Rachmaninov a écrit trois symphonies au cours de ses trois et dix ans d'existence - une au début de sa carrière, une autre au milieu et une troisième à la fin. Sa première symphonie date de 1895/96 et a été créée à Saint-Pétersbourg en 1897, une performance qui s'est avérée être une expérience traumatisante pour le compositeur alors âgé de vingt-quatre ans. Visiblement déconcerté par la conception inhabituelle de ce qui n'était qu'apparemment l'œuvre d'un débutant, le chef d'orchestre, Alexandre Glazounov, a montré ses limites et, ce faisant, a provoqué un fiasco.
Pendant trois ans, les capacités créatives de Rachmaninov sont altérées et, bien qu'il continue à se produire en tant que pianiste et chef d'orchestre, ce n'est qu'en 1900 qu'il ose à nouveau s'essayer à la composition. Sa deuxième symphonie (la plus célèbre) de 1906/07 date de cette période de confiance en soi renouvelée, tandis que sa troisième n'a été achevée qu'en 1936, sept ans avant sa mort. Alors que la Première Symphonie est une expression explosive de conflits individuels, la Troisième - créée par Stokowski à Philadelphie en 1936 - s'est révélée être une complainte plus générale sur la patrie russe du compositeur, qu'il avait quittée en 1917 et qu'il n'avait jamais oubliée.
La deuxième symphonie est très thématique, déployant de nombreux thèmes tantôt guerrier, tantôt mélancolique, tantôt héroïque, toujours lumineux et positifs. L'orchestration fait porter les thèmes par quasiment tous les instruments de l'orchestre ce qui génère des passages de solos admirables. L’Adagio est sans doute le mouvement le plus typiquement rachmaninovien de la symphonie. Il est empreint d’un grand lyrisme, la mélodie passe de la clarinette aux cordes. Les thèmes se répondent, s’enchevêtrent. C’est l’un des plus beau mouvement de tout le repertoire symphonique..

The First Symphony has many wonderful ideas, many beautiful melodies (as we naturally expect from Rachmaninoff), and was unduly maligned in my humble opinion. From what I've read, the reason it took so long to be appreciated was more with the sub-par initial performance led by Glazunov, than with the composition itself.
Rachmaninoff’s story as a composer is one of struggle and transcendence. It is almost incomprehensibly challenging to think about how he was such an amazing pianist and at the same time an immortal composer in search of his own voice and unique style.
Few have commented on this excellent set of recordings. Without a doubt Evgeny Svetlanov during his life, gave an inestimable verve and intimacy to his interpretation of the symphonic music of which Rachmaninov deep down, regardless of earning a living, must have considered his major opus. The cards are on the table. Choose. Many thanks to CMRR for your ability to share the best. Beyond that, the fidelity of the sound is remarkable. A treasure for all who love Rachmaninov.

Thank you for these. Personally, I have always found Rachmaninov's symphonies more interesting than his celebrated piano concertos. The range, originality and searing beauty of this music is miraculous.
I feel it too. Discovered his Symphonies through Ashkenazy. And besides, he did arrange one or two pieces by Bach (i also discoveres through Ashkenazy)
Rachmaninov is in my view, a cut above most other composers of the era. Simply brilliant!

'Rachmaninoff wrote three symphonies during his three and ten years of existence - one at the start of his career, another in the middle and a third at the end. His first symphony dates from 1895/96 and premiered in St. Petersburg in 1897, a performance that turned out to be a traumatic experience for the then twenty-four-year-old composer. Visibly baffled by the unusual conception of what was only apparently the work of a beginner, the conductor, Alexander Glazunov, showed his limits and in doing so caused a fiasco.
For three years Rachmaninoff's creative abilities were impaired, and although he continued to perform as a pianist and conductor, it was not until 1900 that he again dared to try his hand at composition. His second (most famous) symphony of 1906/07 dates from this period of renewed self-confidence, while his third was not completed until 1936, seven years before his death. While the First Symphony is an explosive expression of individual conflict, the Third - premiered by Stokowski in Philadelphia in 1936 - turned out to be a more general lament over the composer's Russian homeland, which he had left in 1917 and which he had never forgotten.
The second symphony is very thematic, deploying many themes, sometimes warlike, sometimes melancholy, sometimes heroic, always bright and positive. The orchestration brings the themes to bear on almost all the instruments of the orchestra, which generates admirable solo passages. The Adagio is arguably the most typical Rachmaninovian movement in the symphony. It is imbued with great lyricism, the melody ranges from clarinet to strings. The themes respond to each other, intertwine. This is one of the most beautiful movements in the entire symphonic repertoire.'
The only rock music I ever listen to is Rachmaninoff. These symphonies are some of his best output.
Much of the finale of Symphony Number 2 is played faster here than I can ever recall hearing it before in my 50+ years of loving this piece, and it comes across as most joyful under Svetlanov's baton. One tends to think of Rachmaninov's tunes as beautiful but, more often than not, a little sombre, with an emphasis on the minor keys. This movement, as played here, must be one of his happiest outpourings. A wonderful recording.

@@classicalmusicreference Malgré le respect que je dois à Ormandy qui fut un immense chef et ami du compositeur, la version Svetlanov a la mérite de sonner russe et tellement russe ! Le son de l'orchestre de Philaldelphie c'est tout autre chose. Je sais que Rachmaninoff le considérait à l'époque comme le meilleur orchestre américain devant celui de New York. Il n'empêche Svetlanov était tellement connaisseur de ce compositeur que sa pâte me paraît plus "authentique". Merci du post quoi qu'il en soit !

Having never heard the 1st symphony before I was immediately reminded of the 1997 movie, the perfect storm!. Much of what we have today is a result of what has come before.. This is a great trilogy... I appreciate rachmaninov more as a result.
Glazunov no debería haber dirigido está primera sinfonía del gran genio Rachmanivov si la hubiera estudiado previamente. Porque sin ser uno él y sin ser uno un músico notable, como diletante me parece bellísima.

Не музыка, а бескрайний простор, не музыка, а заповедные леса, не музыка, а чистое голубое небо, не музыка, наконец, а тяготы русской деревни, загадочный характер загадочной русской души. Не даром Уинстон Черчилль обмолвился однажды, что если бы от всей русской цивилизации осталась одна только песенно-музыкальная традиция, одного бы этого хватило, чтобы затмить достижения других цивилизаций.

glazunov seems partly right in his critiques (read the captions),went through half of the record & seemed to go in stuttering directions? Pianists are great specialists in their repertory but some lack a spark in greater orchestral works OPINIONWISE. Just read throught it and feel affirmed.
The orchestra "Vocalise" is amazing. But the vocal version (I think that is the original) is an absolute. E.g., ua-cam.com/video/iBVkYGLEUpg/v-deo.html
