutrally describe it)
n. The belief that (systemic) racism accounts for differences in human character or ability and that members of some races need assistance in order to have an even chance at equity.
Non-Racism - (No formal definition exists, but it logically follows that this would be the contradiction to the affirmative)
n. The belief that race does not account for differences in human character or ability and that no particular race is superior to any other.
Racists, you can keep your first two terms. I'll stick with judging you based on the content of your character.

I grew up thinking that racism was discriminating against another person because of their race, skin color, or even culture and ethnicity but I guess not anymore. I guess the true definition of racism is the act of not believing that everyone is racist and more specifically the act of disagreeing with the Kendi.
I don’t think we should allow people to redefine language at their will. People are trying to redefine the term “racism” so that it can be applied in a sweeping way across entire groups of people without regard to the actions of individuals in that group. This is incredibly divisive. This might help move some people to action but it is not going to help us build a better society together.

I’ve seen him say in multiple talks that “there’s either something wrong with people OR there’s something wrong with power and policies” and I just feel like that is such a simplistic and juvenile outlook. Completely lacks nuance.
The point is that if you look at America, there are very clear racial disparities across almost every measurable axis. If you start with the assumption that there really isn't a difference across racial groups, that humans are essentially equal, then this will lead you towards the truth that certain policies in the USA have impacted different racial groups disproportionately. It is a simple fact of history that white people in the USA , in general, have long had access to more resources and sources of wealth generation that have non-white people as a direct result of power, law, and policy. When those laws and policies changed and slowly became more equal (extremely recently historically speaking, after over 100 years of blatantly racist policy) all that accumulated wealth and power did not just suddenly vanish. Furthermore, policies such as red-lining and disproportionate law-enforcement (particularly when it comes to drug offenses) have fed into that cycle of disparity. Is this enough nuance for you? Humans have individual agency, and we are also highly influenced by our environment and our access to resources. When policies and laws have limited certain groups access to resources and limited options, we see the racial disparities arise.

...it shows a COMPARATIVE of known discrimination based on skin color and it's effects vs a similar test in most other countries in the world, and over at least the last 30 years.
- Their sample size is at least in the 10's of thousands in a diverse area.
- The study is falsifiable.

He sees any disparity between white and black and immediately chalks that up to "systemic racism" eg one of his first stats about incarceration rates vs population, he ignores the higher criminality rate. He's got a doctorate, he should know this, so he's being completely disengenious with his arguments.

Rather, you look for systemic factors. Clearly, an order of magnitude wealth disparity, combined with financial barriers to higher education and the totality of the job market, and access to social and medical services, as well as very real racial biases in the policing and judicial systems are all relevant, to name a few. In this way, the anti-racist viewpoint sees systemic weaknesses that the "not racist" view misses. Incidentally, by exposing such weaknesses, this can act as a corrective, which can be beneficial not only for racial minorities, but also the vast majority of citizens.
