Bro I always mess up my trailers! That tip for it being at the bend and then looking straight across to the bait to see where the hook comes out is a game changer!!
I've had a lot of good luck on wacky rigs. I use size 2/0 hooks and senko worms. I've tried dark red and dark blue colors so far and both work well. I cast, wait several seconds then reel slowly until my line has tension, then raise my rod tip to lift the worm up in the water, then let it fall again. Repeat until I've fully retrieved. Sometimes instead of raising my rod tip in one motion, I'll twitch it and shake it, then pause for a few seconds. Sometimes the twitching gets the fish to notice the bait and they'll bite it right when you pause. On my best day, I've caught a dozen bass in just a couple of hours. It was during a long, cool day of continuous rain so the fish were active, but it still shows that the rig works.
Nice that you finally got him.
