Writing down Soarin' took a lot of time and energy that I don't currently have - it's also one of my favorite pieces of music of all time, which made it somewhat easier. If you want to learn to play by ear, I have two simple recommendations: get comfortable with basic music theory (especially intervals and chords), and then spend a lot of time playing stuff by ear. Just keep experimenting and experimenting, and always compare what you're playing to a recording, preferably the original.
I understand. Yet you are one of the people that are extremely talented in piano. I really think you should get a living out of this. I'm pretty sure lots of other people have asked you to write sheet music and if you write it or get someone to transcribe it, you could get a lot of money.
Hi, Joe, I love your piano arrangements. I think you are extremely talented. I am a Disney Fan and I love Disney Ride Music. I can play the piano but I am not as talented as you are in playing by ear. Unfortunately, I only found one piece of sheet music on the internet made by you, Soarin' over California. I would love to play more especially Radiator Springs Racers, Splash Mountain and Space Mountain.
Thank you for the compliments, Gabriel. Unfortunately, I haven't written most of my arrangements down. Writing them down is a slow, difficult, and frustrating process, so I rarely do it. But I promise, you CAN get better at playing by ear. I was terrible when I started. But a little bit of music theory and a lot of practice will do wonders.
Can you do Mystic Manor next please? The theme for the ride was done by Danny Elfman and it is quite good. I would really love to hear it on the piano.
Maybe, maybe not - but it doesn't matter. There are countless people out there who are more talented than I am, but I still do what I do because it brings me joy. My arrangements are pretty idiosyncratic, and they change every time I play them, which makes it difficult for anyone or anything to transcribe them into accurate and legible sheet music.
I would love to, but my sound card died a short while after I created this video, and I haven't been able to produce any more since then. =( The thing is, my entire computer needs replacing, not just the sound card, so I'm trying to save up enough money to do that. Once I've got the hardware in place again, I'm sure I'll start posting more videos...and in the mean time, I'm still playing piano every day!
UA-cam kept pressuring me to use my real name, and I eventually gave in, haha. The name 1taken (which was an accident to begin with) is now just part of the channel URL.
I understand how difficult it is. Yet you did succeed at doing the Soarin' over California music, I have it. How did you that? Anyway, if you won't write sheet music, could you tell me how you can actually play it on the piano. Should I figure out the notes by listening to your arrangement over and over again?
Wow you are so talented! It's such a pity that someone as talented as you would not even try to create a career out of this! You should be playing at concerts... Create sheet music, sell your music...
The Super Brit First off, thank you. But unfortunately, it's not that easy. To sell sheet music, I'd need to jump through a number of legal hoops - some of which are less like hoops and more like brick walls.
I totally understand that, and it might be quite frustrating. However, I don't see how someone so talented like you would have so much difficulty going through this. Many other great pianists were able to submit arrangements and get livings out of it: Check out Kyle Landry. I really think it's a pity that someone as talented as you would not use that talent!
My next video will actually probably be "The Asteroid Field" from The Empire Strikes Back. Currently working on an arrangement of that. But I'll consider Mystic Manor for future videos. :)
Selling my arrangements would require not only writing them down, but gaining permission from the copyright holders. Perhaps someday I'll have the time and patience to do this, but right now, I try to let music be a respite from the pressures of life, not something to stress about.
Thanks for the advice. But I don't think I will ever be as talented as you are. Maybe you should get a transcriber and then you don't have to write the music down.
Great work, as usual, sir! Hard to believe I've been subscribed for 4 years.
Very good. I hope to listen to more attraction music played on the piano by a trained expert. :)

You made an exceptional soundtrack sound even better! I wish I could play this well on the piano by ear.
