Salaries are negotiated, no team is obligated to pay these salaries. Some players definitely do not merit the high salaries they are earning. Two that immediately come to mind are Aaron Rodgers and Deshaun Watson. Conversley, there are others that are grossly underpaid. Players' careers average 3.3 years. Many players suffer serious injuries that require medical care long after their careers and health insurance expire. Doesn't sound that glamorous from that angle.
