    This video, and several of your other reviews, are revealing something interesting about a lot of widely accepted opinions on a lot of these 8-bit games.
    I think the rental and second-hand market at the time prevented a lot of people from playing these titles the way they were intended: With the manual, and patience.
    Games at the time had VERY limited space, and a lot of things that would be a standard part of a game, like maps and item descriptions, had to be handed off to the manual by necessity.
    I'd say for many 8-bit titles, playing without the intended documentation is almost equivalent to trying to play a game in a foreign language

    • @hungrygoriya
      @hungrygoriya  4 роки тому +8

      Yes! I agree completely with you here! It's amazing how often I watch a review or watch someone playing a game live and can tell right away that there hasn't been much manual reading in advance. I think people are starting to give these "bad games" a real chance nowadays, but it's taken a long time to get here. I hope more people will give Bill and Ted a chance. There are passwords too!

      I agree

    • @robintst
      @robintst 4 роки тому +3

      That's an incredibly valid point now in hindsight. This game did nothing but frustrate me as a kid and it was always a rental with no manual that had to be returned in a couple days. By that same token, and this is just general observation of many other games from the time, sometimes a developer could be overly ambitious in the scope of their game and create something far too obtuse/cryptic in concept or too technically complex for the limitations of the hardware they made it for.
      Most people put Bill & Ted in that category but I think Goriya's insight, for having grown up with the game and giving it a chance, puts it into a more fair perspective. You really are given all the tools you need to complete the game, you just have to put some real thought into it to figure it all out. For it's heavy adventure genre leanings, really this game would have been more at home on MS-DOS.

    Fun fact: It seems that all games released based on the Bill and Ted-franchise are named after the first film, while being more based on the second. The NES game seems to be some sort of side story, even though the idea of time rebels is lifted from Bogus Journey. I guess the Excellent Adventure title was just more known to the bigger masses back then.

    Some collectors cringe about notes scribbled in manuals and stickers on cartridges. I absolutely LOVE that stuff, though. It's so unique and such a sweet part of that particular game's story. I love it so much. Loading up saves and codes of the past owner and reliving their stuff. It's great.

      I think I'm touch and go on it... I don't really like a lot of things spoiled for me before I have a chance to play a game... I find it like reading notes in a book or something. But I do appreciate the memories attached to those kinds of things for the previous owners. It's good to see games that were loved by their previous owners.

    • @hungrygoriya
      @hungrygoriya  4 роки тому

      Yeah, for the most part a lot of it is there in the manual, but it's like trying to explain something over the phone sometimes: it's hard to explain unless you can show someone what you mean, and the manual doesn't do a great job of that either, you know?
      And you're welcome. It was nice to come back to this game again.

  • @TechnicolorDojo

    hehe, It's a chess game with Death not, Satan, and it was battleship...and that was in the sequel... but you got the gist of it.
    This game frustrated me to no end as a child. I had no idea what was going on and would wander around throwing pudding at people until I got bored, which would take a while because the settings were interesting. I had teenage brothers, so there was no question why we had this game, but they were certainly not as supportive as your mother was with all those notes. I understand that notion of wanting pristine copies, but when I come across a manual as well loved as that one, it always brings a smile to my face. Thanks for the excellent trip down memory lane.

    • @hungrygoriya
      @hungrygoriya  4 роки тому

      Haha you know what? I realized that it was Death after I recorded, but decided to keep my fuzzy memories intact... it seemed fitting :) There was Satan in one of the movies though, right? Right?
      And yeah, it really depends on the type of love the manuals got. I've seen some in really terrible shape where things have been defaced, but old notes or passwords don't bother me too much unless they're wrong! That's happened to me a few times. Never trust a used manual map!

    This game was nothing but trouble for me when I was a kid. I ended up buying this game and wish that I would have stuck with my copy of Iron Tank for the NES from SNK which I took back to Blockbuster Video and is how I ended up with this game. I watched another person play through this game on his channel to see the rest of it because I never did get very far and always got frustrated with trying to find the historical bait for the historical figures and gave up and played something else.
    While I appreciate what the developers were trying to do with this game, the idea of the historical bait for the historical figures could have been implemented better. After watching a former UA-camr's playthrough of this game to see the rest of the game, I have no intention of ever going back to this game or playing it again on my Everdrive or owning a physical copy of it.

      I've played a bit of Haunting Starring Polterguy... it's a tough game though! I don't think I made it past the third stage.

      @MikeDolanFliss 3 роки тому

      @@hungrygoriya It IS tough! I remember enjoying the aesthetic and premise, then realizing a few stages in I need to take it much more seriously (and in a less fun way?) to make it through to completion - which I've never done.
      Reminds me a bit like Toe Jam and Earl, a huge favorite of mine - lots of fun, but if you're not careful while you're having fun it's much more difficult to make it through the marathon than it seems. Quietly hard, in a way. Best wishes.

      The music for the cassettes I played when I talked about them, but I wasn't able to find isolated sound effects to download at the time. In hindsight I suppose I could've recorded them myself. I haven't had any trouble with demonetization for things like that, but I just didn't think of it.

    What is your opinion on AVGN's review of Bill and Ted's NES game?

    • @hungrygoriya
      @hungrygoriya  4 роки тому

      I think there are some fair points (it's one of my favourite episodes because of how much I like this game), but with a bit of patience I think this game is just fine and not quite as bad as it's made out to be. I can say the same for a lot of games that people feel are bad or don't like.

      @@hungrygoriya I recently played it through and it is English friendly, although I would recommend this guide (strategywiki.org/wiki/Getsu_Fuuma_Den) to help with learning what items do, story, etc. Also, there is a section you need to ask a townsperson the same question over and over to get what you need, which I would not have known without the guide. What's nice about it is that if you find where the baits are in each world, they're the same when the world repeats later with more difficult enemies. I really enjoyed that aspect! It just takes a little sleuthing at first, and then practicing some good execution later on.
