Did TVP World just say that Jadwiga and Jagiełło were married in 1569 (starts at 1:07)? The same Jagiełło that fought at Grunwald in 1410? Educate yourself before you want to educate the World please! 🙃
Exactly. The commonwealth appeared way later than the union of Poland and Lithuania which happened before Grunwald. Pretty massive historical mistake. 1569 was when the Jagiello dynasty was ending after almost 2 centuries of rule in Polish-Lithuania. Stefan Bathory of Transilvania would soon rise to the throne and the succession struggles with Sigismund Wasa with Sweden and even Russia lasting for decades and engulfing Baltic region.
I think you skipped over about a century when Poland and Lithuania faced the Teutonic Knights, who were in genocide mode in lands now called Prussia where they replaced the native Balts with Germanic peoples. The United Poles and Lithuanians alliance decimated that formerly unstoppable order. The resulting united Commonwealth actually should have included Ruthenia (yeah most have no idea what the heck that is) as an equal partner, Alas, what could have been. There was constant pressure from Sweden, the Teutonic Prussians and the Russians to tear that alliance apart. When Poland succumbed to three major powers assaulting and eventually partitioning it, they were without their centuries long relations, their brother Lithuania. Masses of propaganda over two centuries from the three partitioning powers gave Lithuanians such a negative view of the old powerful alliance, that when the chance came in 1919 to become unchained from the hoard of three that they actually took up arms Caine and Abel style against their brother nation. 200 years of Russian propaganda alone is formidable.
Poland was forced to go its own way without most of it's former allies and territories.
The Polish nation did well until attacked from the West by Germany and then while regrouping and reorganizing in the east, they were sneak attacked by Russia in one of History's most diabolical and treacherous invasions from the east.
I wish this war would end with the defeat of Russia and the patriation of Kaliningrad to Lithuania to become their sovereign territory.
Not forgotten by all.
