- A Tribute to Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel.
400 years ago, our country Bhutan was known as Lhomon and its people were known as Monpa meaning ignorant. Many Buddhist scholars and masters had arrived in Bhutan who contributed in the Dharmic flourishing of the country. However, there is no account of any of these masters ruling the secular part of the country.
In 1616, the magnificent Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel treaded down the path from Tibet into the country. Before he had arrived, the country was divided into many sects, each ruled by different rulers.
Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel united the country under one ruler and created laws where there were no laws. He initiated the dual system of government in the country which is still being followed. Under his ruling, peace and harmony prevailed in the country. Today our country is able to stand out among the many developed countries as a unique and a sovereign nation.
Therefore, this day, the 10th day of the 3rd month of the Lunar Calendar is considered to be an important day for the Bhutanese people as this day marks the demise of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. Various events are coordinated around the country as a tribute to the glorious Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel on this particular day.
