I will be making episodes until either I die, the internet implodes, the Vogons finally construct their intergalactic superhighway, or the more preferable scenario, if I finally make a breakthrough with my game development efforts! :B
I'll give this game exactly one thing: the animation is quite smooth. Though the art style itself is pretty rough, all the cutscenes and monster sprites flow very nicely. This is one of those games that would be interesting to try and unshittify.
15:27 Regarding instrument volumes lowering after the song loops: the only other game where I've heard this happen is Nitemare 3D (1994). Several of the game's songs (AdLib) have certain instruments whose volumes are lowered after the song in question loops. Don't know why it only affects a few instruments in that game. If you restart such a song in N3D after the volume drop, the volumes become normal for one pass again.
Right, but in this case it affects the entire song, ONLY the Z key fixes it, and the song doesn't restart; the volume just goes right back up to normal mid-playback! :o
This age in gaming reminds me of UA-cam in 00's through the early 10's, where the main audience seemed more interested in rude then anything else. Avgn, Spoony, etc
I don't know about the manual but the comic for this game is on the Internet Archive. That said... the comic doesn't really explain a whole lot. I wonder if its possible to add the machete graphic and original animations back into the CD-ROM version?
I have tried to play this era of first person shooters multiple times for nostalgia sake. They make me motion sick as an adult. I wonder if it is because my screen size was much smaller in the early 90s.
Wolfenstein 3D, played as an adult, is the ONLY game that ever gave me motion sickness. I think the super speedy running through the rough environment doesn't help.
@@Pixelmusement Really? Could that be a version difference? I remember watching a playthrough where the guy doesn't use the flare gun at all... Could be my memory failing though.
_Subpar Midi doots. Odd pause. More subpar midi doots. Something that resembles melody, but is quite entirely unlike a melody._ Oh. I see the music is playing slightly better on this version. Also, I like how in spite of the crude art style, when you rescue the lassie, she becomes a (very) badly digitized photo.
I can't track review requests properly here on UA-cam so please make sure you fire off eMails to me for any requests you have! The eMail to use can be found in the credits at the end of every ADG video! :B
@@SteveMacSticky LGR did a video on this game way back around the same time as BrutalMoose; There is no such review on MandaloreGaming's channel as of right now. :P
I had the fun of watching "Macaw45" struggle through the original release on Twitch without consulting hints. He had a lot of trouble with the zombies insta-killing him from behind, particularly when he was killing a whole line of them in front of him; did you not run into that, or is it possibly just a difference between relases?
All of the spawn locations are fixed, not random. A few of the entry points on certain screens can end up causing trouble with spawns happening all around you, but I found it's possible to get a handle on every situation, at least on Play Level 2, though some are certainly more difficult than others. :P
The Flare Gun. It has one flare and if you use the Flare Gun at any moment it fires its only flare off and if you don't do that as the VERY LAST THING in the progression of the game's events, you can't win. :P
@@PixelmusementYIKES! A grade A example of a HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT moment (As I like to call things like that) At least you can fire the Silver Arrow in Zelda 1 multiple times after getting it.
A new ADG episode? **unzips pants** I'm ready. IOD is a crappy game, everyone knows it. But i don't hate it. In fact, I kinda like it. I bought the floppy version back in the day and I still have it because I remember being happy with this game. As bad as it is, it CAN be fun, and the gore is quite fun to watch. The CD version not only changed the machete and removed some animations, it made the game easier in some areas. Getting the shotgun is easier and some puzzles were simplified. The floppy version is better, even if the music sounds WAY worse.
Hey @pixelmusement , there was a really good reason to leave machetes out of a game in 1994/95. Because what people used them for back then. And if I could make a wish: I really (really really) like your videos, but... could please try looking stuff up once in a while? As a generally curious person it always makes me sad when you stumble upon something interesting you don't know and then decide that it's just not worth the effort. I mean, probably it isn't, but maybe sometimes there are really interesting stories to discover or... historical facts anyone should know, like this time.
I don't even know the first thing to attempt to search for in the case of what you're asking. Looking up info on Machetes right now I see that they were the primary tool used during a genocidal conflict in Rwanda in 1994, but that really doesn't give me enough to go on and seems like a poor reason for making a visual-only change (it's still called a "Machete") here in the game. I don't mention this often but I'm not very good at looking up historical details of things thus why I try to avoid that kind of research in case I get it wrong or miss pertinent details trying to get it right. I think you'd agree, skipping on commenting on a particular tangent is better than getting it wrong! When certain information is blatant and easily available though I do make an effort to include it! :B
The fact that you have Depth Dwellers on disc is honestly impressive and horrifying both at once.
You can blame Clint from LGR for that one. :B
@@PixelmusementI knew Clint had something to do with that. :p
you know how it is with curses: gotta pass 'em along to the next victim!
I honestly liked this game back then, and a lot of other Wolvenstein clones.
But this also has to do with the fact our PC could not run DOOM back then
So glad you still make episodes. I discovered this series today.

The surfer zombie guy looks like Duke Nukem. I remember seeing this on a top 100 worst games list, and there were some doozy's on that list
Shoutouts to The Skinny Man. He *sure does make music.*

The animations are shockingly good. They've got more frames than the good games of the era.
animations remind me of early newgrouds videos
I am personally very fond of absurd gore in games, and this one resonates with me in a positive way. This is like Brutal Doom's spiritual predecessor.

No, it does it to me too. I think it's because it's fake 3D. That ray-traced pseudo3D sprite stuff can do things to some people's brains.
Wolfenstein 3D, played as an adult, is the ONLY game that ever gave me motion sickness. I think the super speedy running through the rough environment doesn't help.
You can also escape the island with the inflatable canoe.
Yes, but you STILL need the Flare Gun following to signal your location and get the ending animation. :P
