These videos are kinda like food recipes...it gives beginners like me a place to start. As I gain experience and an understanding what I am doing, I experiment and develop a method/technique I like. Same as a good cook does with a recipe. Thanks for sharing.
Keep mine sharp. The stropping makes all the difference. If I want a new angle I will mark the bevel with a sharpie to help me. Duane Watts tunes his up with 3000 grit. That’s what I do then strop.
hi Jw. I meant the first step was to use the sand paper to get the mirror finish, then move over to the leather strop. I usually do 5-7 times on each side. Maybe more right after the sand paper step.
Awesome! Dumb questions but can you use rouge on other blades (skivers, utility knife, head knife, etc) or is that too rough for thinner blades? And should I use rouge on a ceramic swivel blade, or just strop it on plain leather? I've heard ceramic doesnt need stropping as often, but I dont know how less that often is haha.
Yes, of course you can. I strop my leather cutting knives, as well as, my personal knives. Ceramic does hold an edge better, but there's no harm in stropping it more often than not.
@@maddawgnoll ok cool! And, I've never used rouge before, though I have a red bar on my desk waiting to be used. Do I need to clean the blade afterward? I would for anything going near food for sure, but like my pocket knife, would that need to have any rouge washed off or something?
@Glorfindel_117 I just wipe it clean so there's nothing that gets on the leather when you start cutting. As far as my pocket knife, I treat it the same. Wipe it clean, wash it if you plan on using it for anything like food
Very informative video

Thank you so much! I remember seeing my Dad do this when I was young, but was not sure about when or why!! 😅
I’m off to find some 600 grit! Top tip thank you!
Thank you! How do you know when to stop stropping (part 2)? -you said part 1 is mirror finish.

I strop all my blades. Even razor blades. You'll find that stropping even a new blade will make it cut smoother.

Hmmm... half of this information goes against what I have been told by professional leather crafters and my experience. But to each their own.
