- Award-winning Melbourne artist Vincent Fantauzzo doesn’t hold with the idea of the starving artist. Instead, he's made a spectacular life for himself despite leaving school at 13 barely able to read or write.
His teenage years were spent working menial jobs and dabbling in petty crime until his boxing coach encouraged him to follow his passion for art.
When he was outed for plagiarism at art school, his trouble with words was finally diagnosed as dyslexia.
After successfully completing his fine arts degree he forged a successful career as one of Australia’s best known portrait artists. Heath Ledger, Julia Gillard, Baz Luhrmann and wife Asher Keddie are some of his high-profile subjects.
Today Vincent no longer sees his dyslexia as a disability. Instead he calls it the gift that allows him to see the world and his subjects from a different perspective.

I think we are all programmed uniquely different. What is normal anyway ? We all learn differently, there is no right or wrong. What an amazing gift you have and the compassion and understanding of those who struggle. Such a blessing !
He can paint something that looks like a photograph, how can that not be acclaimed or universally praised? How could the art world be so close minded when art in itself is the flexibility of expression?

I have a son with dyslexia who also found his own talents in construction managing huge building project. I remember taking him to the construction school at Arizona State University. We went to the learning disabilities. The counselor said to him you've never accepted your disability. She took him away for an hour and a half signed him up for their program and graduated cum laude. He has saved the company he works for millions of dollars because he sees thing in a different way and can correct them. He is also very very funny W/O hurting anyone.

Instead of being swept under the carpet, discarded & forgotten as most hv experienced in a very tender age, we, as a society, families, countries & etc, hv wasted & lost immense giftedness & talents, unnecessarily, but thank God Vincent managed to break through the cracks! Let's not waste another talent or life eh...

The critic who says he's a good illustrator and colourist, but not a groundbreaking artist, oh my word! It's true that not everyone can hang a urinal on a wall and call it art, but if you cultivate the right image, have the right stylist, and generate enough shock value, it's not that hard. Being able to capture the soul of a person on canvas the way Vincent Fantauzzo does is a very singular and spectacular thing! The depth of his work is what is groundbreaking.

Oh my goodness.....The way you've felt...I'm 38 years old and I've felt that way my whole life...The system does not make sense nor room for people like us.

I really loved this.
I went to primary school with Vincent in Essendon, or as he was known at the time as 'Vince' and there are a lot of stories coming to mind. From St Theresas discos or at the local station. I didn't think in a million years he would become what he has become. Bloody phenomenal story Vince, I'm proud of you.
Amazing to me how many comments from people here show how much they don't get this. Unless you have had similar experiences, I guess people just miss what is being shared here.
What might have been. This could be my brother's story! He is 70 yrs old now.

I can relate to his school experience. I was always getting in trouble for drawing on my school work, I was on permanent Saturday detention for 3 years. I was constantly out of my depth, overwhelmed by my school work and a straight C-D student.
I went to an all girls private school in Sydney. I hated it.
I remember once in junior school, our teacher invited our parents to visit the classroom to watch up doing maths “games”.
I very quickly realised that on that day it would be my turn to answer questions out aloud.
All the parents were standing around the edge of the room, my mother was there (incredibly). I started trying to get the teacher’s attention. I was panicking. I started fake coughing until the teacher asked me to go out to the bathroom to get a drink of water. I then stayed in the bathroom until the school bell rang and our parents went home. That afternoon my teacher asked me to stay behind and she then asked me if everything was alright. I didn’t know what to say. I knew things weren’t “alright” but I didn’t know how to explain or express it.
I really needed help but I didn’t know what help and I also didn’t want to get in trouble with my mother. I’m not saying that I was dyslexic, I don’t know what I was. I was reminded by this program of how horrible my school experience was in it’s entirety.
Vincent is such a decent, honest man. And a fabulous artist. As states "Vincent has a deeply felt engagement with human beings". Yep, he does.
"I failed with flying colours." There's a message I'll never forget.

Back to the point, it is common for any kids coming from disadvantaged family background with slow brain development with very limited lifestyle. The brain struggles in literacy and numeracy is common for anyone esp at 14 to deal with harsh and abstract math, science or classical English.
Because we never have these similar experiences of sophisticated knowledge thru play in our childhood time. This guy continued practicing in visual arts of course the skills in drawing and painting is better than the average due to ling turn training. Or we can call it as gift in arts.
Probably because she is an actress. A very successful one in fact. She’s won most popular actress 5 years in a row and the Gold Logie. Surprised you don’t recognise her, even if it was just from ads on TV

These really irk me. His parents are too busy partying, to even notice that their kid was having serious issues in doing his work. Shouldn’t have been difficult to know he had a serial case of dyslexia. So sad.
His parents failed him, yet I’m sure they’re not living in those commissioned apts anymore.
What a shame this blessed soul had to work so hard to fix what shouldn’t have ever happened to him to begin with.
Sure he’s fine now...but not without all of those issues he had to suffer thru on his own.
Had that professor just kicked him out on the spot- as he had full authority to do- he instead took a moment to see if just maybe there was a problem.
I cant imagine the chaos that man had to suffer through- all unnecessarily.
Thank God he fought through and is such a success now.

He’s got an incredibly rare talent however I do not believe that the school system failed him as he said it did. His family and the school system can’t help him if he chooses to keep his struggles a big secret, which he did all the way even up to his adulthood. It’s a shame that he didn’t ask for help earlier on to avoid the struggles he unnecessarily went through but it’s wonderful to see that he nevertheless came out on the other side with great success.
I disagree, well resourced, supported and informed teachers try to figure out why a student is failing a class and acting up. No kid wants to fail. He was just a child who didn’t understand what was wrong.
As a teacher I disagree, the school system fails many children. Many teachers are under resourced and overworked and don’t pick up on the signs or don’t have the mental space to do something about it.
Children want to do well, they are compelled to want to do well.
