This is the greatest jazz channel on UA-cam. I’m late to jazz guitar and didn’t know Jimmy’s background. I thought I just discovered a grumpy old man with mad guitar skill and knowledge. I love everything about these videos, especially the cursing. Thank you Jimmy. I’m a fan.
I’m late to jazz also. Really enjoying it, particularly how much , more there is to discuss and “strategize” than blues and rock. This is my first time watching Bruno. I’ve also been enjoying Jens Larsen.
I just came across this channel for the first time today. Reminds me of a guitar teacher I used to work with at a music school in the NYC suburbs in the late 80's. Guy was a badass player and real straight shooter like him.
Joe Pesci is actually a really good jazz singer. He did a record with joey DeFrancesco and Pat Martino,he went under the pseudonym "Joe Doggs". I know this is not what you meant by the comparison, I just thought it was a funny coincidence. Check out the record, it's pretty good.
I stumbled across this as a guitarist turning to jazz and hadn't heard of Mr Bruno, I watched his amazing skill with harmony and researched who he was....an incredible player. I learnt more in 20 minutes than I have in hours of other stuff. Incredible!
As a second rate jazz guitarist with many heroes, just wanted to say I love you Jimmy. All the best, sir. I could listen to you all day, and you always make me laugh. Thanks. Oh, and you've still got it. Don't get many of you for the dollar.
The lightning bolt is back... wheeeeew.... I feel better !! Captain Dy-no-mite !! Hey about musicians listening differently, to music, than non musicians, it would be the same for how carpenters look at houses. A carpenter is going to see how a house is constructed when he looks at it. A lay person is going to look at the same house and think about whether or not it's cute. It's just the nature of attaining knowledge that having it, makes you view things differently than when you didn't have it. There are advantages to each perspective.
I was watching these when Jimmy was posting them. For all his craziness at times, I'm thankful for him and these videos. An eye opener for me. Some if it eventually sunk in to me, made me better.
Best line ever Jimmy, "... it's a beautiful instrument the guitar, and it's a real shame that they want to distort it, in any way, ...maybe I'm a retro guy..Good!" Good stuff. I couldn't agree more with that statement.
You two above have some nerve !! You're watching and listening to Jimmy Bruno (FOR FREE !!) and telling him whom you like better !! Does Jimmy really need to know that ??!! What do we take away from your tactless comments ? What !!?
@@MarkInLA I didn’t mean it in a way that disrespects Jimmy Bruno or any other guitar player for that matter. Tal Farlow was amazing for his time. Jimmy Bruno is also a great player.
Tal was my first hero. People have been compared to Tal but Ive never agreed with any comparison. His feel and note choice was just in a world of it's own. I've tried really hard in the past to emulate his vibe/tone and it's near impossible.
I watched my hometown turn to spaghetti too. Houston, Texas was such a cool town once, but then the whole world moved there. Now you can't drive your car there.
Ha.. Jimmy you are a legend,. There is an old cliche, there are those that can teach and those that can play. Your deffinatly a player but im loving your videos.
Im a musician, but never learned theory. I still tend to hear lyrics foremost, but also love to hear the intricate little things the producers or artist add. Things that arent necessarily front and center.
Not every talented guitarist knows theory, but all guitarists that do have at least some talent, or are able to pass of that they do! I waited decades to learn theory, but its worth it.
Absolutely love your work. I'm from France, can you add subtitles please? Would love to better understand your advices and stories. Thanks, all the best.
Mon Ami, his words maybe could be the thing that helps you acquire English (if you so desire). I found that to acquire my second language, I needed: musics, lyrics, maybe an extra cool girlfriend, and when interesting characters & sages have things to say that you REALLY wanna know…. this desire to understand (and be understood) makes the brain turn on: and it’s lovely. Classroom work and books are not NOTHING, but this situation-here-above: wherein you really wanna understand: this will really bring you up. If you work with a singer who is super-verbal, and you focus on your guitar, perhaps you could maybe coax your singer into translating for you ? If it were a Portuguese translation you were looking for, I would do this favor for you because I’d benefit greatly from the learning acquired through speech and meaning…
Jim, the diminished chords you mention in this context really are dominant 7ths anyway; dominant 7 , b9 with no root, so cats just started looking at these "passing" diminished sevenths as their true dominant functions.
In other words, they didn't get rid of these diminished by "replacing" them with dominants, these diminished were always dominant FUNCTION anyway. Thanks Jim!
The Bell Curve of people who know about the Bell Curve is probably lower and wider than the typical Bell Curve. I had to check to make sure I wasn't watching at 2x speed during the Tatum example Riffs. Durned if it wasn't Normal speed.
Very pretty Jim walking those chords around. Wish I could afford lessons, but they I interfere with every single thing I do and the point their finger at me. Here...I got a couple a fingers for em 🖕🖕
