- Viking Air is quickly ramping up production of its new build Twin Otter 400 series. AVweb's Russ Niles toured the Victoria, British Columbia factory with VP of Operations Dan Tharp, a Wichita aircraft production veteran recently hired by Viking to boost production.
i work at viking and we are now making a plane ever 9 days! great company to work for
Joey Olson Is Twin Otter 400 series is pressurized aircraft ?
Love to see this. Love the twin otter. Flew them all the time when I was a kid.
I wish the best to all of you. I do hope you'll achieve your goals in this production. Hard work will make it possible.
I worked for Air New England and Precision Airlines. Both flew the Twin Otter. I was a rampy/ticket agent but I loved that plane! I'm very happy to see it lives on! Its no surprise to me there is still a huge demand for that airplane.
i work for loganair we have 2 of these little gems terrific aircraft !
Wow! What a great story. This is just so cool, I wish them luck. The Twin Otter is a wonderful aircraft, glad to see it doing so well. Thanks for the video.
Very nice!
Viking has the TC for the Beaver as well but there are no plans to resume production.
jeez...the otter has a really nice cockpit. LONG stretch from what it used to be
It is power of Industrial engineering
Twin Otters are great M'kay?
I heard a rumor that the original specs for the Beaver were bought and someone intends on producing it again. I would love to hear some news on this.
One new Twin Otter has been manufactured (probably) since this video, as this video was posted over 18 days ago :-).
Tengo un aire acondicionado se me daño y no encuentro el respuesto aqui en Panamá pueden alludarme.
What is the replacement for a DC-3 ? Another DC-3 !
Keep the Twin Otter alive.
So cal love
I have over 4,000 flight hours in the DHC6-300. Love that plane. Was wondering what the rated horse power is on the PT-6 engines used on the 400 series.
Ron Fill more Sir is 400 series is available in Pressurized options ?
I don't know, interesting question! The 300 has a max service ceiling of 25,000 feet. When I first checked out in the Otter I was flying in the Colorado Rockies. Often flew at 15,000 feet on O2!
Sir how much payload Twin Otter will carry if an airport is at 11000 ft ? Sorry for baking question if you cold answer me plz ....😄
It has been 42 years since I last flew the Twin Otter. I have forgotten a lot of the numbers. But I can tell you a few. In the US the Max Take Off Weight for the Otter is 12,500 lbs! Anything higher than that requires a type rating and performance data based on altitude and temperature. The aircraft is certified for a considerably higher MTOW in some other nations. As I recall the empty weight is around 6,500 lbs, allowing about 6,000 lbs for fuel and payload. Max fuel capacity is, as I recall, 2,200 lbs. I used to operate the aircraft in and out of Leadville, CO where the field elevation is right at 10,000 feet above sea level. No restrictions! Do not recall ever taking off there at the 12,500 lb MTOW. On summer days the density altitude at Leadville could exceed 14,000 feet. As I recall, Leadville is the highest elevation public use airport in the nation! I also recall the Otters we operated carried 19 passengers plus crew of two. Plane is certified for a single pilot, but few operators do that, especially in passenger configuration. Perhaps in all cargo! In spite of the high lift wing and fixed landing gear the cruise speed was about the same as the venerable DC-3!
Ron Fill more Sir thanks for your sharing valuable experience with me....
i work at viking :)
Arvind Korha Sir is Twin Otter 400 series aircraft available in pressurized version
So, did Viking ever get rid of that 4 year backlog?
I wonder that myself. It would be great if it all turned out as they forecast :-)
In 2014 production was 24 aircraft. 2015 production was reduced to 18 aircraft. 100th Twin Otter Series 400 produced in July 2017. Wikipedia
what happened to dehavilland canada?
Sucked up by Boeing...?
Bought by Boeing then sold to Canadair. Main production of the Dash 8 is still in Toronto.
