Nice video. Although i don't enjoy the Starbucks line for quite a few reasons, I do enjoy your videos for their level of sophiscation and how informative they are. Thank you Ipon70!
In my review of the Starbucks Vertuo, this was my favorite of all the coffee capsules. Definitely taste the best of the single origins and can drink just as is black. For me this one is a buy and more comparable to Nespresso.
Thanks for another quality video. I’ve been looking forward to your views on Sumatra from Starbucks, I was hopeful it would be like Nespresso’s version but more on the chocolate side instead of their tobacco variantI received. Certainly looking forward to Starbucks Vertuo making it to the U.K. one day. 🇬🇧
Yeah, Sumatra has this kind of taste. They have crazy monsoon seasons in the Sumatra/Indonesia region which creates these kind of flavors in their coffees. Monsoon Malabar coffee is another one that has a similar taste but those are grown and aged in India, not sure if nespresso offers one. That earthy taste is kind of like wood... or maybe... leaves, or more to the point, tobacco leaves that have not been dried out. At least that's what I taste in various Sumatras. And as a former smoker, I can handle it. And yes, sometimes it will taste like soil too. For a coffee, I think it's great, but I wouldn't want anything else to taste like this. lol... For example, I would not want a steak to taste like dirt/leaves/wood but a coffee, HELL YEAH!! I'll drink it... Starbucks Sumatra is a very good coffee but I do think there are some better Sumatras out there. Look around, you will find some great ones.
I believe that anything grown in the dirt, potatoes, mushrooms, peanuts, carrots, ok maybe not the carrots, has an earthy flavor. That aroma from a fresh bag of potatoes or peanuts. When you drive through the country and all the newly plowed farm smells. You keep mentioning a smoky flavor, smoked paprika comes to mind.. I add cumin to some foods and that is sometimes an earthy flavor also.
Great review. I picked Sumatra up at my local Target and have been enjoying it all week long. I'm not a Starbucks drinker so I was pleasantly surprised! Thanks again!!
I was debating about trying this because of the “earthy & herbal notes.” After your review, I will definitely be trying it, especially because you said it’s not Starbuck’s typical burnt taste. I live in the Midwest and I’m over the cold/snowy weather 😏 I’m looking forward to enjoying iced coffee in warmer weather.
BTW this is where I grew up though we moved back to the US when I was about 3 so I don’t remember South East Asia. I usually hate Sumatra coffee. It tastes like an ashtray to me. I feel like I can always tell it from a mile away.
I have a Next too and other than not being able to connect to Wi-Fi it hasn't had any problems. I half way expect something to go wrong every time I use it. I saw all the negative reviews after I purchased it. At least it does seem that Nespresso customer service will take care of it when it does fail. I really don't think the manufacturer makes a difference. I bought mine directly from Nespresso and we couldn't find an actual manufacturer name anywhere. Mine said it was made in Hungary.
Really nice review! I actually really enjoyed this and am surprised a "Starbucks" branded coffee isn't funky-burnt tasting. I'm like you... don't care much for it. The Vertuo Next machine... not a fan... it comes across as big bulb-anis with a propeller beanie on top and quite frankly... not one of their more attractive machines. I like your Vertuo plus much better and would be the machine I'd own if I didn't have my current one (Vertuo by Breville). Thanks again for a great review. One quick question... why did you cut the stirring/spoon part out of the videos? They didn't take much time... I rather enjoyed it.
Thank you for the nice comments that means a lot. I cut it out because most people fast forward through it. Same reason I moved all the announcements to the end. If you just came for coffee it’s faster now, shorter videos and quicker cuts. If you want the rest, contest, ongoing stuff, it’s at the end. Good question. Thank you.
Concerning your criticism of the vertuo next machine, does it matter which brand it is? After two months I'm still very happy with my Delonghi ENV120. Makes good coffee, is silent, paired to my phone within seconds. So, no regrets...🍵
I constantly have issues with my virtuo next machine as well. I try to call Nespresso every time it happens so they are aware of how frequently I have to deal with it. They gave me a free sleeve of coffee for my time but it’s always the same, they always tell me to unplug the machine and run an old capsule through. I also hate how loud it is. I usually just brew my pour over capsules in my older machine with barcodes from an xl capsule. It comes out fine if not better.

As others have said you are the best Nespresso reviewer
So awesome to hear. It truly makes my day, thank you.
Sumatra near Borneo , i love nespresso
Thank you for putting announcements at the end of the video.
Love your summary on Podgate, thank you. 👏

Good to hear it's a good cup of coffee. I just ordered some and will get it this week. I'm excited to try it!
This one sounds good. I think I’ll try it. 👍🏽 Glad you’re back to 10am EST!! The earlier time was waaaay too early for me!
Yeah I think I am going to stick with 8am Phoenix time. It was pretty good!
I would love another decaf option. Starbucks decaf would be awesome!

My favorite of the Starbucks coffee available at Target.

Great review, as always, one of my favorite Starbucks pods.

So welcome and thank you for the comment.

Ditto! All.of the above. I'm actually excited for it!
Awesome to hear post back what you think.
I'll definitely have to give this iced one a try.
Thanks for another great review!
Your welcome and yes iced was very good
My next machine was rubbish. Everyday, it had new issues.

Yes!! Tastes like an ashtray. I haven't tried these vertuo pods but probably won't due to past experience with sumatra

The rounded top units are Breville and the flat top units are Delonghi, at least that is the case for the Vertuo Plus. Not sure who makes the Next.

I like the canister set behind you. Are they air tight?
They are not, so we don’t store anything super important in there. Lol
Done

Yeah the machine is not reliable and was not ready for prime time. It needed another 6 months to a year to bake.
Intenso is one of your favorites, do you ever add flavoring? Or is black your preferred with it?
Usually a little cream milk mixture.
I hope Nespresso can do something for the Next owners to renew their faith in the brand... This machine is trouble.
What is your favorite Starbucks pod?
So far the Sumatra.
