  • Matangireia, the former Māori Affairs Committee Room at Parliament, was officially reawakened with a dawn ceremony following the completion of conservation work.
Hosted by Parliament and mana whenua, the ceremony was attended by iwi, descendants of the original carvers and weavers who created the room, and whānau of the ministers who urged for the creation of the room in the 1920s (including James Carroll, Sir Apirana Ngata, Māui Pōmare, Taurekareka Henare and Te Rangi Hīroa).
The internationally award-winning Matangireia conservation project included hundreds of hours of restoration work, a series of wānanga and collaboration with Zealandia Ecosanctuary, Studio Carolina Izzo Ltd., Parliamentary Service and other groups and individuals.
2022 also marks 100 years since Matangireia first opened.
“In the very early days, Matangireia would’ve been something of a touchstone to the MPs and communities who went there,” says Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Deputy Chief Executive Kaihautū Dean Whiting.
“It would’ve been a place that, while looking familiar and feeling comfortable, was also an environment where Māori could assert their political ambitions and stand strong.”
