Sanding to fit provides more surface area contact. I would also slip to fit so only 1/4-1/2" haft proud of the head. That's just my preference. That handle looks long enough for that fit tho. I saw a few years back the Rinaldi axe testing showed they were just ignorant to wood!
If it seems like your axe has a loose head because the handle isn't big enough, you might try asking the store where you purchased it for a fix. I'm sorry, but I don't know how to help you

Mine has a huge gap at the top of the eye which the handle isn't big enough to fill (front to back) and wobbles. Any fix for this?
