    As a newborn, my baby slept close to 24 hours so I thought something was wrong but now at 2 months, she is awake almost all day and sleeping at night. There is so much variability in babies.

    You're amazing. I have been watching few of your videos as a first time pregnant woman. When I first got the confirmation that I was pregnant not only was I extremely happy but very conscious on what to do that was best for my baby as I knew NOTHING about children. Never had any around. So I became a researcher of scientific studies, videos, psychology books, started listening to pediatricians and obgyns as best as I could... and your channel is giving me so much!!
    You're absolutely amazing, I'm learning a lot with you and can only and simply say thank you!!!

    I’ve been having a hard time distinguishing my babies cues. He was born classified as a premature baby because of his size. Because of this he’s had a hard time with telling me things. I feel so terrible because I have had such a hard time reading his cues. This was very informational!

    Just wanna throw out- new parent here of a 7 month old. If your baby is always fussy no matter what, get them checked for a milk allergy and SILENT REFLUX.
    The reflux will be like weird gurgles or they make pained faces for no reason, burps, spit ups, will have trouble sleeping.
    Also, some babies don’t give sleep signals no matter how much you’re watching

      @Darthmaulini 10 місяців тому +1

      Agree with reflux or milk intolerance - but just to add caveat, milk allergy will not present like that - allergies show up as hives, coughing, vomiting type symptoms within 1-2 hours of eating, every single time. Milk "allergy" is widely overdiagnosed especially by pediatricians and leads to long lasting mislabeled of allergies, anxiety, and unnecessary avoidance can lead to true life threatening reactions in reintroduction. Take it from an allergist! If you're not sure, definitely see an allergist

    Gosh this has been SO helpful! My 3 month old has been very fussy during nap times and he’s been giving overtired cues and I didn’t know it! He doesn’t give the obvious ones like yawning, so it’s always been hard for me to read him. I also recently stretched his wake window to 90 minutes from 75 minutes but maybe he’s not there yet. I stretched it because it didn’t seem tired enough at 75 minutes but maybe somewhere in between is his sweet spot. Your videos have been so incredibly helpful-the most helpful-thank you so much!

Now entering the 5th she gets chatty (or sounds like an angry cat, that's a fun one) the closer it gets to bedtime. Obviously, I also get the yawning, rubbing face and nose on me, but it's usually the "talking" that gives her away.

I have my secound baby now (5 weeks old) and he tells me basically alle the time when he needs to eliminate something. We do elimination communication and it really shortens his crying episodes. Have you ever hab contact with this method?

    Great video! Thanks for helping us in our parenting journey? Would you say the hunger cues you mentioned are for 4 month old and older babies too? Our now 4 month old has never given clear hunger cues, he stopped rooting after the 1st month and he is now going through the phase where he puts everything in his mouth so I am clueless as to when we actually needs to feed. I am currently going by the clock I.e. if he gets fussy and it’s been over 2 hours since the last feed I offer him the breast and see if he takes it but we can’t keep relying on the clock. I feel so clueless for not being able to read him

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  2 роки тому +5

      It is really hard to read little ones. But just know it generally does become easier in the months to come as they become a lot better at communicating.
      I will say that mouthing at this age is very normal as your little one now has the skills to hold a toy and to explore these toys they mouth the item (as they don't have the hand skills to manipulate the toys with just their hands). So mouthing at this age would not be a clear indicator of hunger.
      Generally at 4 months of age they can go longer than 2 hours between feeds. I would check in with your baby's doctor to see how often they recommend feeding your little one. If you haven't been told to feed your baby every 2 hours due to milk supply or weight gain you could try to gradually increase the time between the feeds. As maybe your little one might not be giving clear signals that he is hungry because he doesn't need to. Does that make sense?

The issue is that by the time I breastfeed he would have already started crying and so I may be getting to him a bit late?? How to cope with breastfeeding appropriately and not disturbing his sleep?? THANK YOU !!!

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  Рік тому +2

      Hi Lucia if your little one is asleep I recommend leaving him, as he will wake up when he is truely hungry. Newborns are extremely noisy sleepers and smack their lips, cry out, suck their hands etc when sleeping. This is because they spend a lot of time in REM sleep. So that might be what you are seeing, rather than hunger cues?

    I have a question about the hunger cues!!!! So my baby is 4.5 months now, and he puts his toys in his mouth all the time, and is starting to teeth. How do I differentiate between those and a hunger cue? Usually I just go off of him trying to root, if I know we’re getting to a feeding time in our day routine or if he cries/does a little yell at me like “hey mama I’m ready!”. Sadly I have seen the turns red a few times, and he has a very specific cry that goes with it, I call it the shake cry. We avoid that one.

    If a baby is overstimulated or has had enough, is it normal for them to turning their head left, right, left, right? And stick their tongue out over and over? And make their eyes really wide open? The wide open eyes freaks me out a bit because he seems a bit “not with it”, which really worries me. Is it just overstimulation? The wide open eyes happened again today but he was in a quiet place and shouldn’t be overstimulated.

    My 3.5 month daughter is teething. She's a very chill baby but now she starts screaming from 0 to 100% as soon as she opens her eyes after a nap. Normally, she'd start fussing first and gradually escalate. Today, I've noticed a top of her lower inscisor showing. One down, one to go 💪
    By the way, I love your videos and have learned many new things from you although this is my third baby. I especially loved your video on high chairs. We've been doing it so wrong with our first two kids 🤪

      Oh teething. It is also so distressing for bub and tiring for parents. Hopefully the second one comes through soon!
      Glad these videos are helpful. I am still learning stuff everyday as a parent too!!

      i’m not sure what that plant is exactly, but one of my favorites looks similar to it and it’s called string of pearls!

      It might be a plant called String of Bananas. Can't see it very well, though. String of Pearls is a succulent, but her cascading plant doesn't look like that.

    Do you have a similar video on slightly older babies?
    I found my baby stopped giving the clear hunger clues at about 3 months.
    Now he is not using the clear "Neh" cry and he is sucking on his hands so much (even just after food) which leaves me guessing and offering the breast all the time... ?

    So what happens if my 3 month old keeps arching her back or stiffens up constantly even after she’s fed, changed, played with, napped and all that? Lately, the last 4 to 5 days has been terrible with her. I have 3 girls and the older two was never like this last one who’s 3 month old. No matter how i try to change a hold, nurse, bottle feed, she’s flipping out like crazy even though I am sure of her cues. She don’t sleep well on her back either. So lost with this baby… 😭

    Hi Emma
    Great video thanks, i feel i am getting better at interpreting my baby boy's needs which obviously leads to both of us being far more content and less stressed! Im baffled as to why this stuff isnt taught in the antenatal classes (i didnt actually have any due to covid lol but was given plenty of leaflets on various things at the hospital).
    Could you do a video on tortocollis please? X

    Would anyone have an advice for baby thst would sleep even 4hrs without waking up to eat so when I wake her she is already really hungry and I dont even get a chance to read the cues. I know I could wake her up earlier but mostly she wakes up fussy anyways, she is 3 weeks now...

      Hi Elizabeth it can be really confusing! If you have recently fed your little one and she has been awake for 45 - 120 minutes I would say putting her hands in her mouth is indicating she is tired. Babies at this age generally only stay awake for 45 - 120minutes between naps. Hope that helps!

    Hi Emma, thank you for your helpful video
    Sorry, this might be out of text but I really need some help with my 9 months son.
    He started solid at 6 months age, but always shut his mouth whenever I tried to put purree or porridge. The only thing he will open his mouth is when I give him water. Whenever I put him into highchair, it will only last 5 minutes and after that he will cry and make loud sound. So, My mom in law told me to put him into baby walker and give him food when he is walk around, but I realize it isn’t help at all and even make him more rejecting his food. Please help 😣🙏🏻
    Thank you

      Hi @Roselin Salyo sounds like a challenging few months. I would agree that using a baby walker for eating isn’t going to help your little one. To safely explore food and focus on the skill of eating it is recommended they sit in a supportive high chair. In this video I discuss how to make sure your high chair is fitting/giving them the support they need. ua-cam.com/video/ewM5oQaxcZM/v-deo.html. It might be helpful.
      I also have a video on how to make mealtimes easier which might help. The key is to take the pressure off eating and let your little one touch and explore the food. It would be best if you also played with the food and ate the food with your mouth open to show your little one what he is to do with the food once it is in his mouth.
      It might be helpful to see a speech pathologist who specialises in mealtimes as they would be able to see him and give more specific advice.

      A walker is not safe and these have been banned by the American Academy of Pediatrics for causing many injuries to babies due to how fast they can go in them. Alongside this, walkers CAN in some babies, delay walking due to the fact they mainly work on development of the Achilles heel and calf muscles instead of the hips and thigh muscles that we really really need to learn how to walk
      Hope this is kinda helpful !

    Hi my baby cries to go to sleep, she gets sleep but does not fall asleep immediately and she cries alot for that. I need to nurse her until she falls asleep and this is the only way to stop her crying. After she fells asleep (she takes time to fall asleep) she sleeps on chest mostly, she wakes up immediately when she was placed on her sleep lounge. Is this normal. Also how do i know my baby is crying due to gas

    We thought my first son went from colic to being unusually calm. Starting at about 3 months, we could take him to any noisy environment and he would go instantly asleep. Now I know he is autistic. I think he was overwhelmed and zoning out.
