Not saying that I could do it - but in theory, as long as you know how to mod it at all, it shouldn't be that bad. Considering that Smash IS a game that fully works in 3D. It's just that normally, our movement ingame is restricted to two axis. So IN THEORY, it's really "just" rebinding the control stick's Y axis to move into the depth, and remove any checks in the game that try to prevent that. In praxis, it's probably very hard, but just in theory it's not that bad.
For those curious why the stage collision reaches into the background: Smash uses a Raycast (visualized as a diamond shape in debugging) for stage collision. This raycast isn't actually tied to the player model, rather it follows the 2D coordinates of the model. So, when the characters walk into the background, the raycast actually stays in the proper Z-coordinate, despite the models being in a different Z-coordinate. EDIT: this 2d collider is also why they could footstool each other regardless of their Z-position
Interesting! But if that's the case, then how come the characters still fall off platforms in the Z axis? Wouldn't platforms follow the same rules as well?

I could see Nintendo partnering with Koei Tecmo for a 3D Smash game (ala Dissidia). Nintendo has worked with KT numerous times at this point, so it could happen.
Yeah, pretty much the main difficulty of a 3D smash is directional inputs. A lot of 3D fighting games either put no directional input, or have a targetting system with directional inputs in relation to your target. But for Smash where you could be 8 players fighting at once, auto-targetting can be quite messy, while manual targetting would be hard to manage and may just lead to people being too lazy to change target. Without targetting, the best I could see for mimicking directional inputs would be one of these two methods: - Smash inputs. You'd have a "neutral" attack by not inputing any direction, a "front" attack for attacking while moving, but doing smash inputs in different directions would trigger back or side attacks. Back and Side tilts would be too awkward to trigger, while "up" and "down" attacks wouldn't be a thing. - Separate Crouch and Jump button. You'd have neutral and side attacks with regular movements, down attacks with inputs together with crouching (including in air), and up attacks if you press Jump and Attack at the same time. There wouldn't be any "back" attack, though. Also, the main difficulty with this is placing the buttons in a way that feels natural to use.
I do use Tap Jump, in general it plays well, and I find the Y and X button locations on a Gamecube controller to be awkward for jumping. But yeah I am aware that disabling Tap Jump is better for competitive, for more precise techs, and especially to not input a jump before certain Up Specials like Megaman and Bayonetta. However, I meant to talk about both a Crouch and a Jump button at the same time. It's not rare for games to have a jump button and two types of attack buttons within the 4 front buttons, that generally works well, but if you make the 4th button a crouch button, doing directional inputs kind of become very awkward. You need to be able to input both Jump + Attack, Jump + Special, Crouch + Attack and Crouch + Special at the same time, so chances are you'd need to hold your controller in weird ways to be able to do all of these inputs. We could put them in the trigger buttons instead, but jumping with these feels unnatural for many players.
