This episode deals with adding running notes to a bass line. Some techniques for realizing basses this way are discussed, tips for doing it on the fly are included, as well as possible avenues for practice. This can also be used as a technique for non-keyboard players to realize continuo parts!

Very helpful. I'm using Mortensen's book and have been struggling with what I'm allowed to do in the bass and it still be a figuration prelude. Clear now thankyou.

Hi Nico, I'm so glad I stumbled upon your channel. Which notation software are you using here?

Hey there, glad to have you here! I use Finale for composition, but in my videos for the handwritten stuff I use ProCreate.

First of all, thank you so much, Nicola, for all the work you put into these videos! They are so helpful!
One question: How do you incorporate passing tones into these figurations in a robust way? For instance, I can easily fill in a third with a passing tone, but what happens when the new harmony suggests an interval of a fourth? I can't fill that interval in with a single passing tone. Do I just use two "passing tones to nowhere" -- i.e., a three-note scale segment? Or am I forced to change shapes?

Hi, Henry, thanks for watching! So...I've shown how it's possible to use just one passing tone in the case of a fourth (you put it in a different voice!). There isn't always a way, given any two arbitrary harmonies, to insert a passing tone. There are also things called escape tones, neighbor notes, etc. which are related concepts that can help you here and which I can address in a later video. If you mean to ask how do I *melodically* connect the interval of the fourth, then of course you can do it with two notes! A triplet, perhaps an eighth and two sixteenths, etc. Does this help at all? Feel free to message me on Facebook: my name is Nicola Canzano, we can chat about it when I get a second!

Lets say instead of changing harmony, the bass is arpegiating a single harmony for a whole measure. is it okay for the bass to make a dissonance with a note from the right hand figuration even though they're the same harmony?

In most cases, yes, but it would have to be taken case-by-case.

    What program are you using?

To do the writing stuff? Pro-create. I'm sure there's a better option, but you can only expect someone who makes a living playing historical instruments to be so technologically advanced...

I feel like it would be better if you explained everything with your hands on the keyboard instead of writing it down. it'd also be faster

I had the same feeling in the last video I made. Good comment, thanks so much for your input!
