  • Cleaning (filleting) a walleye. Use a sharp knife, take your time and it's actually pretty easy.

    Dave you are the ultimate practical outdoorsman! This was wonderfully done with great attention to detail. You addressed removing the pin bones perfectly which makes the walleye
    much more palatable to our little children and grandchildren, to say nothing of us adult fish lovers. A++ -Ray

    Gotta say this aged well!! I re-watched this video this morning and used your instructions to get my best walleye fillets yet!! A very healthy 19 inch Ontario walleye (also called a pickerel by us oldtimers!) Many thanks!

    Brought in my first walleye in a small river from northeastern ontario, Canada. 20" beauty! Have never cleaned one, but I've done lots of bass and I'm pretty good with pike and getting the y bones out. It looks like pike are a little trickier than a walleye, so it should be a breeze. This is by far the most educational video I've seen, you're very straight forward and explain/show everything in clear detail. Really hoping to get a deer with my compound this year!!! Thank you so much for this video - cheers!

      If you can get the Y bones out of a pike, a walleye will be easy. Thanks for the generous comment and let me know how it goes deer hunting this year, KPO.

    Good one Dave, I do it a little different. (Doesn’t everybody?) I make two cuts at the tail and remove them bones by pulling it apart.....called a zipper technique. If the Walleye is big enough I also take the cheeks and the “wings”.
    Good video as always sir!👍

    I can't tell you how timely this video is. I'll be in the UP in 2 weeks for a week long fishing trip and although I've filleted many fish, I'm really weak when it comes to Walleye. I was particularly interested in the pin bones. Great timing. Continue to love your vid's.

    One must always get the cheeks, and wings. But good job.

      I didn't really grow up doing that, although I did do another vid giving it a try. Thanks for watching, KPO.

    Great videos Dave! I especially liked the pike cleaning, and fixing trailer wiring and lights! If you take video requests? Can you do another walleye, and include the cheeks and wings? Thanks, Edward

    Really nice video! Is it possible to use tweezers to pull out the pin bones like with trout/salmon to save some of that delicious meat?

    Hey Dave I cleaned a few walleye a couple weeks ago and I always find it a pain. You make it look so easy. I think my knife is never sharp enough. Do you sharpen it as you go along? How do you end up killing the fish to start? I always have a hard time with that part of the chore.

    • @KnettersPracticalOutdoors
      @KnettersPracticalOutdoors  Рік тому +1

      I just start with a sharp knife and it stays good for the cleaning session. Sometimes fish spend time in the live well. But yes once home they may get a clunk on the head.

    I notice that there wasn't any blood as you were filleting. Did you bleed it after catchig it and if so did you go by bleeding it?

    • @KnettersPracticalOutdoors
      @KnettersPracticalOutdoors  3 роки тому

      I can't remember if I bleed that one. I probably did because of the video. It's just a matter of cutting the gills. Thanks for the interest Greatlakezgirl, KPO.

    The Cheek Medallions are the best, you throwing them away is like tossing out the Backstraps and Tenderloin from freshly processed Deer or Beef. Please try to save the Cheek Meat on your next few fish...my kids fight over it! You will be delighted with the incredible reward the few seconds it takes to harvest, PROMISE!
