The new President of Burundi, Major Pierre Buyoya on Sunday has cautioned against foreign intervention as a way of stopping the country being torn apart by civil war.
His comments were made ahead of the meeting of the East African regional summit later this week in Tanzania to discuss Burundi.
At a church in the capital city of Bujumbura, people gather to pray together for peace.
These are difficult times here, with the military coup last week Burundi now has a new leader but the same old problem: 15 per cent of the population holds power over the remaining 85 per cent and is not willing to share it.
East African leaders have condemned the coup in Burundi and further discussions are to be held at an regional summit Wednesday in Arusha, Tanzania.
The U-N Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali has called for troops to prevent ethnic slaughter.
Though the idea has not gained much support, the new President stressed that foreign intervention was not the solution to Burundi's problems.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
"This idea of intervention of the foreign troops have been very, very badly received by the Burundian population and personally I don't believe that this can be a solution. The solution of Burundian problem is in a political dialogue."

"It was insurrection her in Burundi, for weeks in Bujumbura particularly in gangs from the street were going to overthrow the institution and put the country in chaos."

Since late 1993, at least 150, 000 people have died in spams of violence as Hutus have steadily taken up arms against Tutsis.
The army has also been implicated in many killings.
It is believed that the coup's supporters say that Buyoya will be able to control the army and the police.
Buyoya agrees that reform is required in the army and says that he is the one who started it.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
The government was fighting his own army. In any country you can't have discipline if you have such a situation. Now it is to restore discipline, to restore confidence. It is said that Burundian army has to be reformed, I am the one who started the reform of the military."

Critics, however note that in 1988, under Buyoya's leadership, the army killed 15, 000 Hutus in countrywide massacres.
The situation in Bujumbura Sunday was relatively calm.
