Smelly is the reason NOFX always sounds good. Mike can forget lyrics and the guys can screw up once in a while but Smelly is consistently on point every show for 40 years. Even when he in the midst of addiction. An amazing dude.
I think thats spot on. You can have the guitar and bass and vocals all mistake-laden, and it call all still work but if the drums aren't consistent it falls apart. What do you call 4 guys that hang around a drummer? A band.
Brought a tear to my eye when he said he just wanted to be remembered as a nice guy that showed integrity. Dude probably inspired thousand of kids to pick up the sticks and start bashing, and all he wants is to be remembered as a nice guy. Fuck yeah!
For Smelly to admit he was delivering groceries says all you need to know about him. What an outstanding human being. Oh, and also the greatest punk drummer of ALL TIME. NOFX is the soundtrack for the past 25 years of my life.
This man is a sage. I heard the audiobook of hepatitis bathtub and his story just blew me away. When I was so down I nearly killed myself, this man's words occasionally entered my mind and helped me. Wise without ego.
Hung out with Smelly a few times outside of the music thing at his house and he is 100% just a straight up normal guy. Super cool dude, just one of the guys. We also went out and ate some Baja Fresh. Pretty rad.
So long, and thanks for all the shoes, Smelly. Thanks for doing it for The Cause for all these years! You've been one of my favorite drummers since I first heard Punk in Drublic almost 30 years ago
Nofx came into the restaurant i work at, these men treated me with nothing but respect and proceeded to give me vip tickets. They are so wholesome and nice. At the show, i had THEIR FOOD and drinks, stood on the stage and felt like family. They are the best!!!
Been listening to NOFX since '06 when a friend gifted me "Wolves in Wolves' Clothing" for my 15th birthday. Smelly's parts in "The Hepatitis Bathtub" book were intense and easily the most entertaining as well. If you haven't read the book, give it a shot! I thought it was great.
People that just brush this off as oh he's just the drummer you should definitely listen. Erik story is crazy and great! Glad you're still alive and with us despite all you went through!
Smelly has been an inspiration of mine since the 90s. One of the first drummers that i listened to after i picked up sticks myself as a teen. His style is still present in mine to this day. He taught me alot just from obsessively listening to NOFX for so long.
This dude is as real as it gets. Of course, he’s an exceptional punk drummer of a band that I consider to be a pillar of the genre, however what I admire most is his growth as a human being. The statistics for surviving heroin addiction on a level like he did has an extremely low success rate, and I’m in awe at his strength and perseverance. All of this can be read in the Hepatitis Bathtub, and it was such a life changing piece for me to read.
Amazing drummer and yes, he seems like the most grounded guy in the band, probably because of what he went though. You can see he's a chill dude who enjoys playing live and traveling the world and is over all the bullshit and partying that goes with touring.
Cheers for that Erik. What a first class man you are with all that you’ve done from go to woe with Caustic Cause NoFx chipping in with the grocery deliveries staying present with your family Entertaining us with your music and getting people in the ocean with your boards. Definitely someone to look up to and to realise that nothing is unattainable Thanks mate from 🇦🇺
Gotta respect anyone that can sit behind Fat Mike watching his drug induced antics for multiple decades while staying sober. Or maybe witnessing such foolery is what helped him maintain his posture.
Also, I was there at the last Warped Tour in 2019 when he hit Fat Mike in the side of the head with a drumstick when Fat Mike kept yapping between songs after making us all wait over an hour for NOFX to finally show up.
Smelly really is the fucking MAN. He’s such a massive part of NOFX, if they ever lost him, they’d be one of those bands that could never go on. They’re all incredibly talented, far more than they say they are, and they’d absolutely crumble if he or any of them left before they retired. I’m really gonna fucking miss them so much
The heroine diaries that Nikki Six wrote was actually damn good, he peeled it back pretty hard, Nothing like Hepatitis Bathtub tho, what an awesome story! Great interview, thank you! :)

Lol Heavy Petting Zoo is my favorite of their albums. That stretch from Ribbed to 45 or 46, I just wore out their albums, but that one and So Long had so many uniquely structured songs hidden behind the minimalist punk aesthetic of their sound. It was defiance against stagnation and complacency to me, bold music that too many bands would be too afraid to make, especially at that time. Really good interview
A little over 30 years ago i heard nofx. First kinda punk stuff i heard - was into stuff like pixies and sh1t but never turned back... dont lusten to em hardly ever now but would never have found half the bands i like ( pre internet) and here we are... old and covered in tatts reminiscing about the good ol days
This is why I’ve loved NOFX since I first heard them, the DIY ethic is ingrained, and yes they were lucky, right time, right place, but they are the only band I can think of who still to this day, just stay grounded. Lots of bands put that vibe out and sure enough when they gain a little popularity or sign with a label, they become fucking stereotypical rock stars with the attitude. Can tell all of NOFX are just cool guys, have managed to evolve and stay relevant over 40 years, to me that’s punk as fuck, no other band compares in that regard.
Damn Smelly… says Unwritten Law can’t draw 14 people. I just went to a sold out show of their’s a month ago where they were headlining and it was like 400 people. And the show ruled!
Smelly is such a cool drummer and one of my favoritt. Consistant drømmer tjat has a hard life in the pasta and really maid it to the other side. and grounded as fuck as a good humanbeeing👌 Cheers fra Norway😊
So funny to not want to talk about Heavy Petting Zoo. That was my intro to NOFX and is still my favorite album of theirs. I realize its the album thats kind of sounds the least like the others, but for him to say the songs suck is hilarious to me.
Humble man. Green Day and Offsprings opened the door for them? No way. I've been a NoFx fan since the moment I heard the Liberal Animation album. S & M..., Ribbed, Punk In Drublic....masterpieces. I hadn't even heard of Green Day then. And all this was when my country was a communist country in Europe.
It blows this guy's mind that someone would play music for the fun of it. The difference in mindset is one of the things that rubs me the wrong way about the younger generations.
It's easy to say you do it for "fun" when that fun also makes you lots of money. Let's see him go back to playing in a no-name band at bars for $50 and see how "fun" he still thinks it is. A lot of artists have tried side projects and went back to their main bands because going back to playing bars and being unknown isn't nearly as fun as what they are used to. Lots of respect for Smelly though.
I hate to say this but Mike God love him. I think he struggles with drugs because of his childhood and he is very smart. Intellectual people have a hard time living in this world. It's not simple to them.
His dad loaned him the money to start Fat Wreck Chords and Fat Mike thanked him by abandoning his father on his death bed and then wrote a song glorifying the act. Fuck Fat Mike.
Smelly is the reason NOFX always sounds good. Mike can forget lyrics and the guys can screw up once in a while but Smelly is consistently on point every show for 40 years. Even when he in the midst of addiction. An amazing dude.

Don’t forget El Hefe.
@@SonikJesus That's true. Hefe doesn't really mess up either. And he's got the vocals, trumpets, and solos to deal with.
@@trainspotter360 He’s actually really insanely talented. I think he graduated from a music college. His name translates to “the boss.”

Smelly is such a great guy and has always been very nice to me for years. He personally took my son to a meeting once.

Smelly can’t possibly know how much of an inspiration he has been to my generation as we grow up and see him holding strong in his sobriety
Smelly is my fav drummer of all time.
One of the greats!
Smelly always has great stories to tell, great interview!
Thank you sooooo much! He is a freaking legend.
Junkies often find themselves in messed up situations which make for interesting stories.
The Decline at Red Rocks is so amazing, and gets me in the feels every time
How the hell did this guy NOT know about Live at Red Rocks?!?!?!??
Hung out with Smelly a few times outside of the music thing at his house and he is 100% just a straight up normal guy. Super cool dude, just one of the guys. We also went out and ate some Baja Fresh. Pretty rad.
Smelly is my favourite. Such a great drummer and the best human. I’m also in recovery and what an inspiration.
Him being remembered as a good guy with integrity is guaranteed. And more.
So long, and thanks for all the shoes, Smelly. Thanks for doing it for The Cause for all these years! You've been one of my favorite drummers since I first heard Punk in Drublic almost 30 years ago
What a great interview! Thanks Smelly for all the years
Smelly has absolutely inspired me in staying sober and taking it more seriously (it took me half a dozen tries to finally “get it”)
Nofx came into the restaurant i work at, these men treated me with nothing but respect and proceeded to give me vip tickets. They are so wholesome and nice. At the show, i had THEIR FOOD and drinks, stood on the stage and felt like family. They are the best!!!
Heavy Petting Zoo is an odd one in the discography, but still in my top 5 NOFX records
True....
Same. Better than anything after War on Errorism. Also imagine interviewing Smelly and not knowing So Long comes after HPZ.

You hit the nail on the head. What he is has gone through and to come out the other side is AMAZING...
Smelly's parts were the best in the book. It really opened my eyes to how terrible drug addiction can be.
