I’ve lived in St. Augustine my entire life. Grew up on the island (my mom still has the house I was raised in) now live in the Davis Shores. 3 things I disagree with you on. 1. The flooding is a HUGE issue for St. Augustine. 2. WGV and nocatee are not st. Augustine. That’s basically Jacksonville. 3. Harry’s is gross. My wife worked there when we were dating/ in college.
It's definitely a huge issue for people living on the island and Intracoastal. They have several flood mitigation projects for the future. We will see what happens. I personally feel like the real st augustine is 32080, 32084, and 32086. Though according to the county and USPS they are in St Augustine. I imagine management has changed because it's one of the best restaurants in town. Yes that's me saying that, but almost every weekend there is a line out the door. Gotta be doing something right.
Thanks so much for a candid discussion about some negatives in the area. Don't hear that too often from realtors. That being said, all in all, not enough negative stuff to discourage me from investing. Just good to hear the good and the bad in order to make an informed decision.
Saint augustine is an awesome place to live I can't wait to move back there again. I use to live in the outskirts of town and I feel that is the best way to do it.
My family lineage here goes back at least to the 1800’s. We’ve seen change like electricity and bathrooms inside the house! “You don’t have to change, survival isn’t mandatory.” And also, not all change is necessary.. 😂
I used to love going downtown but for the past few years I've avoided that place like the plague. It's just not worth the headache to me anymore, especially during nights of lights.
Yup - I've only been here for five years - and I LOVE it...but in just five years "everything" has become a hassle; having to wait for a table, traffic has gotten CRAZY, no parking downtown.... I'm glad that I at least had a year or two without all the problems I listed above. I don't go downtown like I used to - but I still believe I live in one of the most beautiful areas in the States.
@@cecileroy557 I am sure you can imagine how we feel. It was such a cool place. You literally couldn't go anywhere without seeing 4 or 5 people you knew, everybody was friendly and familiar. Back in the mid '80s this was the best kept secret and life was affordable and so very laid back. Downtown was a blast for those of us in the service industry! The population has more than quadrupled 😢
@@robinfrady5257 I can only imagine... I'm 72 & have a female friend, from St. Augustine, around the same age. She remembers when St. George Street had actual businesses such as a hardware store -- and you could just park out front... It's really sad. Places like Key West, Asheville, Tennessee - not to mention Venice in Italy - have all become crowded tourists traps where "reg. people" can't afford to live anymore. Just like here - who wants to be a waiter etc. if you're forced to live a half hour, or more, away?
@@cecileroy557 Right? Why would you price your tourist industry/bartender/server/hotel attendants etc right out of the job market by shooting rent so sky high in literally 18 months? The same thing happened to Cedar Key and seeing those places so beloved go down😭. It is a literal rape🤬
@@cecileroy557 I know. We are feeling it. Out where we live was once wonderfully "outskirts". They are literally clear cutting all along what SHOULD BE Old King Trail. That part of history has been annihilated. This wonderful ecological delight is truly being murdered.

Isn't it funny? You don't know what you got til it's gone. I moved from NYC and always missed the city when I moved here. Then I moved away and realized what I was missing!
There are tons of options close by. Just depends on what you are looking for. My friends mom was the president of that location for a long time. I'd look into Palencia, Madeira, and Cordova Palms. I live here, most places in Florida have Tourists, and development is happening on the outskirts, not directly in the heart of St. Augustine. There are way more positives than negatives! You can get 5 negatives on literally any city in Florida, or actually in America! This is YOUR Opinion, and you know EVERYONE has one!
Hey Don! Thanks for commenting. I agree with you. It was actually difficult for me to name 5 things. Though part of what I'm doing is showing all the positives and negatives. I have a ton of videos that talk about how great it is!
I have been living in the miami area basically my entire life. I’m looking at buying a house up in St Augustine and Jacksonville area. Some people tell me that sometimes Jacksonville start to ice and have snow. Is it the same for St Augustine?
Thanks for the question. Definitely no snow. I think it happend once in 100 years. We do get icing here and there on the grass over night. Temps can get colder at night under 50. Days are normally around 70. I have a video on the weather on my channel!
Thanks for the information. I am moving to St Augustine in June. Look forward to the continued madness. I'm coming from NY as well. I'll take stock in sunscreen please.
My husband and I are recent empty nesters and my husbands job is transferring him to Northern Florida. We can pick where we want to live in Northern Florida. He is a huge golfer and we have a small dog. Relocating by October. I have no clue where to start.
We've visited several times. Historic obviously, and nice to visit probably once. The town is a bit of a clip joint for tourists though. The only place I have ever seen that has parking meters that don't allow "piggybacking". IOW, if a car parks and pays for say two hours, but leaves after ten minutes, their system is set up to make the next car pay for the time also, starting at the time they parked. This is, in effect, double/triple/or more, charging for the same time, same space. A complete ripoff of visitors. Also amusing are their trollies. The seats specifically. They are hard metal, which is okay, but the shape of the back is, I believe, deliberately designed to be very uncomfortable, so the rider doesn't just sit there and ride around town, but is compelled by those damn seats to get up occasionally and visit the stops the trolley makes, and SPEND MONEY. These seat backs are curved so that the top of the metal back rams into your back. I guess if a person had a bad, natural slump, they might be okay, but for most people, you don't want to sit there very long. Clever, but sleazy trick I think.
Anastasia Island or towards Jacksonville is a better option as far as buying a home. Still expensive but no where near what St. Augustine costs. Ridiculousness. The Scoot Coups are awesome.
It depends on your situation. Also depends on what better means. 🤔 If better means it's going to cost less than yes. But a lot more goes into someone's decision than just costs. Not saying it doesn't play a big factor
Anastasia island is St. Augustine… I live inside the “city of st. Augustine” tax area, while also living on Anastasia Island. The home prices are at a premium here.
Been here since 2000 love st Augustine but yeah traffic is beginning to suck and if one is going to invite those to move here built more multi complex not storage units
agree traffic is getting worse especially in just the past 5 years with more people moving to Fl and the city commissioners wont expand the roads but they will build more houses and the city was designed on a 15th century foundation that is struggling to accommodate 21st century traffic.
@@waverider227 it's definitely worse than it was. Though I would say traffic (outside of night of lights) is pretty normal for a town our size. Problem is they can't build anymore roads in downtown. It's pretty much maxed out

Recently moved temporarily to Palatka from NC due to health. My wife and I were very excited to spend our 36th wedding anniversary in St. Augustine last weekend with a great meal at Harry's. I am in a wheelchair with my service dog and we could barely fit between the drugged out homeless people laying on the sidewalks. No more artists or street performers, but sure it's OK to have vagrants literally blocking sidewalks in front of shops and restaurants. Not how we remembered this place from our youth and won't be moving there as originally planned. This is bad local government officials who want this beautiful town to become a carbon copy of the liberal cities they fled from ! No thanks, we'll stay in Palatka 🇺🇸
I've said this many times. Palatka feels like St Augustine did 20 years ago. My sister just closed on a house on the river last week. I put my first best friend in a home last year. I think Palatka is 📈📈📈 If you need any help buying out there I'd love to help. We have a Palatka video coming soon!
Wow is it really that bad in Saint Augustine these days? I couldn’t imagine it. Super sad. I love palatka. I’m originally from green cove springs and I’m glad y’all enjoy that area. Sorry ST Augustine isn’t what it once was. Hopefully that changes. Hope y’all have a better time in Palatka.
@@richardfloridaman it honestly depends. These last few months are peak tourism season. So if you are pan handling that is a Hotspot. I just went down there last week and barely noticed any
I think we are growing at a good speed. Could it be done better, Yes, but I think no one could have predicted the explosive growth over the past 2 years
How true its like the city commissioners see only quick money and no solutions to the overcrowding problem. Lets build more subdivision but not improve the roads to handle the massive traffic.
There’s no justification for the cost of living in Saint Augustine when you could live closer to Disney or Seaworld or Busch Gardens. There’s nothing to do there. Yeah it’s pretty but it’s just too expensive to live there.
I think it is just a different style of living than what you want. I don't know one person that is from FL that would say Orlando is a better place to live 🤔 🤷.
You missed flooding That is a real bummer all around. Gentrification has been massive. Pay. Pay in my field lags horribly as do most service jobs. FSDB is the worse. set the bar super low there Medical access is hard. The population growth has stressed the medical community. I think that is everywhere, but here, it takes months to get appointments with doctors, dentists, etc. We need more activities and enrichment for youth 12-18 it's sorely lacking. We have the Boys and Girls club........Donate, please. they need expansion and more options.

"AFFORDABLE HOUSING" Is NOT the correct nomenclature Locals want to hear from their political leaders and civic authority. AFFORDABLE HOUSING is relative to the average. If you are saying 480,000 dollars is Avg . They could establish AFFORDABLE as 350,000 dollars. And worse if they build a development they usually have a HOUSING Authority or commission To govern manage over the new housing. The new inhabitants will be charged mandatory monthly maintenance fees. On top of whatever their mortgage will be. So they will initially claim to want to sell the entry level or smaller units, basically a new mobile home size unit for 180,000 dollars ""Starting Prices." Then set monthly maintenance fees "STARTING" at around only 800 dollars. This is a low ball number to secure their zoning from the public Shortly after construction begins Those maintenance fees and starting prices will start to go up. So it appears your Rent / mortgage would be 2200 2500 dollars By the time units are all completed this number would likely be 3500. This is NOT considered AFFORDABLE HOUSING to most local working class people. This is only AFFORDABLE HOUSING to profit Real estate entities and political figures. Who then proceed to Fleece their own people. The correct nomenclature would be LOWER INCOME. I lived in Grand Lake CO and that is what happened there. There are no more families there No more kids. Schools will close !! Neighborhoods gone !!! Churches foreclose their flocks dissolved!!!! It's like a Living Cemetery. If you work there , You can't afford to live there Then business hire illegal workers and abuse them Or hire Temporary J12s Who are mostly young European students who pay to come work basically as slaves. Of which contribute almost nothing to the local economy and proceed to take any money they earned back to their home country in Europe. This is not Good !!!! If you are in the real estate business and contributing to this you are treasonous to your home and your children and families will be left with NO COMMUNITY !
Not sure where you get your information from but St Johns county schools are rated #1 in Florida, google it! they have been #1 for 10 years running!
In my greedy realtor opinion (haha) the pros far outweigh the cons! No place is perfect. Thank you for recognizing that!
Saint augustine is an awesome place to live I can't wait to move back there again. I use to live in the outskirts of town and I feel that is the best way to do it.
@@chopperguy4711 I agree. It's similar to every major city. You don't go downtown all the time. Though when you do you want it to be convenient
Nice.Thank you so much. I haven't lived here since 2006 and have no plans on coming back although I do miss my people..
What made you move away?
My family lineage here goes back at least to the 1800’s. We’ve seen change like electricity and bathrooms inside the house! “You don’t have to change, survival isn’t mandatory.” And also, not all change is necessary.. 😂
That's pretty amazing that you can trace it back then. It definitely has changed. Some for the better some for worse

St Augustine Beach, Flagler Beach,
Though it really depends on what type of rental you are looking for and price point.
Might be taking a gig with Northrop Grumman, any recommendations on housing areas ? Coming from Arizona by the way.
There are tons of options close by. Just depends on what you are looking for. My friends mom was the president of that location for a long time.

Very possible. Though I have ridden them and barely noticed what you pointed out.

Anastasia Island or towards Jacksonville is a better option as far as buying a home. Still expensive but no where near what St. Augustine costs. Ridiculousness. The Scoot Coups are awesome.
It depends on your situation. Also depends on what better means. 🤔
If better means it's going to cost less than yes.
Its very frustrating. Why can't we have more condos instead of luxury rentals? We need the storage units too! People have a lot of junk!
agree traffic is getting worse especially in just the past 5 years with more people moving to Fl and the city commissioners wont expand the roads but they will build more houses and the city was designed on a 15th century foundation that is struggling to accommodate 21st century traffic.
@@waverider227 it's definitely worse than it was. Though I would say traffic (outside of night of lights) is pretty normal for a town our size.

I think Palatka is 📈📈📈

I think we are growing at a good speed. Could it be done better, Yes, but I think no one could have predicted the explosive growth over the past 2 years
I’m from Miami. The same thing happened in Kendall Lakes. Such poor planning.

"AFFORDABLE HOUSING"
Is NOT the correct nomenclature Locals want to hear from their political leaders and civic authority.
AFFORDABLE HOUSING is relative to the average.
If you are saying 480,000 dollars is Avg . They could establish AFFORDABLE as 350,000 dollars.
And worse if they build a development they usually have a HOUSING Authority or commission
To govern manage over the new housing.
The new inhabitants will be charged mandatory monthly maintenance fees.
On top of whatever their mortgage will be.
So they will initially claim to want to sell the entry level or smaller units, basically a new mobile home size unit for 180,000 dollars ""Starting Prices."
Then set monthly maintenance fees "STARTING" at around only 800 dollars.
This is a low ball number to secure their zoning from the public
Shortly after construction begins
Those maintenance fees and starting prices will start to go up.
So it appears your Rent / mortgage would be 2200 2500 dollars
By the time units are all completed this number would likely be 3500.
There are no more families there
No more kids.
Schools will close !!
Neighborhoods gone !!!
Churches foreclose their flocks dissolved!!!!
It's like a Living Cemetery.
If you work there ,
You can't afford to live there
Then business hire illegal workers and abuse them
Or hire Temporary J12s
Who are mostly young European students who pay to come work basically as slaves.
Of which contribute almost nothing to the local economy and proceed to take any money they earned back to their home country in Europe.
This is not Good !!!!
If you are in the real estate business and contributing to this you are treasonous to your home and your children and families will be left with NO COMMUNITY !
Its definitely a challenge we are facing as prices have changed rapidly here. We need both affordable and low income housing.
Epic poetry!
All truth!
Not sure where you get your information from but St Johns county schools are rated #1 in Florida, google it! they have been #1 for 10 years running!
