  • I'm back from retirement for one final challenge! We will be taking control of Greece immediately following the 2010 debt crisis that brought the country to its knees. To make things even more interesting, we will be playing on maximum difficulty. Yes, you heard that right: The hardest modded nation in the game on the hardest difficulty. I'm sure it'll be fine.

      Hahaha, this happened in Estonia, the state slapped insane taxes on alcoholic drinks. Estonia is one of the top dogs in alcohol consumption so people decided to buy their shit in Latvia where it is two times cheaper (as is fuel, food, hardware). Now Latvian border towns sell more alcohol than the rest of Latvia combined and the state budget has a hole because retarded politicians couldn’t think one step ahead.

    I like your advocacy for trade and tech schools. Coming from a country that has a LOT of them and not so coincidentally exports millions of labor to the US for jobs learned from these schools, your point is more than proven. The US has no shortage of jobs for these people. I guess it comes with the stigma that if you have less than a four year degree in college you can't succeed in life.

    18:10 _but_ the countries that focus on rehabilitation instead of incarceration happen to have the lowest violent crime rates. It's not necessarily solely due to this, but a country like say Norway has an incredibly effective prison system that focuses on this - the opposite model I would say is the US, who I think we all agree has big problems on the state level with mass incarceration, problems that are leading states like PA to start using reforms to reduce sentence lengths for non-violent offenders.
    I'm of the opinion that the conservatives have this one wrong - though I must admit that the appeals to emotion (ie. "keep those MS13 illegals off the streets for life!" or w/e) are undeniably effective.

      Point falls apart when you look at the diversity in Norway. It’s a good point but it’s not going to solve the issue.

    • @triphill9681
      @triphill9681 4 роки тому

      I dont understand what the diversity has to do with anything with other emotional stances. We all have biases, that's just a result of conditioning from a fight, flight, or freeze. But if you truly believe the Jeffersonian/Bacon (and all that repeated the idea) that all humans are created equal, then it just boils down to adjust rehabilitation of values, beliefs, and norms people were raised early life. Extreme/violent crimes is a split based off of malis and environment, kind of a manslaughter piece of the argument. If you don't see humans as equal (this is not a pointed statement) and you don't believe in the ability of true rehabilitation with the expectation of society to accept them back in to market (meaning there is a reasonable expectation to hiring ex-cons) then what is the purpose of even keeping anyone alive? I'm really not trying to make an icto procto argument I would just like to clarify the parameters of what diversity in an equal but class based society.

    As a matter of fact, rehabilitation does reduce crime drastically. In the US, where justice is the focus and nobody cares about rehabilitation, there is an 80% recividism rate. However, in Norway, where rehabilitation is a big focus, there is a 20% recividism rate. Rehabilitation is more than just telling people that crime is wrong. In a lot of or most cases mental health is a huge cause of their crimes, so just with psychologial help you can reintegrate a lot of people into society.

    Rehabilitation of prisoners is usually a smart idea and a smart investment from the governments perspective. Case in point Norway which have a really low crime rate and recidivism rate because the rehabilitate people. This means that when they are released from prison they become hard-working citizens instead of hardened criminals. If one would look at the USA this is not what is happening, people are treated like criminals and therefore think that they can only be criminals. So instead of making sure criminals commit more crimes, one should make sure they commit fewer crimes.

    Two things to comment; I criminology major and rehabilitation have seen major effects on crime.
    2. Regarding the married and raising children. I heard you talk about statistics regarding alcohol and health earlier about the two glass a week thing. We must remember that statistics is a two way street and does not say much about cause end effect. The alcohol messurements got those result probably because those who drink more alcohol has a worse less healthy lifestyle. A perfectly healthy adult that stops drinking 2 glass a week would not save a year if his life. That is simplification of statistics.
    Same goes for marriage. That people "stick together" and would raise more well adjusted babies because of it is a simplification. The statistics is more likely the way it is because people that stick together have a more well functioning family, giving more care to their children. The statistics show more "well functioning parents" then marriage. I don't say you are wrong but be careful how to read statistics.

      For your first point, I definitely think you have a point. The scandinavian model, which focuses on extensively rehabilitation, has been extremely successful at reducing recidivism rates.
      I implore all of you who are interested to watch the documentary "Breaking the cycle" (ua-cam.com/video/NuLQ4gqB5XE/v-deo.html), where an Norwegian prison warden joins an American warden to visit a maximum security prison, and vice versa. It truly is fascinating to see the differences within the two systems and the effects it has.

      US Prisons have sent administrators to judge the Scandinavian anti-recidivism model and... it does save money, it stops recidivism and it leads to better outcomes for society.
      The desire to make prison a punishment and, of course, the needs of the prison industry are the ONLY reasons to run the US prison model the way that it is run, according to everything I've read.

    • @Exodon2020
      @Exodon2020 6 років тому +12

      The Problem with ineffective Tax Offices. They usually track down tax evaders and can get pretty good at it - but of course it's hard work to convict business owners. You'll need to check over their balance sheets, P&Ls, tax returns and so on and so forth - every year in order to track deviations hinting towards an illegal shift of money. And you'll have to do that for every business there is including self-providing farmers, etc. It's even harder to detect tax evasions on a private level - but there aren't that high amounts involved so it might be better to concentrate on businesses first.
      I'm convinced getting Greek Tax offices up and running again would have been actually a service to the country as opposed to putting it in chains sacrificing everything to serving the interest of its enormous amount of debt. Instead going for the latter did only make the situation worse - but then again it was political corruption leading to public administration being in such a poor condition in the first place.

    • @ottopike6000
      @ottopike6000 4 роки тому +1

      I mean in real life the Greeks were literally avoiding 70% of their taxes. The game simply don't accounts for the scale of the evasion.
      Greece would have needed to publicize the both VAT and income taxes, as well as heavily ramped up enforcement in order to even have a chance of fixing their problems.

    In my high school calculus was only required if you wanted to graduate with honors. In order to graduate at all you had to pass a course called economics where we had a semester long project where you picked a job you were considering for the future and then had to make a monthly budget based off of its average income. You were required to find a real place to live and an actual vehicle listing to determine your transportation and housing costs. You also had to budget for vehicle and home insurance if you didn't rent, groceries, entertainment, medical expenses, vehicle maintenance, and savings. The class also talked heavily about supply and demand and other basic concepts for how economies work. Good class, if more people understood some economic basics and how to make a budget I think our economy would be in better shape.

      true I was going to argue what you did, plus the liberal system of handling prison is actually what leads to both the high cost of prison (due to it being paid by state on a "per man" basis) and the high repeat of crime (due to poor imprisonment condition leaving former detained with no move to earn their life outside of committing crimes), and guess what? no warden paid to have their man imprisonned would want to create a system where they are freed in advance or not coming back (would be good to implement a budget for achieved rehabilitation to the prison system, but that would cost a lot for sure...)

    Technical/trade/vocational schools should definitely be a much bigger focus in the US. Huge. Our education bubble has focused so many people on 4-year universities as the end-all be-all goal, when as you pointed out, tons of job roles and industries are seeing their workers age out with nowhere nearly enough qualified younger workers ready to take their place.
    e.g. one of my friends is working towards certification as a land surveyor -- not the dudes in the field holding the sticks, but actually managing and updating county records, and checking measurements and valuations for accuracy. He's the one who puts the official stamp on the work, like a lawyer or doctor signing off on what an assistant has done. There are only a few hundred people in the county doing this work for a 6 million population. Last year 17 people retired, but only 4 new people applied for certification -- and only 1 passed the exam.
    It's a crisis of old people in many fields -- and if new workers/students exiting high school or entering the workforce were informed about these opportunities AND THEIR HIGH-DEMAND, desperate salaries, we'd eventually see tiny upticks in new applicants. Earn $65k without going to college. For plumbers/electricians, train up to earning $70k to $100k in 5-10 years.
    Or fight all the other medieval history majors out there for the 7 medieval studies positions that open up in academia every year... :P

Now this does make a bit of sense considering to course is more for if you actually want to be an accountant, and they say you should only take it if that's what you want to do. Capitalism: free-market for all, generally no subsidies or other govt intervention
    Corporatism: giving corporations and businesses free shit

    An important thing to remember about celebrities and celebrity endorsements is celebrities are still people with political opinions they just have a platform. The bigger the platform the bigger the audience that is hearing you. I'd say most people want their opinion to be heard and want to educate their fans on things that they think are important.
    Even you Pravus can be considered a celebrity with a political platform (e.i. This UA-cam channel). You play this game and upload it to inform your audience on politics and take time to inform them and talk about your views. Are you a politician? That doesn't matter, you should be able to express your views on politics either way.
    Either way, great content. I like you going more in depth to talk about economics.

    Actually. Several countries have adopted policies more akin to extensive rehabilitation and experience shows that it's both cheaper (since keeping people imprisoned is extremely expensive too) and it's better at preventing new crimes. While it's certainly true that not everyone is in favor of such a system, especially conservatives, it is a system that shown to be pretty much universially benefical.

    On your point about why people go to college/university rather than a technical college - there's many who are still stuck in the mentality that knowledge = higher paycheck. It's one of the reasons why the US moved from a highly industrious country to a more service orientated economy. The medical field probably being the exception, many move into law or finances to make the big bucks. The downside to this kind of directional thinking is that those who keep the country running by doing the practical jobs, end up getting looked down upon. Realise what will happen to your daily lives if blue collar workers stop showing up for work - because for some reason many of the practical jobs in the US get paid so little, some have to take up two jobs.
    That said I'm planning on going to university (not in the US btw) because I can't exactly think of what I want to do, just which direction I wanna go in. And also because I have both the practical and financial means to do so.

    The thing with technology reducing religious membership makes sense, since there are people who believe in god not for the conviction that god is actually there, but for the comfort of having a superior beside you, who helps in your everyday life, with unemployment, abusive family, rejection, etc. But as technology becomes more common in that person's life, they are able to cope better with the difficulties, since they can, for instance, distract themselves with a TV or computer, talk to their friends and other people willing to help them from anywhere and other things, depending on the difficulties the person is facing. As the individual's life gets calmer, stable and better, added to the fact that they usually don't have the faith of a true believer, and technology gives something besides a god for you to attribute existential questions to, it can happen of them losing their belief, either through lost of interest or lost of faith.

      It is also worth noting the important effect of free access to information reducing the effectiveness of the religious indoctrination of children. It's less effective once people have invested too deeply into incorporating the ideology into their identity but young children that are still learning about the world and forming their identities tend to be more curious and open to at least considering different ideas.

      There were once studies that claimed that, for fully-developed adults, moderate drinking actually had some health benefits. That said, I recall seeing a more recent article refuting that claim, so for now the jury's out on whether or not the benefits outweigh the risks.

    • @Enchie

    • @samdaley8484
      @samdaley8484 6 років тому +13

      As a "fun" fact about the American drinking age-- the whole "brain development" thing is usually cited as the reason for the drinking age being set at 21, but it's actually because the federal government was trying to meet the wants of some Evangelical groups, and so they required the states to set the drinking age to 21 if they wanted money for interstate highways.

    • @RedbadofFrisia
      @RedbadofFrisia 6 років тому +8

      Sam Daley that is a fun fact. Though the brain development is a true factor. My country is far from evangelical and has recently increased the drinking age after decades of research proved it detrimental for adolescents.

    I think technology colleges and technical schools are two different things, at least per the description. The description makes it sound like it focuses on high-tech industry training rather than classic trades that Mike Rowe and others advocate for, meaning it's fast-tracking people for six-figure salaries and white collar jobs that might prove to be an obstacle to those who've had fewer educational opportunities in life (poorer school districts and that kind of thing). However, I do agree with you in technical schools. I started a job working for the state at $12.70/hr that REQUIRED a bachelor's degree. You can learn a trade within a fraction of the time and start making almost twice that if you go into the right field and move to the right location. It's pretty screwed up how America is on this but hopefully it's changing or will change rapidly.

    As for what you said about rehabilitation, that's just factually not true.
    The system you have currently costs as much per prisoner as the way Norway handles their prisoners and they have 1/10 the relapse rate of the US.
    Consider that people who are repeat offenders in the US keep draining money, while in Norway they reform them and make sure they have options when they get out so they won't relapse and fall back into prison.
    Spending X money on a person once is more effective than spending ½X on a person 10 times.

    I'm years late BUT 8:51 with the whole alcohol thing, we owe about 4k on the Bill's over a year of my mother not paying them. Why? Every dime we had went to alcohol. We rarely had money for even groceries, it's bad. How they buy it without money? They don't pay the Bill's, get only nessecary groceries, as in like, a week of food for 3 people. Not big meals, small meals worth. Also, almost all luxuries other then alcohol are gone. I know from what my mom did before she passed due to her alcoholism, that's how they do it and it's really upsetting to see, ESPECIALLY if they have family they leave burdens onto from it.
    That, that is how they get it. And it is extremely unfortunate.
    It is extremely upsetting, and I can only hope people having that sort of situation only get better from now, as it is super hard to go through.

    About the prisons. Man I get your point. I do think tho, that the bias to rehabilitation prisons is an american thing honestly. We do have people like that in europe, but you should look at the statistics. Crime rates in germany are waaaay lower, but probably statisticly more importantly, people who get to prison are way less likely to commit crimes again here, than they are in the US. There's an amazing Ted Talks video about that topic, I highly suggest you take a look at that. It's really interesting and my opinion is, that bias and media propaganda (and I'm not talking about lies or fake news, talking about selective information, which both parties use like a lot. Especially, as far as I can perceive it, Fox news and stuff like that. Talking bout lobby based news, availability of more unbiased news or at least awareness of really biased news.) is a big problem in the US and leads to a lot of missinformation, which is probably where the whole americans-are-dumb prejudice is partly coming from.
