It Comes At Night | Scarier Than Ghosts

  • It Comes At Night is one of the most impressively daunting films I've ever watched, and it's not because the film is packed with horrifying images or actions (though it had its fair share); it's because of the camera, and its secret movements.
If you didn't find this film scary at all, or were disappointed by its lack of action, I hope this video will help you appreciate it at least a little bit more than before. Yes, it has its flow, and yes, it may be relying too much on the techniques and come across as a slow film with little narrative value. But if you go in without any preconception, and really invest yourself into the world it presents, I guarantee its methods will work better and at least put you on the edge of your seat for awhile.
If you can, why not get the best out of its intended optimal viewing experience?
    Enjoy.

You nailed all the fantastic visual aspects of this. Honestly, it's the only interesting thing about this film: the technical artistry at hand. More recently, The Humans... so much of its camerawork recalls Polanski and Kubrick that it, too, can be summed up as style over substance.

I remember liking it... or rather I remember not agreeing with the generally negative reception that it got from people within my circle. I can like a film based solely on atmosphere, but my friends were mostly bored or frustrated. Watching this video, I can say it didn't really stick with me. I don't remember hardly anything from the bits that were shown. I never watch trailers if I can avoid them.

I’m so glad I knew nothing about this movie going into it. Apparently people were really disappointed because the trailer painted it is as a completely different move than it actually was. To me, it was one of the most dread-inducing films I saw last year. I’m definitely due for a rewatch.

It's a really well made but ultimately hollow horror, especially for A24. The points it makes here and there are glaringly obvious to the viewer, sometimes contradictory, and more so for the intended "elevated horror" audience. It's the kind of film you leave with positive feelings until you realize that aside from people dying here and there, nothing actually happens at all. There's a thin line between leaving plot points open for interpretation and not actually making anything that resembles a narrative and It Comes at Night is dangerously close to the latter.

While Dawn of the Dead and The Walking Dead depict how we always romanticize zombie/plague apocalypse scenarios unfolding; this movie, for me at least, is how one would probably go. If you were someone that survived, you probably won't have much info about the state of the world and you're surviving on your paranoia alone. There are no heroes, no rebuilding civilization, just you and your ever-shrinking familial circle and the danger right outside your borders.

      Could you cite some?

    • @IzzyMarrie
      @IzzyMarrie Рік тому +1

@@Vinilalari Not the original commenter, but I could offer up a select few from across the world.
      1) Mad God is a stop motion horror with pretty much no dialogue which is an unsettling watch. It's more of an experience than anything, surreal, disturbing, but an overall experience worth having at least once. Essentially, a mysterious character descends into madness possibly searching for something. It's also the most recent on my list.
      2) There's Fantastic Planet, which I wouldn't consider horror, but it's another surreal experience with an uncomfortable feel to it I'd argue being better than Mad God (at least, depending on your tastes). It's a coproduction between a French and Czechoslovakian company. It's essentially about these big blue aliens who keep humans as pets.
      3) In 1986, Czechoslovakian film The Pied Piper was released. Something I'd forgotten until looking it up again just now is that they used an entirely fictitious language throughout the film (nothing relevant to your question, just thought it was interesting). It's stop motion and closer to the original tone of the Pied Piper. Sidenote, but another great spin on that tale is the 2015 Korean film The Piper (although that one is not animated).
      4) Speaking of Korea, if you want something less surreal but more visceral, I'd recommend The King of Pigs, an animated film from South Korea (also known as a hanguk aeni). Basically follows these boys who are bullied and end up committing violent acts. It's got instances of being pushed to self-harm, as a warning.
      5) Where the Wind Blows is one from Britain, and it's a chilling movie which will haunt you. It follows an elderly couple after a nuclear blast.
      6) From Japan, there's a few anime movies of varying quality. Sometimes you find that the manga (Japanese comic) is better, but sometimes not. Not to mention, but not every anime is based on a manga. I decided to include two movies in this one. I liked King of Thorn for some high intensity (certain people are frozen to avoid deadly disease, wake early, chaos ensues). Then you have Perfect Blue, which is a psychological thriller that follows an ex-idol trying to make it as an actor. She's stalked and also has her sanity warped.
(There's actually PLENTY I could recommend for anime movies-even more for series, but I'll cheat a little by just name dropping a few more movies: Asura, Barefoot Gen, and Grave of Fireflies... first taking place during a famine, and the other two during war)
      7) And finally, there's the original Watership Down and Plague Dogs, western cartoon movies that feature animal protagonists. Both feature graphic violence and strong plots centering around survival. These two I see included in plenty of "most disturbing cartoon" lists, and for good reason.

I’ve had numerous people denigrate this movie to me because it isn’t a real “horror movie”. But as stated in the video, fear is the feeling there is danger around the corner. This movie is distilled fear.

I've been interested in seeing this. I love horror and movies that terrify me, but I can't handle gore. People dying and blood is fine, things like losing body parts or physical torture usually not. Can anyone tell me what level you'd consider this movie, without spoilers? Thanks.

This movie is really good and i was annoyed by all the negative reviews by people bc they were expecting monsters. This film is similar to ‘28 days later’. In both films yes there are monsters, but the real monsters are the humans. It’s about exploring how humans behave when civil society breaks down and survival is the only thing that matters. How hard it is to trust other people and doing the right thing can feel so wrong bc everyone is a threat to your own survival. Though I get that the title is misleading and baited people into thinking it’s a creature feature.

i find it terrifying how i have already watched this movies 4 times over the last years and i have always forgotten about it. when i search for it, it tells me i already searched it and have already watched and also reviewed it.
and i always do the same: i never look for the plot, i just go ahead and watch it again. and i always come back from it traumatized and deeply sadned.

Frankly, if Paul had just turned away Will and his family in the beginning, they'd have been fine. I know that people argue that the grandfather may have already infected them from the beginning, but I don't think so. I think Andrew was the one who infected everybody, and Will/Kim knew it.

Seems the marketing didn't promote it as a thinking film.
I'm not one of these people who thinks everyone is dumb (quite the opposite sometimes). But if you don't tell people they have to think, they won't. And so people judged the movie or watched it incorrectly.

It's a tragedy about fear and paranoia, and how it compels the characters to do everything in order to survive. Yet, what is the point in surviving if your only reason for living is gone, and all that remains is the same fear and paranoia? It was okay for what it was, but I still did not like the bait and switch that got my butt in that seat.

This film in my opinion is excellent, however the "flaws" would be the very fact that it was unsettling and had a sense of dread but did not allow the audience a proper reasoning for what events followed. It is also a film that makes humans THE MONSTERS; their paranoia and desperation turn the into ones, the plaque is never explained ... The door remains a mystery. We never quite understand the It of It Comes At Night-even in The Wailing, Hereditary, Midsommar, The Shining, and the Tale of Two Sisters answer their IT whether the MONSTER IS HUMAN OR ACTUALLY SUPERNATURAL.
The IT isn't as satisfying when it's just "The It was the circumstances not the plaque, not the door; it doesn't even please when we do get certain answers: Travis being infected with the plaque but Kim and Will getting killed because of suspicion. As a fan of mediums such as books, graphic novels, a TV series, and films; I personally have always been rubbed wrong by open endings. There is no resolution, the opening of this film was Medias Res but didn't seem to want to explain why what was happening happened; open to interpretation is only satisfying when rules have been established.
A slow burn with no buildup is what it is seen as, although in reality the climax is unsatisfactory because of the lack of "buildup"; the plaque was "meaninglessness" just a plot device for a character study: to the average viewer that is seen as anticlimactic ... Oh the HORROR.

Come on really? You can have the best painting technique and tools but if you are painting a trash can the canvas is still trash. This movie is excellently filmed, if only they had used those talents to film an actual plot that is worth the audience attention then it wouldn't be so bad.

The film was poorly marketed as a different film, hence why when people went to see it expecting a blumhouse film they were disappointed.
