Hi Kevin! I'm a wedding photographer in Philadelphia (PA) and I just wanted to say how much I love your photography! You've inspired me for years, and I always look through your work. I love how many emotional moments you capture, and so often your photos have layers (foreground/subject/background) - I love that. It really makes the viewer feel like they are there. I imagine your couples look back on these photos often, and you are likely a huge part of recording their family story. Bravo!
The AF issues are mainly prevalent in Video mode, Fuji has acknowledged there is a problem and is spending a lot of time and money fixing what they broke in the last two firmware update, the XH2, XH2S and GFX100Sii firmware has just been release and there is a marked improvement especially in AF-C, XT-5 and others to follow by the end of the year.
Kevin, this is great content. I do not photograph weddings (or anything professionally), but I found a lot here that helped me with how to anticipate and compose.
Brilliant photos and insights. Do you mind me asking what one of your presets you use for the colour photos? They are gorgeous and compliment your top shelf B&W images perfectly.
Thanks for your videos and sharing of your beautiful work. It is inspiring :) I am starting to use back button auto focus and wondering about the locking of the exposure. Are you locking the exposure by half pressing the shutter button? Or the AEL button on the back of the camera? Best regards from The Netherlands!
Hi Kevin, Great shots just wondered what exposures you had for the internal shots ISO/Fstop/speed and do you use noise reduction... as always great video and informative...
Kevin although you have cut back on wedding photography, you are such a gifted wedding photographer . Thank you for sharing your thoughts and how you capture the special moments!
I’ve only shot two weddings for friends but I aim for the same style, candid allows the couple to spend more time with friends and family rather than being directed by a photographer all day - lovely work, you should do profiles for capture one 👌
Kevin just commenting to say I love your photographic style, and courage since with many images it strikes me that you are able to get in close with the 18mm. I'd be happy to take more pictures of the sort you take at any event! You say you shoot "auto" throughout the day - but I am curious if you set a minimum shutter speed / maximum ISO. I am also curious if you stay on single shot or if you do any bursting on AF-C modes. I am sure you do - but many people would benefit from knowing some details of how you typically set up for certain moments/lighting challenges. FWIW I find AF-S to be highly competent for clicking away during events. But for more dynamic moments I might set case 2 or case 3, and use a single point box or the smallest zone box for tracking+bursts. The zone box can be an asset if I prioritize "center" and can keep my point on the intended target. For a year I shot with a minimum speed of about 1/125 (no IBIS), and got away with quite a bit. But as I gain experience I find myself trying to stay at 1/250 or higher, since my targets are nearly always in motion.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 excellent job as always Kevin!!! Thanks for sharing your work with us. How well do jepgs hold up while using your presets? Or would it be best to use them with raw files?
Hi Kevin, I absolutely love your work! You’re often used as a research resource in my education. I’ve got a question. As a photography student, we’re often being drilled to either shoot in colour or in black and white. Get taught mixing both often can lead to detachment when providing a gallery in whatever manner. What do you think of this and do you already have an idea in your head that you’re converting the image to colour or black and white while shooting or are you waiting until pre production?
You can do both, but do it in "islands". If you look at the photofilm each section (or island) is either colour, or black and white. e.g the ceremony is all black and white, the outside stuff is all colour. Don't mix colour and black and white in sections. It's what we call "islands of colour".
Nice work sir. I love BB focus and want to use it on my xt but my hands are so big its just not a good experience. Im just looking for an excuse to get an XH Fuji for Christmas maybe...
What is all this nonsense about Fujifilm auto focus? I've been using Fujifilm for something like eight years now and never had a single issue. As ever Kev, great pictures! The couple must be over the moon with them.
It's the folks who depend on C-AF (especially for video) who are complaining that the AF was degraded on some models after a Fuji software update. Fuji have just released new software to fix the issue on some models. And remember they are comparing to Sony and Canon which are the gold standard. For me, Fuji Single AF does the job just fine for photos. I do video also but for me CAF isn't really a requirement for my use case.
@@bingbong4848 I have used Fujifilm cameras for weddings from the X-T2 through to the X-T5 for both Stills and Video and never had any issues acquiring focus, maybe I've just been lucky?
You can‘t simply talk away anything. Kevin probably most of the time uses single autofocus. That works fine even on my old X-Pro 2‘s with which I still shot weddings. Having said that the autofocus tracking and stickyness is far better on Nikon Z‘s I recently tested. It all depends on what you need to execute. Also in the past years I used the autofocus in low light was some times a real pain. But that got better.
continuous auto focus has been broken for years on thr newest generation of fuji cameras. just look it up on youtube. you'll find the 100s of videos that show the issues. single point af is fine
I don’t know why people are having such problems with AF. Maybe it’s because I used to shoot with much older tech , I don’t know. But I have to say I don’t have a problem with AF on my XT5. Works fine for me for photography.
Then really, I must have very special cameras as I've used AF-C for fast moving sports, parts of weddings, family shoots etc. No dramas at all. I just think people don't spend enough time learning the settings and configuration options to be totally honest.
Love how you capture these precious moments! I know people complain about Fuji continuous autofocus but I use Fuji too for weddings and events and you gotta know the limitations of the camera and work with it like I do and I’ve had no problems and the secret is press the shutter button half way down on your subject twice before you take the shot to make sure the camera locks the focus
Yea, I see. Though I really don't think me personally having a Nikon, Canon, Sony or whatever would make me get better photos. I think people have become reliant on super fast continuous focus and are obsessed with it. It fits for some genres, of course - sports, wildlife etc. But for weddings, where is the fun or art in having a camera that just follows the eyes of people and takes 30 fps. The skill of the photographer there is basically in their culling speed.
Great pictures as always and it is trully inspiring😍🙏🏻😊.. I have been a fan of yours for quite sometime now! Greetings from rainy Jakarta!
Thank you so much 😀

Lovely video thank you! How do you handle focus? Eg: do you do face detect AF or single point/centre point AF focus and recompose?
Hi Kevin, Great shots just wondered what exposures you had for the internal shots ISO/Fstop/speed and do you use noise reduction... as always great video and informative...
I also use an xt5 for my portrait and event work I and I personally hardly ever see autofocus issues even in low light

Very insightful, amazing pictures! Thanks for sharing! 😎✌️

A little cheers for the insight!
That's so kind. Thank you
Great photos, Kevin. How do you decide between B&W vs. color? I love that you use both.
I use "islands of colour". Each section of the day is either colour or monochrome. e.g Bridal Prep and ceremony all mono, outside, all colour.
Superb! 👏👏👏🙏
🙌

Will work fine with JPEGs - though you will get more out of them with RAW files.
@@kevin_mullins thank you😀🙏🏽🙏🏽
Beautiful images Kevin, Any on camera flash for these or just natural light?
No Flash. For the dancing at the end, I used the Manfrotto Lumimuse.

You can change the location of the AF Lock button to another one via Function Buttons 👍
So you don’t use eye detect or face detect?
Lovely images. Especially when you think this is "just" an APSC camera. The images in the photofilm flashed by a bit too quick for me.

If it's single point focus then fine, anything else and Fujifilm has never been able to do it
