Just to be clear: "sliced bread" in this context refers to buying pre-sliced bread. People have been slicing their bread for millennia, with knifes. But the invention of the industrial scale bread-slicing machine, and the proper methods of packaging said bread, made it feasible to sell pre-packaged, pre-sliced bread only beginning in the 1920's.

So my brother in college ran out of toilet paper once and thought "I'll just poop on campus" and didnt buy toilet paper for a week. Then the day came. He needed to poop during the weekend. He went and decided showering would suffice. It didn't. According to him his shower smelled like poop for weeks. He kept buying and dumping Comet into his bathtub trying to clear it out. Eventually he just dumped every cleaning chemical he had down the drain including one of those jugs of the hyper acidic pipe cleaner chemicals. It was way more trouble than spending 5 dollars on toilet paper.
The fact that drew thinks we didn't slice bread at all until 1928 makes me question my faith in humanity
