@@krokodeilakiasGR 😂 How?! Care to explain yourself? People these days will sell their freedom and young years for a time they can never get back. It's not all about the wage...
@MultiArtist1234 There are companies that give far more vacations than Google does. And also, though my peers are also guilty of this, if you work at these tech firms, you pretty much live and breathe there. Work isn't until 5. Well it is and yet it isn't (WLB is great for the most part as your work generally ends by five BUT people generally stay in the campus a bit longer for food, social gatherings, group events, etc). Your life at Google pretty much blends until dinner time (sometimes even past dinner as there are quite a few that stay for the food). Your life basically ends up rotating around Google from morning to night. You got to remember, Mountain view is a boring place overall with nothing much to do and you will probably be living with 3 or 4 other people in an apartment room [you don't really have much of your "own" privacy. Home is basically a small room with a bed and all you really look forward to is your bank/brokerage accounts having lots of $ that you don't ever really need]. Not saying that's a bad thing but in some ways, by working at these tech firms in the East Bay, you are kind of selling yourself to the company. While I am also living part of this lifestyle, I do wonder if looking back, I would wish I did something else in my early twenties outside work. From the food to my social gathering to my enjoyment to my work all at 1 location from 1 company. In some ways, how saddening is that? You basically live in a small bubble and never really leave that bubble outside once a year vacation. There's a reason why burn outs at Silicon Valley happens so frequently and lots of software engineers video themselves 'vacationing' for a month or two. And there's also a good reason why many of us keep emphasising the concept of retiring early. Oh, and just for you all to know, the average Googler stays at Google for 3 years. It's great for the first year but what does Google really offer that other firms can't offer? Free food? Food is like a few thousand dollars a year at most and many firms like Facebook, Airbnb, Dropbox, Uber, etc. also give free food. Game rooms? Have you seen how empty those game rooms are in this video despite the tens of thousands of workers? The game room at my company is unused. Resting pods/areas? Your promotion depends on the amount of output you can bring to the company. Do you want to get fired or not? The resting areas at my firm while almost always occupied is almost rarely used by the large majority of workers. Really ask yourself, why do I want to work for . If your answer is like "free food", "gaming room", etc., then you aren't focusing on the right stuffs. At end of day, most of your time will be spent of you doing your job, not having fun in the gaming room. And food expenses are quite low in general (plus, I would rather get paid more than have 'free food'). 'Free food' comes at the expense of your 1~1.5 hour lunch becoming 5~15 minutes. Most Nooglers/Googlers don''t work on 'cool stuff'. There will be the research team and the 'rest' (including me) are just code monkeys fixing small bugs or implementing features here and there. I'm not saying Google is not a great place to work. I'm saying that your dream to work at a company should not depend on trivial stuffs like 'free food', 'game rooms', etc.
Is this a place to work or chill out?? how do u manage to take time out and do these activities ?lol I am a Computer Engineer too working in New York but i am so fucking busy all day at work.

It's part of your total pay. Theoretically, your pay will be higher without the 'free lunch' but then it won't be great for advertising the company. Plus, so many kids "dream" of working at places if they see 'free food' or 'free gaming rooms' without recognising 'free food' --> more hours sitting down to finish tasks and 'free gaming rooms' --> again, stay longer at the company so you do more work. Also, see how empty the gaming room are considering tens of thousands of workers work there. It means more or less that almost no one uses those gaming rooms and is mostly for PR purposes (advertising the company, etc.).
