The Hunters Campaign / Playthrough - GMT Games - Wargame - U-boat Solitaire Patrol 13

- We go on our thirteenth patrol in this solitaire playthrough of the Hunters (GMT Games, Consim Press) WW2 (World War 2) solitaire game (wargame historical game war game board game), a U-boat simulation board game. Patrol 13
Known Errors
1 - When taking hits from depth charging, I did not add +1 to the die roll for the fuel tank damage for two attacks. This would have resulted in one more hit on the U-Boat.

What an awesome series and game. I loved it. Thank you. I wish this game had been adapted to PC to handle all the housekeeping, speed things along, and prevent user error. I don't own a single board game as I'm an old computer gamer who started gaming on a TI-99/4A in the 1980s. Still, I must play this. I placed my 4th printing P500 order last night. Thanks again for the series.
Very good series. Contagious enthusiasm and nice way of filming and sounding it.
Keep on the good work.
Thanks very much, I'm glad that you enjoyed it. :)
I should have waited to the end to comment. I'm sorry for the result but you had a fine career for sure. From what I have read, the continual depth charge cycle happened in real life sometimes. I guess that's why some have called the U-Boats "iron coffins". This game reminds me of the rather morbid phrase "death by a thousand cuts" because the U-boat can keep going while suffering damage after damage until suddenly a catastrophic event happens (It's happened to me several times!). Thanks for keeping it up all the way! I'm going to go back and watch some other videos because I didn't know that this would be the last mission.
Yes, I was reading how sometimes the depth charge cycles would go on for hours and hours and hours. I can't imagine what it would have been like. I'm glad we made it as far as we did, it was a fun series to play and make. :)
@@ZillaBlitz Have you ever read "Iron Coffins"? The author's accounts of depth charging accounts make for some incredible reading.
I haven't, no. But I've just added it to my wishlist, thanks! Someone else had mentioned the two books by Clay Blair. Which look really good as well. :)
Excellent series. Can’t wait to pick up the game. Off to binge watch Silent Victory now.
Thanks, Jon! Hopefully it gets back in print sooner than later! :)
Superbly entertaining series! Once you’d accumulated like 6 hull damage results, it was clear that either the vessel was going down, or you’d be in drydock until well past the end of the war!🙂
Yeah, we just couldn't get out of the grip, by the end we really needed a miracle that never came. I'm happy you enjoyed the series. I definitely want to come back to some submarine adventures this year again.
@@ZillaBlitz I’ll look forward to it!
Have you ever reviewed any products from PLAAY games? Second Season football is a great game - one of my faves.
I've not heard of it before this, actually. Just took a look, it definitely looks interesting, thanks!
Stumbled across your channel when looking for videos on The Hunters, which I just bought. Haven't played it yet myself, but I've watched this entire series and man, what a riveting story! I feel like I became really engaged in the fate of your little sub and this one was spectacular. It's not often you feel moved by youtube videos about board games. Well done, sir! Subscribed to your channel :) Keep up the good work!
Thanks, Karl! I'm glad you you enjoyed it and thanks for the kind words. This was great fun to make, and I'm hopeful to create another submarine series starting this fall. And thanks for subbing, I hope you continue to find stuff you like here. :)
You forgot to use your re-roll for your Luck. You can re-roll any roll. Either a torpedo attack or detection. You have 2 in the bank. On the initial detection I would have used one. Good gamethrough. Enjoyed it a lot.
Actually, I remember being aware of those and intentionally not using them. I don't recall the reason. Whatever the reason was it wasn't a good reason, in retrospect. ;)
For reference, I always save my health potions in RPGs.
@@ZillaBlitzyes Mike I was hoping U use the re roll 4 the unlucky boxcar rolls,,,, but hey I know nothing. ,,,, excellent story 🐋🤺
Thank you for these excellent videos. My father served as a submariner for the Royal Navy in the Second World War so these are of historic significance to me. However it is the sheer excitement you bring to these games. I’ve binge watched all of this series as well as the US and Italian submarine series whilst I am off work suffering with acute anxiety issues.
I really want to get this game in particular. Sadly availability in the UK is an issue but I’ll keep looking.
Thank you for your excellent work.
Thanks for the kind words. I've been really hoping to come back and make more series like these, they were great fun to make. I'm glad you're enjoying them. :)
And I hope you can feel better. I can totally relate to anxiety, and know how much of a climb that can be. Keep at it.
Whew...made it through the whole series....fantastic job brother. Great editing and narration. I just wish you had used your lucky charm to reroll the 1st detection, when you needed a 7.....I had a feeling you might get caught in the downward detection spiral...as I have experienced that a number of times....I have thrown dice...begged....had a tantrum, but eventually you just can't get out of it. When you didnt use the lucky charm, I was like...Noooooooooooooooooooooo...... LOL..... Thanks dude....great vid.
Yeah, in retrospect it probably would have been good to use the lucky charm, but I felt like we'd get out without needing to use it. How wrong I was! It was a fun run while it lasted, though. Thanks for the kind words, too, I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
👍
Great series. Loved the ending. Very dramatic.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I really want to get back to creating another series like this. Hopefully in the fall. :)
It was a very good run, it was a noble end taking on a Capital ship
Thanks! Bit of a run of bad luck there at the end. But the odds always catch up with in the end. :)

So dramatic! What a tragic end too. The ending scene was handled brilliantly and with respect, quite haunting, I got a tingle running up my spine!
Thanks for such a fantastic video series, the best Hunters campaign I've seen played on UA-cam.
Thanks, Film! I wanted to try something different for the ending but wasn't sure how that might come across. I'm glad to hear that you "liked" it. (Not sure what the right word might be.) And thanks for the kind words. This was really fun to make, more episodes than I imagined, but enjoyable to play and make all the way. Now on to the next thing!
Great series! Thanks for taking us along for the game
Thanks, and I'm happy you liked it! :)
I just binge-watched this whole series, and I say THANK YOU for this incredible story!
Thanks very much! I'm happy you liked it. :)
I know I pointed out you didn't need to use the + modifier for year unless you were close range, but actually I didn't see a detection die roll that would've meant you weren't detected, even by giving you the +2 back...you were legit detected each time.
I love the fact that the modifiers mount up as you take certain damage - it's very realistic.
I've had this game on my shelf since Sept 2020 (so 2 years) and this series of videos made me get it to the table - so thank you very much. I just finished a Sept '40 to Jun '43 in a IXB and came away with 250,000 tons - a few capital ships and several convoys. I had very few aircraft encounters but I did have lots of duds. I had two instances where my boat was critical for hull damage but managed to run off.
I'm sure I made lots of mistakes - but I'm going in again. I think I will also use the Evasive Manoeuvres optional rule too
Thanks again.
Oh, that's for checking on this episode. I distinctly remember feeling like we never came even close to escaping detection, and it's good to know that my rules error didn't impact the outcome! Thanks so much for doing that!
And congrats on a successful campaign! Most excellent work! I do think I'd explore adding in some optional rules in an subsequent playthrough. The mistake on the +1 DRMs for the years makes me think that we'd have a better chance of making it through a campaign. I was dreading 1943.
Thanks again!
@@ZillaBlitz no problem. Yeah you just couldn't break contact and damage was making it worse.
You had a good run. I especially liked your ending...very poignant. It must've been tough not coming back in to give commentary, but the way you left it made it very "real". I actually felt your loss.
Thank you, Billy! :)
Thanks a lot for all your videos, the way you explain the rules and your enthusiasm ! To me, this is a whole new gaming world/experience to discover.
Thanks for the kind words. I really like this category of games and how they recapture history in a live experience. :)

I have enjoyed every episode of this series and this one was such a powerful conclusion to it! I was surprised by how moved I was by the results of the final roll. The way you handled it, with the fade to black, followed by the simple text epitaph, set to the sounds of a vessel imploding, was masterful.
Thanks for the kind words, Dar Gaming! I confess I wasn't sure how the ending might come across, so I'm glad to hear that you appreciated it. I wanted to try something a bit different for an ending. :)
Spoilers...
It's been an honour, Kapitan Zilla. Very similar fate to my U-76, which managed 10 patrols before getting hit by a convoy escort. I also got a 12 roll, in my case the batteries were already damaged so it gave me a 13. I had 2 HuB's to use, but deemed a 13 to be a catastrophic fail. 116,700 tons gave me a marginal victory, but sure didn't feel like it.
One of the other commentators asked about a surfacing - I think that's counted as a loss because your Enigma stuff gets captured.
Looking forward to your next playthrough - my copy of Silent Victory has turned up, so I'm heading for warmer waters. I was thinking about The Hunted, but I've just watched a playthrough of that, and if anyone gets to patrol #5 I'd be surprised.
Yes, very similar fates for sure. The game is quite brutal in the later years. I can't imagine how hard The Hunted is. Might be fun to try for a shorter series. :)
With the forced scuttling, I believe there is a die roll you make, and in most cases you're able to surface, scuttle the ship, and only the crew are captured. I think on relatively rare die roll both the crew and the U-Boat get captured, in which case you lose the game.
@@ZillaBlitz You lose the game only if you fail to destroy your Enigma machine. Otherwise, you retain your level of victory. Frankly, my idea of a "successful patrol" is to return to port in one piece. Never mind the success level.
@@michaelstearnesstearnes1498 That I think is one of the things the game gets really well, that balance between risk and safety. And so many times after you make that initial decision all you can do is hope that things turn out okay. :)
@@ZillaBlitz You might consider looking at The Hunted. The boat mats for the Type VIIB & Type VIICs are a different design from that in The Hunters. They have space for the Bold decoys (avail. June 1942) and are equipped with the G7a & G7e FAT torpedoes
What I liked about this video is you were completely honest about your dice rolls and actually showed them unlike some Yewtewbr's. Kudo's to you 'Zilla you went down with your ship instead of trying to fudge your outcome to show your subsctibers what a great U booten commander you are!
Thanks! Yes, I promised myself for all video playthroughs that I will accept the dice as they are tossed, no matter what. I'm more interested in the story the game generates than having to win the game. I mean, I will try my hardest to win, but if we don't, no worries. We'll get 'em next time. :)
@@ZillaBlitzh👍🤺
Brilliant series!
Thank you, sir! :)
Well, this episode lived up to it's billing that's for sure! And your final scene was spectacular. Great series!
Thanks, Solo! This has been really fun to make. On to the next game! :)
Randomly found this playlist, watched them all and that made me get out the Hunters out and I'm playing it now. You did an excellent job on this game.
Thanks Johnny! I'm glad you enjoyed them. :) It's such a fun game to play. I hope you can have a successful campaign. Happy hunting!
Wow, I hadn't really realized how rapidly the DRMs stack up once you take damage. Yowza. Thanks for the playthrough!
Yeah, it went bleak pretty fast there. The +1 for capital ships and +1 for the fuel tanks really dropped us out of the "good chance to get away" range pretty quickly. I ran the numbers, and we had an 82% chance to escape with all those rolls, but yeah, dice roll gods weren't shining on us. We had so many unfortunate high rolls when we need a low one.
@@ZillaBlitz Mike,, here in blighty,, we say,,,,,, it's come on Top,,,,,,, or tits up , 🦕
Wow. What a gripping series this is. Can't wait for your next one.
Thanks, OLP! It's been a fun series to do! Thanks for all the support! :)

Loved the series!!
Thanks! I really want to get back to the idea of Submarine Mondays. :)
@@ZillaBlitz I’d certainly love to watch it if you did! I have silent victory on p500 order from GMT because I liked your series so much! It made the p500 cut so I’m eagerly awaiting updates
I really like both The Hunters and Silent Victory. :) There is also Beneath the Med, which is the same format but covers Italian submarines in WW2. The Hunted, as well, is in the in series, but I'd probably guide you away from that one as a first game because it's such a deadly time for U-Boats. It's hard to last long. :)@@MustangGT4
@@ZillaBlitz oh don’t worry I did plenty of “research” with your and others videos! Chose silent victory as I have to play for the home team. Thank you for the info, I look forward to your future videos!
@@ZillaBlitz I’m also trying to find Sherman leader because of your series but it’s like 200 bucks for some reason. Hope they reprint sometime!
I recently found your channel. I know I’m a little late, but what a great series. Well done.
You told a great story, explained the rules, and convinced me to buy a game from the series. A truly successful campaign.
Thanks, Kurt! I'm glad you enjoyed the series. I hope to get back to these submarine games by the end of January. I want to do Raiders of the Deep next, the World War 1 Uboat game. I hope you enjoy your game, too! These have been some of my most enjoyable wargaming experiences. :)
I've binged the entire series on this and enjoyed it very much.
Thanks, Badger, glad you enjoyed it! Silent Victory and Submarine Mondays coming soon. :)
Zilla, when you are exceeding test depth the first time and you role a 2 you need to advance hull damage by 1 and reroll again.
Also, to not budge travel zones you should always check with your submarine mat for each destination what the zones are and how many there are.
Continuing looking now and will chime in if I spot anything else. Great start!
Edit 1: When you don't stop the flooding you roll again until you do. So in your case you should have rolled to attempt stopping the flodding again after you didn't manage to stop it.
Edit 2: What a stupendous ending of this one. Happened to me too. Juicy target that looks great in the books but in practice it means you overreach...
Thank you for your service! :D
Nejc, thanks for the feedback!
Yes, the sub mat shows that the Atlantic goes Transit-Transit so that's what I used instead of the map. :)
For the flooding and exceeding test depth, are those things that were clarified in subsequent versions of rules, or rules for The Hunted? I ask because I remember wondering about both of those things early in our campaign and looking them up, but in The Hunters rules I didn't find anything like that. Possible I missed it, but I wonder if maybe those things are explained in The Hunted rules perhaps?
@@ZillaBlitz heya. Don't have the rulebook with me but pretty sure it is already written in the base the hunters rules when it comes to flooding.
Test depth exceeding is ommited in the base rules but was either confirmed by the designer or in the following games, forgot which one. Sorry I can't be more helpfull then that.
I'll have to take a look. I must have either overlooked it. Because I remember wondering the first time I had flooding whether to roll again if you didn't stop it. Intuitively, I figured you'd just keep rolling until it stopped, but when I looked at flooding in the rules I couldn't find anything to confirm it. I'll check again.
@@ZillaBlitz thank you. Do let me know please if I have understood it wrong and played it all wrong for such a long time. :D
I just checked my The Hunters 3rd printing rulebook. 10.1.3 has this in it:
"Roll 1d6 with a 5-6 resulting in additional flooding; immediately advance the Flooding marker one space on your Flooding track. On a roll of 4 or less, no additional flooding occurs." I read that as you only roll once, as the same section says to do this roll "following any combat round in which the U-Boat sustained at least one Flooding damage". There's no mention there of additional rolls until the flooding stops. What do you think?
I love your enthusiasm in your series. You make it exciting without resorting to histrionics. Great video and I subscribed. Have you ever played "The Hunted"? I haven't had the nerve to so far!
Thanks, Scott! I have the other 3 games in the series but this is the firs tone I've played. I imagine The Hunted is brutally hard. In real life, so many U-Boats were sunk after the middle of 1943.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
What an unlucky end, but we said it a million times before, it just needs one patrol where the dice gods are against you and it's all over. This does make me very sad. But I think you did so well, this was so fun to watch. And I honestly did not know that so many people in U-boats died in that time period. Really crazy to think about
I was happy to make it this far, to be honest, and it was really fun to play. :) I think I learned quite a bit too and yet, part if it really comes down to the odds. I ran a test and we had an 82% chance to get away there, with all the evasion rolls we had. It just didn't work out. Perhaps next time! :)
@@ZillaBlitz Ah, that‘s a shame. But at least you make it to the ‚conditional win‘ category!
Thanks for the series it was very enjoyable! Will have to watch for reprints of this game.
Thanks, Sartana! I'm hopeful this will get a reprint sometime soon. I'm kind of surprised it hasn't made the list yet. There is a place you can go to upvote P500 games, I'll have to see if I can find that again.
great play through all the way got pounded by depth changes which finished the game.
Thanks, yeah, that final patrol was brutal. Oh, well, sometime I hope to come back and try again with a new series. :)
That was brutal. Still, I still thought you were going to get a lucky roll right up till the end. What a brilliant series this has been.
Thanks, Custard. This was super fun to make, at some point I think I want to do another one, probably with Silent Hunter (US in Pacific) next.
Thank you for the series. What a great game! Greetings from a former submariner
It's an honor to have a submariner watch this! Thanks for the kind words and for stopping in! :)
You did a great job on this series! Thank you!
Thanks much, Im ad! I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
Banging play through. So awesome I just bought the game. Watching your Sherman Leader video as well, bought it. Next is Silent Victory. Great job!
Thanks, Randy! I'm glad you've been enjoying them, thanks for the kind words. You were able to find The Hunters? If so, that's great! I know it's been out of print for a bit. Thanks for watching!
Excelent series. I have played a lot to the Silent Victory. I will have to try this one. I think the one in the Pacific the American subs got more changes because they fire a salvo of 6 torpedos from the front and 4 from the rear. 10 in total.
Thanks, Ramon! I've started a new series with Silent Victory and am enjoying that one quite a bit too. Unfortunately, we started with a Salmon class sub so only 8 torpedoes. Hoping for an upgrade. :)
@@ZillaBlitz I saw it. I am looking for the next episode. Have a good hunt!!!!!!

Great series - looking forward to your next.
What the heck? I think UA-cam deleted my own reply. :) I swear I replied to this already. ~ Thanks! This has been great fun to make, and at the same time I'm excited to try something new.
@@ZillaBlitz Got an email that you 'loved my comment' but not an actual reply like there usually is. I didn't want to give anything away, so left my comment short. I purposely did not look at comments until I finished watching. A really effective finishing touch to the finish. Really well done. I guess all the mentioning of the 13th mission tempted fate.
@@Stumptonian1 Hmm. I must have gotten pulled away from things before I hit reply. Thanks! And yeah, now I'll be even more freaked out next time a series like this gets to Episode 13. Have to buy a Positive Wave Generator or something.
Completely good series and very interesting one. I would just propose to developers to include some "bonus points" even for the damaged ships. I think, it is worth something when you forced ship to be repaired (usually for a few months), especially for capital ones! I enjoyed this series a lot, anyway...
Thanks! That's a great point on the damaged ships for sure. I know there is an optional rule/variant for when you drop mines too, that you get some credit for tonnage sunk by mines. That'd be nice as well, as the mine-laying missions are kind of non-events. :)
Phenomenal... Royal Oak was a tough B@stard. I must admit it was ominous to see that this was the last episode in the series. I wish I known about this last year. Well done good sir.
Thanks, Ro! There is a Silent Victory series on the channel too, and we'll be back with more submarine content in the future. I think next up will be Raiders of the Deep, the WW1 U-Boat sim in the same vein. Thanks for stopping in and watching! :)
I want this game but it is $174 on Amazon and P500 at manufacturer. I think that means I have to wait until 500 people order it before they start the reprint...
I know with some of the P500 reprints they don't wait until they have 500 orders. I'm not sure what their criteria are, but I've seen cases where a game gets reprinted before it hits 500.
If you want to try very similar games, Beneath the Med (Italian subs) is readily available and uses the same system, more or less. Compass Games has Raiders of the Deep, which is supposedly very similar too. Hope that helps!
I think you're forgetting the +1 Attack DRM for rolling a 12 or higher on the Detection roll. When you add the massive +4 and +5 modifiers to the Detection roll, you were rolling 12 or higher each time. Turned out not to matter, but still, for future reference. What a tense one!
Oh, right! Of course! Yeah, that makes total sense. At first, I was like, "What's he talking about. I added in the +1 DRM when I rolled 12s!" But I didn't do so when I rolled 8s and 9s and what not, and they would have been 12+ with the DRMs on detection. Brilliant! Thanks for pointing that out. I'll add it to the known errors section. :)
Like you say, unfortunately, it didn't matter... :)
Always remember that there are only two kinds of ships at sea - submarines and targets!
Yep, and sometimes when you are a submarine, both those things are the same. :)
Unlucky 13.
Really enjoyable series and a sad demise due to a Capital ship. Loved the ending, the facts, figures and what a dangerous life it was for a submariner in those days.
Just hoping GMT have another release in the pipeline.
Thanks, coyi! Yeah, that was a rough ending, but happy to make it as far as we did. I recall seeing a site or a place where you could upvote games for the P500 system. No idea now where I saw that, but ... it exists. :)
There's no indication that GMT has any plans to reprint The Hunters any time soon. During a recent interview with designer Greg Smith on the Compass townhall website he indicated that he might redo the game sometime. He has many projects in the pipeline including Atlantic Sentinels which will tie into The Hunters. So keep your fingers crossed for a Hunters makeover.
Brutal patrol 13... very unlucky... I would of used both of my lucky charm rerolls on that first detection roll... once they get on you your done for... same thing happened to me, shot and sunk capital ship (Edwards I think it was..) and they destroyer came over and just blasted me until I had nothing left...
Yeah, when we started getting down to those really low escape rolls it was probably too late. It was a pretty exceptional run of bad luck at the beginning in not getting away though, but oh well. Thanks for watching! :)
Mission #13…well cé la vie. Nice campaign. Thou. But I have never seen so much bad luck with torpedo damage😀
And then good luck getting away… except this time🙈
Yeah, once we got down to needing those low rolls to escape, yikes. It just wasn't our day. We had a fun run though, and we'll have to try again at some point. :)
Well, if you really want a tough challenge, try ”the hunted”. I managed to survive until the end of the war😓. But man! It was a rollercoaster, enter la Rochelle with my boot totally shot up mission after mission.
I've heard that's really hard, yes! And I have the game, just not played it yet. I definitely want to do what I imagine will be a short series on it. You're the first person I've heard of who has been able to complete a tour with it. Most people say things like, "sunk on my second patrol". :)
I survived the hunters and had experienced crew members. And I chose my targets very carefully. Sometimes it was a close call, and several hals undt beinbruch were used. But if I would have had a green crew, i would probably last no more than 2-3 patrols!
That's got to feel good, making it through that game. Congrats!
Epic series!!!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
This was an excellent series! I love the submarine games. Try Target for Today, any of the coin series games , skies above the reich but I’m partial to the sub games.
Thanks reptar! Everyone keeps mentioning Target for Today. I'm going to have to explore that sooner than later. Seems like a lot of people feel like it would be a good fit. I speak a bit to these things in the channel update from yesterday, and a submarine plan is in the works. :)
I've been on missions in a similar situation where it seemed the sub was doomed but then I managed to roll the magic snake eyes on the detection roll.
That would have been amazing! I was praying for snake eyes. We rolled so many 12s in there, it was crazy. And I don't even think we were close on any evasion roll. I should check what each detection roll was, but I don't recall getting less than an 8. Dice roll gods be like: "Go play a different game." :)
Should have used the lucky charm on a detection roll.
I was thinking about that, like where else would it have made sense to use the roll. I was hopeful that we'd not take so many hull hits in close succession at the end. In retrospect, I wonder about exceeding test depth so early as well, and we could have taken more damage had we not self-inflicted 3 hits on the hull. In the end though, by the time we got down to a detection roll of a 2, we were fairly well doomed I think.
I restarted from Shot 4 at Royal Oak. I used the first of the two lucky charms on Shot 4, got a 4 instead of 11, rolled 2 for damage of 4, and sank Royal Oak. With the Capital ship gone, the detection adjustment of +3 went to +2,, and the sub going deep for -1 netted +1 for detection, with one lucky charm remaining. So it's better to use the lucky charm while it can still do some good, instead of waiting until you're "mostly dead" at the very end. Thanks for the game!
Great ending. Loved the series, what's up next?
Thanks, Raider! What's next is a good question. I'm working this week on a short tutorial series for Captain's Sea, which will have a small playthrough in it. And a couple of unboxings. For the next true playthrough, I'm thinking possibly Absolute War, but ... not sure. Open to ideas, but I am leaning towards something with hexes (or areas) and 2-player soloed.
Could you have used the Good Luck charm to re-roll the detection check at 14:35? to re-roll the twelve?
Possibly? It's been a while since I've played, but I think I recall that there were some restrictions on what types of rolls you could use the Good Luck charm on, so it wasn't everything. I might be mistaken, though.
I remember trying to be very logical about when I wanted to use that Good Luck Charm, but yeah, in the end it just didn't work out. I think the odds were fairly low that we would have died there, but once it spun out of control it really went sideways fast.
Enjoyed this series a great deal...
Consider using optional evasion and escort quality rules next time?
Thanks Edward! Yeah, I think I'd look over the optional rules next time and likely adopt a couple. I think the optional evasion and escort quality might be fun, yes, as things kind of get on rails while you're getting hunted. It'd be nice to take some risks to try to get away other than exceeding test depth.
@@ZillaBlitz ....does add a layer of realism imo...of course last time I used them I got caught in a cycle of detections/attacks...glub glub...
Yeah, things can sure spiral in a bad direction quickly, can't they? Especially once you drift away from the 6,7,8 range of dice rolls, the odds start getting thin really fast.
@@ZillaBlitz indeed...game really does a good job of "involving" the player...
Same with target 4 today etc...
That might be good one to get to the table sooner than later. :)
Wasn't the Royal Oak sunk at Scarpa Flow in like the opening days of the war ?
Yes, just looked it up and you are correct. Sunk by U-47. I believe all the targets in the game were ships sunk in WW2 by real U-Boats.
@@ZillaBlitz I saw HMS Courageous in the capital ship lists.
I had an Uncle who went down with her.
I believe that the family was told that 10 minutes before the torpedo hit he had been on deck...
There was another viewer who mentioned they lost a relative on a different ship earlier in the series, I think it was a particular cargo ship. Incredible to think of what living in those times must have been like.
Lesson learned. Avoid capital ships
Yes, although I often feel when playing these games that honor dictates a less prudent path. :)
Your sound special effects were awesome. Got chilled hearing all those water sounds.
Is there no opportunity for the captain to try and emergency surface so he can get some of his crew off the boat before it goes down?
Thanks, Charles. :) If we got flooded, we would have surfaced and scuttled, with a chance the U-Boat could be captured. The crew would have been captured, I believe, if we did that while being attacked, but in the game it's only an option when flooding maxed out. I didn't really see much we could have done there to mitigate things.
@@ZillaBlitz I think in the situation you faced, there was no option to surface. The only instance that I have read about of a WWII sunken sub having some survivors was the USS Tang where a few men survived using a Momsen lung. Maybe there are a few cases I don't know about but I think that such an escape would be nearly impossible.
I did have the flooding and scuttling happen in one game, it was a bummer; my guys probably ended up in Canada somewhere.
Yeah, we would have had to have been flooded to surface. It would have been nice to end up as POWs rather than perish, but such are the fates.
Z,
Good patrol but bad ending! I was hoping for a clean sweep! Are you going to try again or jump to the hunted? Either way, Good luck!
Yep, stuff happens, but we had a good time playing and that's the key. :) I'm thinking to shift to a different game for a bit, but I'm not sure. I have an idea for continuing submarine content as well. I'm going to put out a channel update in a day or two with the ideas, love some input if you have a chance to watch it. Trying to figure out what to do next. Thanks for stopping in!
What a fantastic series this has been. The only disappointing thing is that I can’t find anywhere to purchase this game from. Seems like it’s out of stock every where. ☹️
Thanks, Kenny! I'm glad you enjoyed it. You might have luck picking up one of the other games in the series: Silent Victory, Beneath the Med, or (the most difficult) The Hunted. I've seen Silent Victory and Beneath the Med available in a few places at regular prices.
Interesting submarine wargame. Unfortunately, the demise of U-86 underscores the frailty of placing too much emphasis on dice rolls to decide conflict. The list of evasive maneuvers and deceptive tactics open to the human player is completely ignored because there are none. No "run silent, run deep," no fake oil slicks, no detritus launched from torpedo tubes, no running under the thermal layer. Overall, well played by Zilla, but ultimately the final result was too predictable and, consequently, offered little insight into alternative outcomes.
Thanks! 🙂
Sir... I have the 1mc ready if you would like address the crew....
Lucky 13
We had a good run, everyone. Honor to serve with you all. Bravely into the dark, men, see you on the other side.
did you know that in 1942 the japanese seiged alaska
Vaguely? I don't know the details, but I recall they occupied some remote islands in the Aleutians, right? "Sieged Alaska" might be a bit of an overstatement? :)
@@ZillaBlitz yeah it`s an overstatement but the aleutians are a part of alaska so it still means something
Yes, for sure, it's an interesting story what happened up there, too. :)
I've been trying to find a link to the ocean map but no luck so far. Could someone post a link to that?
Only in german could "neck and leg break" mean good luck lol
Yes, here in the US it's just "Break a Leg", but in German you apparently break even more things. :)
Saying it is supposed to keep it from happening.
Anyone ever tell you you looked like the late comedian George Miller?
Ha! I haven't heard that one yet, no, but on taking a look I can see some resemblance for sure. Long lost brother perhaps? :)
I always cringe at Patrol 13. At least there's no black cats swimming across your bow out there. :)
Totally agree on the 13 thing! Hard not to let it get in your head.
@@ZillaBlitz Tell it to your dice BZ. The fade to black was inspired. :)
82% chance we escape with all those rolls we had. The dice giveth and the dice taketh away. So many bloody 12s too! Garg!
damn
Yeah, a fun run, but on to the next game. Thanks for your service! :)
@@ZillaBlitz Welcome now food for the fish
watching the last 8 min from about 22 min mark knowing you've already sunk but don't know it because of another mistake lol
We would have taken one more hit, which would have been very unlikely to have sunk the UBoat.
Moot fact ,,,,,,,, over 80 % of male kids born in Germany in 1923 weren't around after 1945 , amen. 🫂 🎉🙏
Yeah, just a brutal time in history. We've been fortunate to be born when we were.
