In these reviews of dog trailers, I am surprised at how little time is devoted to showing the actual 'customer experience' of the pooches themselves! Do they look comfortable and secure, are they being jiggled about on the no-suspension carriers, is the interior suitably padded so that their joints are not over-stressed, etc?. Probably the dogs would put up with almost any discomfort to be with their owners, but I do think that these matters should also be in focus, apart from the construction values. Maybe I am just a softie?
That is certainly a good point. Jasper did not like going in the trailer the first several times we used it. It is still not his favorite, but he does go in without a fuss. He seems to be much happier when we keep the front flap open so that he can stick his head out.
@@jasonreyes9504 There's as bed you can buy that helps, also you can use any dog bed in it or even thick pillows. Also there are now aftermarket shocks you add to this and the tailwagon.
Absolutely true. We have upgraded to the Burley Bark Ranger XL trailers, which are even more expensive, but I love it every time I use it. You get what you pay for.
Thank you for this video. I’ve been researching ebikes and have narrowed the choice to a Rad bike. Still undecided as to which would be best for me and my pug. Recently I read in a forum (don’t remember which one) some Rad owners saying they couldn’t attach the trailer to the wheel because of the motor and I’ve been panicking ever since! Lol. Apparently they had to purchase some kind of part that would attach the trailer at another location on the bike. I contacted the company and they replied but they didn’t provide any useful information- I think they may have been protecting themselves from potential legal issues. Who knows. Anyway. I’m glad to see this- I’m still looking for more info on it in relation to the Rad Wagon and/or the Rad Runner1
I guess it is possible that there could be a challenge attaching the trailer to some models of the bike, but it was extremely easy and straightforward on my RadMini. We had no trouble getting it installed and have not had any issues since. Good luck!
Ok, a few things you should be aware when using a bike trailer. I used one for my two kids for many of their toddler years. First, if you are going fast enough to wear a helmet (any speed faster than walking) remember your trailer passengers are not protected. Second, be aware of wider turns and wheel width. Your bike clearance does not mean the trailer will clear. (I've toppled my trainer off and on curbs and clipped vertical poles). Third, load shifts. If your passengers push to one side or back, the trailer will be move and may topple. Some trailers have canted wheels to prevent this. Smaller wheels may flip easier. Fourth, always keep the front nets and use the clear window as debris and water is always kicked up by your rear tire. When riding with a partner, it's wise to have trailer in front and your partner in back to keep an eye thing. Have fun.
I appreciate your video but I missed how I could attach my dog to the trailer . In the car I have a seat belt attachment to connects to his harness. Is there such a way to attach and secure my escape artist?
Thanks, John. The trailer does fully enclose with mesh panels front and back to keep your dog contained. We used ours that way for several months until our dog became more comfortable. After that, we were able to keep the front panel open so he could stick his head out and look out more easily.
Thanks, Kaitlin. I’ll see if I can get to that. The bracket that was included with the trailer attached to the rear axle using the existing bike hardware. No modifications were needed and that was very easy. Once the bracket is in place, the arm of the trailer fits into the bracket and then a pin holds the arm to the bracket. There is then a safety strap that is part of the arm that loops through the bike frame for added security.
Thank you so much! There is not a leash buckle (at least that I can remember) inside. We just used it again on Saturday and continue to love the product.
I would think so! Ours is not quick release, but attached without any issue to the standard axle. I would think it should work with a quick release axle as well. Good luck!
This is so much better than the burley nomad we bought, this wasnt available for dogs ..my pup keeps jumping off the nomad. Might have to invest in this one instead
Thank you for this! I'm looking at getting a Rad bike and need to be able to bring my 25 pound pup with me. He's too big for a basket so I needed to know if the RadMini's had the power to pull a trailer.
My guide to happiness: Step 1: Get a Golden Retriever. Step 2: Get Rad Mini's (don't be deceived by the word mini, they're standard M/L bikes but they fold down and become mini. They could more acurately be called Bad Ass Rad Foldies. barf lol.) Step 3: Get another Golden Retriever Step 4: Get TailWagons Step 5: Get a Roomba to automatically sweep up the fur while you're out riding your bikes with your dogs.
Curious, how does the trailer/doggy affect battery life/milage, ability to climb, braking, and bike suspennsion? I also have a larger puppin who needs me to be a taxi cab... Thanks!
Thanks, Ric! We typically only go for an hour or two each time, and haven’t had any issues running out of battery. Our dog is around 65 pounds. Hope this helps!
An employee at Rad Power Bikes recommended that we find a trailer that doesn't connect directly on the bike wheel. Do you know why someone might recommend that? Do you have tips to modify the trailer attachment or should we feel okay attaching it directly to the bike wheel as you've shown here?
Thanks for the comment. We attached the trailer to the outside of the rear axle and it worked perfectly. We didn't have to modify anything and we've used it a ton without any issues. We did 17 miles puling Jasper behind our RadMini yesterday at the Grand Canyon. :) The set-up is working without a flaw, and nothing needed to be modified. Good luck!
I cannot answer definitively other than we have used it now for nearly 2 years and have never had any issues with mounting the bracket to the rear axle. Good luck!
That part did indeed come with the bike. It was easy to install and we have not had any issues pulling the trailer up or down hills with our bike. Good luck!
Hi - we just purchased 2 rad utility e bikes and are researching a dog trailer for our 2 frenchies. Do you think the Burley would fit onto this one? Your video very informative!’
The part of the trailer that permanently attaches to the bike seems to be pretty universal. I do not think it would be a problem to attach to any bike. Good luck!
Although I cannot say definitively since I have not tried that model of bike, my guess is that it would be fine. The trailer hooked up just fine to our RadMini.
Enjoyed your video. Question, do you think this can hook up to a electric scooter seat post? I ordered a 5600w electric scooter and it will be for my 55 lbs Bulldog. Most important can the hitch hook up to the seat post. Thanks
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. In order to attach the TailWagon to a seat post, you would need to radically modify the bar that attaches to the rear axle. I suppose that it could be done, but it would need to be fabricated by someone with some significant tooling and experience.
The Burley Tail Wagon dog trailer sells for around $300. The Rad bikes vary depending on model, and they occasionally go on sale. You can check out all of the options at www.radpowerbikes.com/. Good luck!
Well heck. Have almost broken my wrist and still cannot get past step one of clicking the trailer together. Will not go together. Don’t know if it’s the big plastic clips they use now or what but I’ve about given up.
The weight limit is 75 pounds. Jasper is around 62 pounds, and I think he is cramped in there. Not sure about putting a 75 pound dog inside. As far as Malcom, they do make some great kid trailers. Better yet, get one big enough for an adult, then hook it to HIS bike so YOU can ride!!! 😊
My friend has a Radrunner, which is basically the same at the axel. We were cautioned by not only Radpower staff (though they gave us more of a "we cant guarantee anything"), but also by other bike mechanics about attaching a trailer hitch to the rear axel since it has to deal with the stress of the motor as well. Did you consider this when installing it? Has it caused any problems? Thanks for any feedback.
At the time we shot the video, our dog was not a fan of loading up into the trailer. It would have been a very clumsy and awkward shot for sure! I would have to lure him in with treats or pick him up and put him in. It has certainly gotten better!

I would agree. We recently upgraded to the Burley Bark Ranger XL which provides additional needed room. A great improvement! Still very expensive, but well made and I'm happy with the purchase.
We have not had any issues with the hitch at all. As far as the interior size of the trailer, it is a little cramped for our Golden as well and he is less than 70 pounds. I wish that it were a little taller inside. Have fun!

you get what you pay for. this is a safety issue and buying something made poorly isn't wise or safe. at all. Burley has made their name off of safety and durability.
I would agree that it is too small for some golden retrievers. Our dog is 64 pounds and is certainly a smaller size for the breed. The trailer is designed to hold dogs up to 80 pounds.
