I’ll be using that, thanks. However I’ll also be using a clamp instead of my fingers.
Already almost lost em once.
True true I had an old carpenter tell me once it’s not if you get cut it’s when and how bad but I’ve been lucky I still have all ten but there are some scars. I’m glad I could help and thanks for watching I have a new video coming out Thursday trying to get back at it!
how would you use a clamp so the saw moves smoothly
It works better if you wrap a little bit of electrical tape around your index finger so you get a smoother slide on splintery boards and keep from getting splinters .
Not a bad idea especially if your going to need to use this tip numerous time in a short period
@@keepmakindust I used this years ago making a lot of decks . I got so I could make a 12 foot rip ( back when lumber had length to it ) fairly easily and manage to keep my cut line straight . I also found that electrical tape worked better than band aids for minor cuts because it was able to keep the wound closed and allow the wound to knit easier rather than fall off like Band aids always did on the job . The medical profession would probably shriek at the thought of this practice today .
Pretty damn cool.
Great tip!!! Finally someone who talks right and explains perfectly without running their mouth trying to sound over the top. Thanks brother. Gonna get started on my pew pew hider.
Thanks Kirk I’m glad I could help I hope this little trick helps with some of your projects. It’s funny you say that I’ve been thinking about making one myself well more like a case anyways thanks for watching and I hope to hear more from you in the future also if it turns out shoot me some pictures I’d like to see it
@@keepmakindust it's turning out okay so far. Gotta figure out the face to cover it. Basically a box with a sliding cover.
@@kirkgreen7973 I understand there have been many projects I just jump into and figure out how I want it as I go but that’s part of the fun in woodworking
Masterclass on what beginners should never do
I can’t say I agree with that. If a beginner feels comfortable trying this they should not everyone is scared of everything like some of the people commenting
been doing it since I was a beginner. just don't be a retard. that's the key.
it's a common practice to use your finger as a guide.. your hand is stabilized and far from the blade.
Yeah as a beginner this looks pretty dangerous
Good idea but maybe a bit dangerous
yes and no thanks for watching
I’d like to see your channel with full on videos man. awesome video
thanks I love comments like this makes me feel like at least someone enjoys them so I have one scheduled for 10/28/23 and I'm going to try to start doing a bugger build, a few shorts, one smaller build and one tool review every month a big order to fill but excited hope to see you commenting and if you have something you would like to see shoot me a comment and ill see if I can make it happen thanks for watching

I have to type with my tongue now...
lol look if your not comfortable with this trick maybe you shouldn't try it
We just discovered you and are loving your videos! Can you share, where are you from? We are guessing somewhere in the mountains!
Hey Mr. Rob first thanks for watching its awesome to hear people like what I’m doing. As for where I’m from I wish it was mountains my wife and I love the Appalachian mountains but sadly no I’m from north west Florida where it’s stays just between habanero and hell on the temperature scale lol. Anywho I’m in the process of building my new shop and hope to get back to making videos in the fall. Not to toot my own horn but I’ve got some pretty cool stuff lined up I hope y’all will continue watching thanks for the comment!!
@@keepmakindust ok good deal! I hear you, I've been in NW FL on occasion, does seem to get a little toasty there. I did some research on Longleaf Pine at Eglin AFB and roamed around the region a bit. We will look forward to your next videos!
I just found your channel! Please keep posting man this is really helpful!
hey so I feel off the grid there for a little while but I'm starting back next Thursday 10/28 and hope to keep up with it this time thanks for watching

How does one adapt this to a wider piece of lumber? I have some 2x10s that I need to rip 1/8" off. Clamp my level to the board and use that as a guide?
You would do it the same way you just wouldn’t have as much of your saw base on the board. So if your using a right hand saw the board would be on your right and you would pinch it at 1/8”. Hope this answer helps
The saw comes with a T fence so that we can keep our fingers
True and I believe I said that but not all come with a rip fence
This saved my life
Awesome I’m glad to hear I could help 👍
I've never understood why they haven't made a vertical "clamp" guide on a circular saw that you can just clamp onto it at that 2" mark. Clamp it on, butt your saw up...and rip.
I agree it would definitely make life easier for carpenters
Thanks for the help
no thank you for watching
40 Year carpenter showed that 15 years ago he had all his fingers and I have all mine
You don’t know how refreshing it is to hear from somebody like you. Usually the only comments I get are either negative or from those people who are scared of their own shadow so to hear from somebody that uses some of my tips learned from me or not really does make me want to keep making videos. Thanks for watching
I will never use my finger that close to a blade
I have played multiple stringed instruments from childhood
Don’t want to lose any
This trick is not for everyone but thanks for watching
That assumes the board is straight. Some of mine aren't.
Not really…. Your going to get a parallel cut to the end of the board so if your trying to rip some two inches it will stay two inches the entire length of the board then you can straighten the board when you install it especially if it’s for a deck
Yikes 😮
true but it works
why not use the circular saw guide to line it up at 2inches and save your fingers...
You can but the point is to keep your cut straight a lot of the people watching may not have enough strength in just one hand to hold the saw straight or may not use a saw daily. I keep getting comments about saving fingers, circular saws spin counter clockwise when looking at the blade therefore they don’t jump forwards when binding up they jump back away from your fingers.... personally I don’t worry about running a saw in this fashion but if I did have a concern it would be more for a leg than a finger just saying anyways thanks for watching
This is not a safe method for beginner DIYers! Fast is never a safe option unless you’re experienced with handling this tool.
Maybe, maybe not I also agree that before trying to do anything quicker you should be experienced with any tool at a slow rate
People please do use clamps at the very least. Anyone paying attention can see it looked so easy because he wasn't actually making a cut.
No it looked it because of the 18 years of experience but if your not comfortable doing it my way I agree use a clamp never do something your uncomfortable with
Okay
Alright be honest. Who lost a finger trying this? ✋
🤫
Too dangerous for the average DYI strictly my opinion 🥸🥸🥸🥸🥸
I disagree because the saw if put in a bind will shoot backwards away from the hand but that’s the great part about opinions we can all have one either way thanks for watching
I'm not saying this isn't effective, I just don't trust myself enough to put my hand there. Maybe someday, if I'm in a real pinch, I'll have the guts to give it a shot.
Too bad humans aren’t designed very well. If we had lizard DNA we could just grow back a finger or arm if it got cut off. When you think about it there are countless other species with better eyesight, speed, smell and so on. Maybe in another million years humans will develop the eyesight of a housefly.
well don't try something your not comfortable with and like you said this is used as a time saver or in a pinch like I said in the videos this in not for finish carpentry but for it can save a lot of time in a pinch
one slip and it's hospital time!
If you consider that “dangerous”, you need to stay indoors with a warm bottle of milk and a blanket.
man it is so refreshing to see there are some of us left. I mean if people are so scared don't try, it go find a page that does something you are comfortable with
@@tjhughes7740 lol you little rebel you
One slip with ANYTHING and its hospital time. Congratulations you just figured out how accidents work. Describe how eating works next time. I think we'd all be intrigued.
Use a band saw.
We're building a fence on a large property and it sucks running back to the table saw for ripping at times. Forgot about this technique. Thanks! I imagine Nestor would have safety rage if he saw me making cross cuts over my shoe. Lol. Well handled. Just wish you had a mag77 skilsaw linked instead. Be safe friend.
Thanks and yes this has definitely helped me a lot over the years. I’m glad I could refresh your memory thanks for watching
Been doing that for 30 years
And still have all your fingers
I'm afraid I'll get a splinter that way.
lol it does happen from time to time but you could wear a glove or put electrical tape around your pointer finger thanks for watching
Thanks so much. I'll likely use a clamp but this was so quick and simple!
hey if that makes you feel more comfortable and can still get the job done I say get it and im glad I could help
Using a pinch could cause a splinter or a cutting accident with your digits. Why not just clamp a small block of scrap at the 2 inch mark? That said, the idea of the video is pretty clever. As a noob woidworker, I always like these tips and tricks vids. Maybe I will sub and stay around a bit . Thanks!
True you could use a clamp but it’s supposed to be quick. I work in construction and that means time is money so lost time finding a clamp equals lost money to me but as a hobbyist woodworker you may have a little more time. Anyways thanks for watching
@KeepMakinDust Time lost replacing a finger equals a whole lot more lost money though bud, stay safe out there.
@@sotetsotetsotetsotetsotet2379 well I’ve been in the business for 20 years now and can still count to ten without taking my boots off so I think I’m doing something right but I’ve told everyone that’s made a comment like yours the same thing if your not confident you have the skills to use this trick then don’t I would rather someone be safe.
@@keepmakindust Complacency is the mother of disaster
@@sotetsotetsotetsotetsotet2379 it's like he is saying I have been driving 20 years without an accident so let me remove the car seat belt and airbags
There should be a better way. Adding finger there is too dangerous.
No doubt there is a better way but you are obliviously not a carpenter by trade you could take the board get out your table saw set it to the width you want a rip it but the name of this video is rip a board quickly. I guess really what I’m asking is why even comment if you don’t want to do it this way, don’t. Go ahead and make a video of the better way you comment about, then the folks that’s scared to use the method I’ve shown can use your method and life will be all rainbows and lollipops for y’all. Thanks for watching
Thanks for this, saved me from buying a table saw
well its hard to replace a good table saw but this little trick can definitely same you some time
So your teaching people to run their fingers ‘in front’ of a circular saw blade whilst it’s running cutting through timber ?
Not directly in front of the blade but yes. If you have a lot of experience with circular saws you know that when a the blade binds it jumps backwards not forwards
I think a couple of those brass stair guages clamped on the base would work if the base were flat....
They would and if I’m making multiple of the same cuts this way I have actually used stair gauges but I don’t usually keep them in my tool pouch
I keep thinking you're saying keep making death shots. And then you put your fingers in front of a running saw! for the length of your board!
I think I would slip once the saw is out in front of me and my weight is a little out of balance... So...
This method is not for everyone I’m comfortable running a circular saw after all these years of doing so. I also know when a circular saw binds it doesn’t jump forward it goes backward but like I said it’s not for everyone if your concerned about your fingers a good substitute is stair gauges you can do the same thing with them as you do with your fingers it just takes a little more time. If I wasn’t at work I would use a table saw it’s just in my line of work time is money and this saves me the time to go to the trailer find the gauges get back get them set up and hope they don’t move while I’m cutting I trust my hands more
But thanks for your comment and thanks for watching
Wouldn't it be safer to just put a small clamp at that point? A finger seems dangerous!
Good idea, nevertheless!
Safer? Probably so but I work construction for a living and to me time is money some I would have to go to the tool trailer and then try to find the clamp because it’s not a common tool in my belt then come back set it up and make a cut. I could make the cut in the time it took to go to the trailer plus the title of the video is rip a board quickly I can’t think of a much quicker way
@@keepmakindust makes sense, but I on the other hand am a DIYer. Regardless, it helped me rip a fence picket, so I appreciate it!
Clever - must adjust your blade
yea if you want to keep it out of your sawhorses
Man I am contracting a dock job and this trick saved my ass haha about to head out to the jobsite and use it. Thanks man I liked and subscribed.

no thank you and I appreciate you hope this tip helps you in the future
Man u a living legend
thanks but Im just another carpenter out here trying to share some tips from my trade but I appreciate the comment and hope you keep watching and look forward to see Donald in the comments
Hell yeah, my boss is an old school framer and told me to use the "pinch method" couldn't figure out what he was talking about until I saw this. Super helpful man
Thanks for watching and I hope you use this method I’m afraid I’m part of the old school guys because I use this regularly in fact I used it today but there is a lot of people out there that send some pretty harsh judgement because they believe it’s “ not safe” and hat happens to the carpenters walking top plates and using this method those guys that were fearless and though…. I guess a lot of the world is getting soft but if you keep watching I can promise there is one carpenter that won’t change
Hi. Can you make a video on how to cut a 3/4 inch wide piece of wood in half? I have pieces that are 7.5 inches long, 1.5 inches wide and 3/4 inches thick. I want to cut the 3/4 side in half for a project. Can’t figure out how to do it.
Good evening Mrs Ferris I can make you a video I will try to have it up this week
is anything keeping the board from flying when it's being cut?
The weight of the board. I wouldn’t recommend this on small pieces
Thanks keep posting stuff like this I subribed
Thanks for watching and that’s the plan I hope to keep putting out content people can use
Dam! That’s badass. I’m fixing to try that right now and make some dust! 👍🏽😎

Yep, that tip right there is worth my subscription, and you got it, brother!
Man I sure do appreciate it I hope I can’t keep you interested lol

Great way to lose a finger or hand.
So don’t do it… problem solved. I’m so tired of hearing this comment from people who don’t know how a circular saw works if it catches in a nail or piece of wood it goes backwards not forwards. So unless your hand is behind the blade you shouldn’t have anything to worry about with that said your not subscribed to me so you must not watch my videos and therefore are not looking to gain any skills or knowledge so why even comment?
Please let us know where that lovely accent comes from.
I don’t know how lovely it is but I’m from a small town in northwest Florida
@@keepmakindust It sounds nice for real.
Genius!
Thanks!! Hope you get a chance to use this little trick soon
Nice trick!
Thanks hope you can put it in your toolbox for your next build lol
As a lefty I prefer a blade right sidewinder saw where the blade is closer to me. This would be difficult for me but I could get around it using my old skil worm drive saw..
One thing that sucks using a sidewinder as a lefty with blade right is all the sawdust spits out on the side im on.
Oh yea I bet that does suck it’s like cutting posts off above your head somehow all the sawdust ends up in your eyes lol
Slide your finger along side the board and get a sliver in your finger.😢
Then get a table saw, wont have to worry about fingers or slivers
The point of the video is quick rip with a circular saw….. otherwise the name of the video would be how to rip with a table saw and probably wouldn’t get many views….
