I'm never blatantly rude to someone on UA-cam when they've gone to the effort of creating videos and good music to share with the World. What gives people the licence to be nasty and basically horrible to those people. If you don't agree with their point of view on a topic, move on.

As a musician myself I'm proud of what you are doing, I don't get why so many musicians are so eager to give their music for free and even get upset if you want people to be compensated for their efforts. That same people usually later is complaining about how hard and unfair the music business is and how easy is for musicians to go into depression and mental health issues.
We have to be smarter and we have to be united, big corporations like Spotify are NOT your friends nor the way to go to make things better for artists.

This is something people overlook, and I did up until a few years ago - UA-camrs are not simply “people talking to cameras”.
They are a media company, and very professional in what they do, not only the video quality, but essentially all the aspects you’d expect from a media company - seeking advertisers, studying their audience, analyzing data, prioritizing high revenue content. It is a business, and when well run and with a bit of luck, it can get you far.

I am always impressed by the calm joy you present when doing one of these conversations with the community. Your gracious answers to sometimes rather rude posts are a lovely example that I would love to see more people emulate.
To any who doubt the usefulness, I've been hovering around the edge of diving into Ms. Spender's music for a while, being interested in what she has to say. Each time I encounter her videos here, I am made more likely to switch from a mere viewer to a very small part of her financial backing. It's surely not the only way to build a community, but she does this one well.

So many 'artists' seem to have forgotten the 'art' part of it. Not everyone is going to appreciate your music and your insight, but for every one of those people who have that self-entitlement to tell you how this or that will fail, I wonder what percentage of them really have what it takes to go from a starving artist to a success story. I have watched you for quite a few years and find your outlook and trials to be great content about the struggles of being a real artist. Keep doing what you do, and don't listen to the people who want to do nothing better than be trolls. I'd bet if they spent as much time supporting artists (who are putting their souls on display in the hope that someone will appreciate it), and less time being trolls that they'd be much happier people and maybe a little more human.

You are brilliantly sailing through the unknown waters of musician independence in 2023. You are a prolific artist and you understand this new platform of the business side. It isn't a job, it's a life. As Rick Beato once quipped: nothing to being a UA-camr, I just work a hundred hours a week.😆
You have my support as one of SO MANY OF US who live vicariously through you. The naysayers complain simply because they can't do what you have already accomplished.
Can't wait to hear more from the CD, "Chicago" is a great start. Can't wait to receive my copy.

Born in 1959, I have eschewed physical copies of music altogether. But after watching this channel for a while I am willing to pay for the bit of plastic to support you. Most of those questioning you in these comments cannot see the force of your personality in gathering fans. Old style music stars had their music and whatever the music corporation they were signed to allowed out there. You, Mary, are speaking directly to me (well, it feels like). I love that line - "rise of the middle-class musician". I think modern models of making a living in music via streaming, social media, patreon, etc. are bringing back the more accessible/relatable musicians. I think the gatekeepers were missing the gems and imposing their taste in music on the general populace. Now is better. Much better. And I'm happy to see the decline of large record companies with their distribution monopolies.

You go Mary! Most walks of business and indeed life have naysayers. I was self employed (a company owner) for nearly 20 years and was successful for 3 basic reasons… I was very good at my profession but worked harder than most others, I did not do what everyone else in my field did (I offered services they couldn’t), and I had multiple income streams - but from a relatively narrow bandwidth (I didn’t try to be all things to all people). When I retired a couple years ago, I put my energy into music, my avocation for 50 years. You are obviously succeeding, for the same basic reasons… not to say these 3 things are all it takes, they’re not. But, they are pretty universal in the business world, and in life. I for one applaud what you are doing and your willingness to take chances with unproven directions. You will continue to succeed, and most importantly… you seem happy!!! Our world needs more happiness and people like you create that! BRAVO! BTW, I’m anxiously awaiting your album! 🎶🎵

Good on you, Mary. I admire your ability to deal with the patronising comments in such a coherent and positive way - after all you have spent more time and effort tackling the issues they are so sure they know all about. You are also a great example of how to think for yourself and not succumb to the giant squid that is Spotify, sucking the income away from small, independent artists and depositing it in the accounts of the already rich and successful artists. (I want my sub to go to the people I actually listen to, which it doesn't).
I think you have a bright future not just as a musician, but as a music business educator and pioneer. Three cheers for people like you who are an example to others, and demonstrate that streaming isn't the answer for many musicians and writers.

    Hi Mary, great video!
Just a thought, regarding the concept of some thing “physical that your fans can hold “. We can definitely wear a T-shirt or a hat, put up a poster or drink coffee out of branded cup.
The stems idea is interesting, but have you ever considered a graphic picture book?
For a portion of what it might cost to print physical CDs and graphic design for them, you could make a physical, full color book that contains behind-the-scenes photos, some special notes from you, maybe images of your original lyric sheets, etc.
Now there is something we can hold in our hands, and actually enjoy looking at and reading while we listen to your music, however we do including streaming it.
It’s a real book, doesn’t have to be super long, but it’s an extension of what many people have done for LPs and CDs…perhaps.
I for one, would love to check out your charts and lyric sheets…studio pics, guitar images etc
not only is it fun for your fans, but it stands as a very useful physical object, that doesn’t compromise how your music is released and still add to your margins.
Speaking for myself, I would gladly pay between 20 and $50 for something like that from an artist like you.
You could even sign a few and personalize notes for a slightly higher fee for those interested in that.
    Keep up the good work!

Music in the form of digital bits is fleeting. Almost no one do a backup of their phones, and few use a paid cloud service. Phones last for few years, and cloud space gets lost when the subscription is no longer paid. All of this to say, that digital-only music is easily lost, and the existence of a media like the CD is fundamental for your fans. LP are even better, both for the analogue format, and because you can include much more printed material with the disc.
    Thank you for the video...

There has always been a spectrum of musicians, those who make it world wide, those who conquer a single country, those who make a living as supporting acts and doing small venues, those who just make a living doing clubs, weddings and minor festivals and finally those who have other jobs and play at weekends. Those who work teaching music and play as often as they can secure a position either live of for recordings. However they find themselves as musicians they are valuable to the whole musical ecosystem. Almost all session musicians are by definition better players than the bands and artists they work for. The best musicians in the world are people most would not know of. Fame does not equate to talent and or skill. Some will never have written, produced or played the music they are famous for. They may even have sung only with auto tune.
Mary You Are Amazing and if you ever did want to be a mum you could do that as well as being a talented musician and fantastic vocalist.

I've taken to making a short batch of my own CDs, literally cut/glued by my own hands in small numbers, they seem to get good attention and I can hoard supplies without having to have boxes full of CD's I may never sell (i still have old CD's from old old old bands because we had to buy so many) but I've also started to think about "guitarist editions" or "producer editions" so people get the album and can jam along with my tracks or do their own mixes, it's time consuming but worth it in the long run

Keep doing what you're doing. Your videos are very informative and inspiring to a lot of people, including myself. I just recently decided I want to try to become a musician, pretty much from scratch, perhaps as part of a midlife crisis (I'm 41). It's something I've daydreamed about since I was a teenager but never actually tried. I'm aware that the first thing I have to do is actually learn to play and that alone is going to take time, but I'm hoping that maybe within a few years time I can get good enough to form a band with some like minded people and make a half decent living. I'm keeping my expectations low because I'm mature enough to know that this is not an easy goal and will take a time and a lot of effort. Don't quit your day job and all that. But you and others like you (I discovered your channel from UA-cam recommending your interview with Samurai Guitarist, who is another content creator I've recently been following) have given me hope that such goals are actually possible for someone who wants it enough to put in the effort.
You come across as a knowledgeable and capable person who is passionate about what you do. The fact that you do actually make a living from your passion is a clear sign that you actually know what you're talking about. I've always believed in the value of constructive criticism, but I've also long believed that most criticism you get (on any subject) from random anonymous schmucks on the internet comes from people who either don't know nearly as much as they think they do or are just jealous haters, if not both. Please keep doing what you're doing, be yourself.
    And thank you.

Mary is, without any shadow of a doubt, more business savvy than all the keyboard warrior know-it-all men that think fame = success in music (or anything). Bravo Mary!

Out of the blue, I listened to a lecture about 16th century Mennonite art in Holland. How iconoclasm disrupted the traditional guilds and commission system. Portrait, still life, and landscape painting emerged, but sculpture disappeared. The take away is that the economic environment changed, and in true evolutionary fashion, diversity provided how to adapt to the new environment. As long as music is happening, and young people are acquiring the skills for making music, we are doing just fine.

Absolutely stellar video. You’ve definitely inspired me to start doing more UA-cam content once I get some good equipment. It’s also very encouraging to see that people nowadays can make a living doing music and they don’t have to be big pop or rock stars. Question though. What’s good beginner equipment? Stuff to make not just topic video such as this but also quality covers.

I really appreciate the perspective you offer in your videos! It's helpful to know that even being successful doesn't stop the occasional hate comment from coming in...it's really easy to start doubting yourself when people pour hatred at you just because you put a video on the internet, but I really like the way you framed it that there are people that will like what you do and you just have to find them. Thank you for your positivity Mary, it's videos like these that help remind me to keep pursuing music as a hobby no matter what happens externally :)

Hello Mary. I recently pre-ordered Super, Sexy Heartbreak. Found you on UA-cam. Listened to your artistry on Qobuz and found you and your music to be inspiring. Coming from a British family also worked in your favor. 😁Let this serve as testimony that your formula will work. Damn the naysayers and full steam ahead! Take care.❤

I've been a fan for years....of your music, how you run your channel, how engage with your followers/fans. and especially how you present yourself as a person. You get to control the camera of course, but you've always come across as genuine and this video is another good example. You could have approached some of these comments much differently (I mean, seriously, "and do something like become a mother".......what just happened? What year is this?) but you approached each of them tactfully and took the opportunity to share experience and wisdom when appropriate. I agree with many of the other comments here: What you're doing is working so keep being you and doing things the way that is "right" for you.

Society evolves and so do musicians and artists who adapt to utilize and take advantage of new technologies. Can't wait for the CD to arrive and look forward to all your future endeavors - both musically, artistically and as a content creator on social media. Stay positive and keep moving forward, regardless of what others may say.

I love this notion of a middle class musician. If that had been an option to me 30 years ago, my career path might've been different. I loved making music, but it was so risky of a career, and I was also good at computer programming.

Well done Mary. If you don't try you don't know. Having spent 30 plus years in the Music industry I witnessed firsthand it's down fall, mainly by the march of new technology and the Record companies' denial and lack of imagination in how to deal with it. A new model must be out there and it seems to me that you are approaching it in a pretty pragmatic way.
On a side note; it always amazes me how little appreciation is given for a musician's trade. How many other professions require such dedication from childhood to become an actual Musician....

Spotify wants product to sell without paying full price for said product. Good for Spotify and consumers but not for music makers. It seems that your solution is not to depend on Spotify. Good luck Mary!
