How To Wire AC Unit - Easy Diagram

  • How to wire an HVAC AC unit. If you were to gut an air conditioner and disconnect all the wires, you could use this video as a template to wire it all back up. This is a video for a straight air conditioner though, not a heat pump. Heat pump wiring would be slightly different. I have used a diagram similar to the one I have drawn a few times before. Once in a while I will come to a 1976 air conditioner that has 4 capacitors, weird un-needed relays, a leaking start capacitor, and an old school contactor that looks nothing like the modern ones. To make things more exciting, anything I touch... Falls apart. The connectors are brittle, everything is rusted and corroded, and the customer is willing to pay for the repair instead of replacing the unit. Okay, no problem :) In those cases I would "gut" the unit. Take all that stuff out of there (besides the fan motor and compressor) and start fresh. I only put in a dual capacitor, 2 pole contactor, and a hard start kit. Then I wire it up the same way I show in the video and the old dinosaur works like a champ! :)

    I saw this video, when you just put out there, and I must tell you, that I thank you so much, for this info. God bless you, (my youth). I NOW HAVE A HEAT PUMP SYSTEM, and live in Poinciana, FLORIDA. I can say with confidence, it is because of this video, that I am able to make a living, and help my neighbors. I have learnt thru the yrs., how to completely diagnosed, trouble shoot, and electrically fixed or repair, any heat pump system; And I do it as a COURTESY for my neighbors, who can not afford to pay. You are really one of the best out there on you tube still, thnx again.

      I really appreciate you, God bless, and take care. You know there is one question that i would really like you, or any other out there to answer, if possible, and it is this.
      Can you explain fully about THE "C" terminal, ("THE COMMON"), on the control voltage, to the outdoor unit and the t'stat? Why is it that : when trouble shooting, one has to read between the "c" and the other designated terminals, and NOT FROM the "R", which supplies the power? i just can not get to understand it fully, yet, but it is what i know has to be done. I hope i am making sense. Thnx again.@@WordofAdviceTV

    I'm a semi-retired physician and home DIY'er. Ever since an HVAC contractor charged me over $700 to replace a $100 TACO circulator pump, I try to do my own repairs. So far I've done another TACO circulator pump (5 zones), an aquastat, two AC dual run caps, a condenser blower motor, and routine condenser coil flushing with Yellow Death . Your videos have been very helpful.

    You saved the day for me, sir!! LONG story short- When I installed a smart thermostat at the beginning of this past winter, I apparently took off more wires than I needed to, from the thermostat hook up terminals in the furnace, thinking they were just old, unneeded thermostat wires. The heat worked fine, but the AC wouldn't turn on, and the time has finally come to address it. In the process, I messed up even more wiring and other things, including blowing a fuse, but I got that all resolved, and the AC still wouldn't turn on, not even by jumping it on the furnace's thermostat board!! I watched this, along with some of your other videos, and hearing you mention two 24V wires going from the furnace to the AC unit set me in the right direction, so, I quickly found that one of the "old sets of thermostat wires" was actually the two wires needed to control the AC unit outside, and this video told me where to connect them!! The AC works great now!! Thanks dude!! ✌️✌️😎😎

    I'm going to second David Pace's comment below. Best video I've found after two days of watching HVAC videos. AC went down three days ago here in Texas and this wiring diagram perfectly matched my system. Very simple, very clear, solved all my problems with $100 in parts (capacitor and same 5-2-1 booster). The hardest part was keeping red and black wires straight. Red is Run on my system so I wanted as many wires coming off the run connector on the relay to match red as well. Excellent work on this video!

I HAVE WATCHED DOZENS OF VIDEOS AND EITHER THE PERSON IS HUMMING OR TALKING TO HIMSELF, NOT LOUD ENOUGH TO HEAR WHAT HE IS SAYING OR SAYING VERY LITTLE TO INFORM THE VIEWERS WHAT HE IS DOING. SOME SHOW A VIDEO IE: HOW TO INSTALL A PACKAGED UNIT AND ALL THEY DO IS SPEED UP THE VID IN HOW THEY ARE CONNECTING THE DUCT WORK, THE CONCRETE BASE, ETC. BUT NEVER SHOWING YOU STEP BY STEP LIKE YOU HAVE DONE THE CONNECTIONS FROM THE POWER DISCONNECT TO THE UNIT. THANK YOU SOO VERY MUCH FOR YOUR VID. Yes, I have watched a few of this guys videos on u tube. I actually went to a hvac refrigeration school and pretty much learned what the key parts if the whole system the first time around Wireing to the electrical functions transformers and rolesccotrol boards take on confused me at first because the school I went taught everything electrical with low end electric down with the small end of a transformer. .Also being in Arizona, AC units were not taught with the evaporator function with blower moter from the furnace. This guy does a god job breaking down the wiring in a basic way so the more complex stuff falls into place. For knowing all common the 1 120v leg is black the other leg to other side of contactor is usually red or white. I also got from this guy how the start on the compressor is wired to herm/compressor other capacitor. Jason explains this well, making it much easier tofoow the other connections. Hope he keeps doing these ,ha broadened my understanding. Thanks Jason!

    Thank you for explaining this, I was replacing my neighbor's AC condenser fan motor and he told me he got an OEM replacement which he did not, I forget the brand but I ended up finding out the motor that was replaced was a 3 wire and not a 4 like he said, so after seeing this it was a breeze getting everything wired correctly and now he has good, working A/C again. I still need to clean his coil out though, it's filthy but he insisted I come back tomorrow for that. I had originally ran it as a 4 wire but I had a feeling it wasn't right even before starting it, so I told him to wait while i verified.
    I'm just happy its working. New aftermarket replacement was a 5-wire; yellow orange brown black purple(blue? I'm really colorblind), black went to the black side of the relay line in, orange went to the common leg of the two-stage capacitor, the common leg of the capacitor also had a wire going to the red side of the relay. Purple went to the fan (F) leg of the capacitor, and the brown and yellow just needed to be wired together, I verified this on the wiring diagram on the side of the motor. I also checked to verify the capacitor (which was had been replaced before he was told the fan motor was bad) was the correct size and micro sievert designation for that motor. The compressor was wired into the hermetic portion of the capacitor and was also wired into the relay and looked correct so I left it as it.
    I've been doing A/C work on and off with my dad for years but he's done most of the electrical and he's not always the best teacher for reading schematics, this was the only thing I could find that explained everything in a simple manner and I appreciate it. Evidentially I saved him 600$ so he was happy. I'm just happy to learn something from this, thank you for your work.

    Excellent Video. FYI... for future reference (If my memory concerning schematics & electronics serves me correctly) I think the way to deal with those intersecting wiring lines is to (use one of the lines) and simply draw an arc over the other one of them.

      @WordofAdviceTV  5 років тому +4

      @Jo Tu Thank you for pointing that out! I do know how schematics are drawn, I did it that way so it looks a little cleaner. But I'm glad you mentioned that for everyone else

    Excellent communicator with a great teaching style blended with a sound working knowledge of his subject. I'll be looking for your videos for future projects.
    My AC condenser unit is a 36 year old Carrier Model 38EN-036-340 manufacture date 9/87. I couldn't find schematics or wiring diagrams online. The start capacitor was showing corrosion around the top. I went ahead and replaced the start and run capacitor and then the contactor was sticking. It would pull in with a light tap, so I replaced it as well. My AC condensor has one more piece wired in beyond your last diagram... it is a Supco TD-73 Delay on Break timer. I would love to know more about what it does.
    Your diagram here was most helpful. My system is back up and running. Thanks!

    I apologize I learned this back in the 90s so the way your wiring this the start winding is always in the circuit and it will shut off on overload because of current .
    This is why I enjoy hvac you always learn something and ask questions maybe someone will read this and tell me what I am missing

    My friendly suggestion is Title it part one then continue on adding accessories (lp. Hp,solenoid valve and so on ) then
    heat pump and defrost board .link all your videos or have a playlist.
    This way you have a nice playlist for wiring of hvac, even connections available for furnace as a heat source.

      @@WordofAdviceTV you welcome.
      you can add part 1 then continue for part 2, you can predraw it on paper in order to explain it easier than taking time to draw.

    • @mikeautostudent5562
      @mikeautostudent5562 5 років тому +2

      You can draw with thin pen on paper bcz it does not show on camera but it helps you to draw it with marker very fast this is another option.

    That was great. I only suggestion I have is when u draw crossing wire over the other with out touching, draw that line when u approach the other line instead of just crossing go to the right or left Do U over the other line and keep going . That way it is would be known those wire not connected each other.
    Thanks for your wonderful presentation though
