Is riding the FAMOUS Mulholland Highway worth it? - A.K.A. The Snake

- Looking to ride the famous Mulholland Highway, aka. "The Snake"?
If you're looking for the ultimate motorcycle experience, look no further. In fact, you can easily make a California day of it by stopping for coffee and breakfast at the Rock Store, then go ride and chat atop "The Snake" on Mulholland Hwy, and then finish off with lunch at Neptune's Net in Malibu, on the also famous, Pacific Coastal Highway. That's a pretty perfect day if you ask me.
I was hoping to meet RNickey Mouse, but he wasn't around when I was there, but there were all types of motorcycles. This scenic road is a dream for all motorcycles, sports cars and cyclists. Situated just outside of Los Angeles, in Malibu, California, up on Mulholland Highway. The views lend themselves to great photography.

Wouldn't hurt to mention mulholland drive was built specifically as a road for car enthusiasts to pleasure drive on
This is Mulholland Hwy not Mulholland Dr
It's also like that here in Lisbon . We gather in several spots like Cabo da Roca in Sintra and Cabo Espichel on Sunday mornings.
Not even close to being the best motorcycle road in California, Its a great road and Cali has many, but definitely not the best, Yes its well known but so is Hwy 36, 140 miles of twist's tight turns, sweepers elevation changes and beautiful scenery. Cali has it all and put the Tail of the dragon a shame.
Great roads right above my hose in the San Gabriel mountains try NEWCOMBE'S RANCH. Take the loop to Wrightwood great roads
@@zootszabo2415 have ridden in San Gabriel mountains it's amazing.
@@TheRoute. I live right below Wrightwood its great riding you betcha
Palomar mtn and Ortega hwy beats Mulholland as far as bikes go.
@@Vinrx7 Ortega Hwy sucks. That thing is boring. The best thing about it is the BBQ ribs sold at the Lookout Roadhouse restaurant. Those things are worth the ride. That is the only reason I have ridden that road.
Canadian here, I rode my Goldwing from Toronto to here and did the snake, was very much fun. I can ride pretty competently (39 years) and scrapin a peg here and there was normal. I have done the Dragon out East as well, both worthy rides people. I also enjoyed Neptune's Net as well. Have been here twice on different trips. Very much recommended. Enjoy.
In Italy we have millions of that. And a better landscapes around!
jack wiski in China its better than italy👍
@@naisaechao9598 I think so, but if you don't take offense I would wait to go to China, unfortunately! :(
Even if Italy is the 1st Country in the world (after China) with more dead for Coronavirus!
Lol....and no one goes to italy to ride bikes....they all come to california malibu you fucker....FUCK YOUR ITALY...YOU CAN ONLY RIDE ITALY 6 MONTHS MAYBE....LOL.....NOTHING COMPARES TO CALIFORNIA...FUCK OFF
Italy is awesome. I want to visit stelvio pass someday.
Jack pero' in italia su ste strade di montagna so orribili specialmente quando piove troppe buche in California son piu curate te lo dico perche abito qui......
I love this vlog ! I'm french and with your video , i've the feeling to travel with you on this famous road !!
Salut! Merci beaucoup et j'espère de te voir a la prochaine video! 👍🏼😄
Only rode that about 1000 times! lol...thanks for the cool memories.
Rode the Snake on my Triumph Speed Triple for yrs till they closed it forever! It was great while it lasted!
For two years at the Rock Store I was king of the mountain at the Snake, meaning I could ride faster from the Rock Store up to the viewpoint or back, and I did it all on a super-lightweight RD-400cc Yamaha, and later on a TZr-250 Yamaha. I'm now 64 and living in Seattle on a tiny island called Mercer Island and just saw your great video. I know every inch of that road (and I've walked it several times), and from the looks of it, it has not changed a tiny bit. If you want to be the fastest in that tiny stretch of road, you need slicks, the bike should not weigh over 250-lbs and at least 60 hp that's naturally aspirated. The acceleration, without question, needs to be creamy smooth, wireless electronic throttle has no place there. Back in the 80s I raced 400cc production and just loved going to the Rock Store when there was no racing on my schedule. God I loved that place, and it has not changed a bit. GREAT VIDEO DownieLive... TKS Dan
There are a lot of mountain roads in Socal that go further with multiple turns like this. I would recommend Camp Rock Road from the Antelope Valley at sea-level up to mile-high Big Bear in about 25 minutes. Another great road is Hwy 74 from Palm Desert to Mountain Center in the San Jacinto mts, and the Ortega Hwy from Lake Elsinore to San Juan Capistrano.
The Black Forest in southern Germany has a network of twisty roads set in a pine forest. Very popular with bikers.
My home route is the Black Forrest, less sun than California, but funny roads, but speed limits are increasing. Drive safe and not too loud. If you are fast, be quiet and have fun, but do not allure the race management😉 with your loudness.
North Arizona mountains heading to yarnell and Prescott has waaayy more curves and what I now know as something called a slingshot curve. Amazing. Riders definitely should get that beautiful experience of those mountains.
Not to mention 89A Oak Creek Canyon From Sedona to Flagstaff
Definitely some great videos as always, and 100k subs to 1mill subs will feel like it happened over night soon enough.
Thanks man. We’ll get there.
Love your videos, you deserve more views!
Thanks. We’ll get there one day.
The edits on the snake are dope Mikey Mike
Thanks buddy!
I love the way the engine sounds accentuate the music.
In the eighties we called that turn target rock. The bolder on the bottom of that turn had a target painted on it.
Mad jealous! Such a fantastic spot to ride, nice job on the video!
Thanks buddy. We should collab sometime
Well, then you have not seen much of the world.. There are spots thousands of times better... And, no American amateur riders.. And no American costumed criminals! (cops)
This is every road in New Zealand 😂
Japan has tighter corners depending on which mountain pass.
Lived in West LA 1985-1988, almost every weekend was spent at the Rock Store, doing passes "at the top of the hill" (never heard it called The Snake back then). I'd been seeing Jay Leno there for 6 months, first-name basis, before I realized who he was! (didn't own a TV then). Only crashed at the Snake once when my throttle cable stuck 😁
This is the longest selfie I ever had to skip through. There were flickering glimpses of motorcycles flashing across the screen but nothing to actual watch unless you like looking at the selfies of Downie.
Thanks for the tour. I love the non bike douchie positive vibe. And I'm impressed that you can have your girlfriend come out with you. My wife would never.
I have promised myself that I will never ride that road. It seems like some kind of Bermuda triangle type of thing. I love my monster too much.
It's been a long time since I wheelied my new KH400 (low bars, Konis, Dencos, etc.) by the Rock Store.
Great video! I am traveling to California in November and I will most definitely be visiting these spots! Especially a place where The Fast & Furious was filmed
Yes Ashlyn!
Neptunes Net is a great place to people watch and take photos but the food is overpriced and mediocre. A really good place to eat that has good food and reasonable prices is not too far away at the Camarillo Airport called the Way Point Cafe...flic.kr/p/sRy8qr
Ahhhhh nice. Because I totally agree about the food and price. But hard to beat the location.
Thanks for the recommendation.
@@DownieLive Yes Neptunes is in a great location. So i always stop by. Then go to the Way Point Cafe and eat on the patio and watch the planes and helicopters come and go...flic.kr/p/sz5Fiz Another great road is CA-2 Angels Crest HWY. Beautiful Views. flic.kr/p/24xcVXN
Used to ride this every weekend.
My riding buddies and many riders, we have a saying that goes like this: “if you want to ride slow, go to mulholland highway, if you want to ride fast, come out ride to Angeles Crest Highway.”
Ohhhh. I’ll have to add that to the list! Thanks
It takes more skill to ride the snake tho...
Been riding her since 1965 before the big hoopla at the Rock Store lol
I was just at Leo Carrillo campsite..Mulholland was closed at PCH..do u know why? Thanks!
I have only only driven a car on Mullholland at night, in my brother's GTI, after we had replace the stock struts. It was a thrill drving a manual, but it would have been nice to take his GS500 out before he sold it.
2:26 is my favourite!
Very Awesome video and it is on my Bucket list to ride being a East Coast Boy
👍🏼 it should be!
And maybe run into Jay Leno LOL
In Ca this is a very short ride for show , a better ride is from 101 to 23 N through Fillmore up highway 33 near the end either rout right through Frazier park to go back down 5 south or left to the PCH south back to wherever you came from figure the rest out on your own, your welcome.
The first time I road from pch to the rock store was crazy, on a vstar650, with my girlfriend on the back....
Only weeks after getting my first bike. We were with a group of cruisers but I was the least experienced with the slowest bike. But it was great.
That sounds like such an awesome riding experience!
@@DownieLive obviously since I still remember it fondly 8+yes latter even though that girlfriend is now an exwife. Need to get back on two wheels again... Honda Grom?
Hey, the grom looks like a super fun way to get back into the sport.
I've chased the guy on the loud FZ09 with my FZ09.... couldn't keep up...
Coffee is a fundamental part of any atmosphere. No excuse for bad coffee.
Let’s head back for a ride when the boarders open up Mike!
Deal!
Hi, a nice video, one nice corner, great bikes. In the European alps there are thousands of twisty roads and corners. And the heaven for bikers is Corse. Try it out. Best regards, Hans
Hans! Thank you for the recommendation. I’ve heard of it and I’ll look it up when I get there.
Is the snake open now after the fire incident ?
Aren't there a bunch of crash and burn vids at that corner?
Aonde está localizado esse lugar?
Neptune's Net is also in GTA 5!
I like Cali. 1 the coastal hwy from LA to Cresent City.
Dragons Tail is awesome too.
Where’s the start to finish if you don’t mind me asking? Thanks!
there used to be lots of places like this in Colorado, where I live, stretches of road that are fun to drive/ride that never really got much use otherwise. but unlike CA, the cops started passing out tickets to everyone who were driving the road "without purpose" and they shut all those spots down. even if you weren't speeding or violating any traffic laws, if they saw you pass by they would take note of you, and if they saw you again they would ticket you for "racing" (because obviously driving back and forth doing the speedlimit is the same thing as racing...) no fun aloud. some police departments crack down on the dumbest things.
now a days all the cruising spots around here are VERY local, and VERY well kept secrets. the moment the police get informed, the spot is burned, and the community moves elsewhere. it's not a racing scene, its just car guys being car guys, and bike guys being bike guys. in fact! usually if people start showboating, speeding, or racing they get yelled at by the community of drivers because that's a fast way to getting the spot burned for everyone by law enforcement.
wish it didn't have to be so secretive. but... some cops around here like to bend the rules. unfortunate. you won't find these locations online, anywhere. it's a "if you know you know." situation these days.
Rock Store vs Cook’s Corner. Which one is your pick ?
Both lame. Newcomb’s Ranch.!
What’s the bike at 2:37??
I used to drive there all the time
Went today 7-10-2023 still closed idk why I miss driving this road
Haha the coffee is pretty bad 😛
If anyone actually thinks that that is the best in Cali, they don’t ride much nor know Cali.
Scary road
im from california i miss the mulholland roads i recently moved to colorado anyone know any roads out here in colorado that are like mulholland ? thx in advance
Winter park run
This is the most overhyped road ever. I will say it’s great setup for videography with that ledge overlooking down under.
Heavy concentration on a single turn. Is there no more? You looked like you were having a great time.
Of course there are more corners. The whole road is narrow and winding, but everyone does laps of this one corner. They go down about 4 corners further, turn around, and come back up, just running laps of this corner. As much as I was showing the road and the riders, it was the whole scene at that one corner, where there is finally room to pull over and check out the other bikes etc. Trust me, this is where the action is.
So is it like that one corner or what? How long is that "Snake"?
The whole highway is long, but this is the iconic corner where everyone comes to show off. The only pull out in the area is just above it where people meet.
@@DownieLive ok, good. Have to go there when I'm coming to LA in september!
not the most iconic, just made infamous by rnickeymouse. many other roads in socal that are way better than mulholland
They might be better roads, but are they more recognizable?
Bro come to nepal we have billions of these roads😂😂hahah lol i laughed when you were excited about these roads😂😂
Is that a Vancouver Canadians hat on Nicole, Downie? Nat Bailey is a great park for a ballgame
Edit: Getting Nicole's name right
YEP! We live in Vancouver!
Sucks it’s temporarily closed rn
when will it be opened again?
Oh Mulholland Hwy, I thought this was Mulholland Dr.
We cycled to Neptune’s Net through Malibu Canyon !!!
It would be really fun going downhill.
Yes and we cycled through a tunnel with cars right behind us !!!!
Me too.
THE SNAKE IS MY 2ND HOME....WE NEED THAT SHIT OPEN AGAIN GODDAMNIT
“Ride the Snake.” - Jim Morrison
How i would love to ride my Kawasaki Versys 1000 GT on that road.
Come to Alps or Pyrenees and ride roads like that and better for days on end, and no police and passing allowed, and skilled bikers, and coffee is real, and food is real :)
Sounds perfect! Thank you for the invite! I hope to get out there one day soon!
Yeah.. Nothing compares to alps!
Ohhh I wish I could go ride in the Alps!
@@DownieLive you can.. Just bring money, gold or silver and I can set up bikes with insurance / cheap places to stay.. And some of the most amazing motorcycle tours on earth! This is just 1 of the hundreds of canyons we have in Cali, and I can name way better ones than the snake.
Not even open there rn the rock store is but u can't go up anymore 😔
U can go around but then it's closed again after decker but just turn right up yerba Buena it'll take u right to Neptune's

Amazing! It’s worth a visit!
DownieLive have you got a walk around video of your bike? I also ride a Triumph but it’s a Daytona 675R 2013
No, I don’t.
I’ll have to do that in the summer when I bring it out again.
DownieLive yeah that would be cool 😎 id definitely like to take a look at it 👍🏻
This section of Mulholland is still closed due to damage from Woosley Fire.
Is the “ snake” closed? Shows on google maps that its shutdown?
Huh. That’s news to me. 🤷🏼♂️
It’s closed bc after the fire last year there was heavy rain and it washed out most of the road.

No way! That’s too funny!
Great day for a ride!
I viewed a few Videos from rider riding passes like beartooth pass or The Zion Park Road or something like this.
The roads looks like a Autobahn for big rigs or fullsize Tourist Buses.

Seriously? That one turn? 😂
Police loveee to work there, they are so nice
The Tail of the Dragon beats it ..any day
Like
Lived in L.A. my whole life. The riding scene by punks at the Rock Store is obnoxious and destructive. There's so many other places I'd rather go ride, this tiny portion of Mulholland isn't one of them.
Rip mullholland
Latigo ,Ensenal canyon , 23 deckers , mullholland west are better , snake just a meetup rest spot
most iconic in north america? someone hasn't heard of deal's gap
No, I guess I haven’t, which I guess means it’s not as iconic😉
@@DownieLive fair enough lol but there are some others you probably want to check out. Have a look at Deal's Gap aka tail of the dragon. The "good" section is 318 turns in 9 miles, spans over 800 feet of elevation. Overall I think it's around 30 very epic miles in total. It's WORLD famous.
@@primedirective00 Sounds awesome. I have heard of the dragon!
It’s only popular cause it’s one of the only places like that in California. Look up the tail of the dragon in deals gap it’s minutes from where I live. Something like 315 curves in 10 miles it’s a lot better than that lol
It’s not Malibu silly. It’s Agoura.

poser heaven.
Yeah, in a police state, one tends to see lots of police... I can ride for a month without seeing a cop in Switzerland ;-)
Switzerland is a non police state... Sad how Americans think they're free but can't put 2 and two together.
I was in that area a few weeks ago, and really there were very few police and in the areas I drove, California to Nashville, to New Orleans and back to California, and speed limits are mostly just a suggestion. Come to Australia if you want to see heavy police presence on the roads.
I've lived in Nashville, San Diego, Salt Lake City and Los Angeles.
In Nashville, there was police EVERYWHERE and they will stop you for EVERYTHING.
In San Diego, I tended to see them late around party areas. They usually had checkpoints setup.
In Salt Lake, I didn't see them that often, and they were very friendly.
In Los Angeles I rarely see them, and to be honest, you have to be straight up murdering someone for them to stop you.
I was once riding in a giant group of around 100 bikes and some of them were doing wheelies. We went past a few cops and they acted like we weren't even there....
cattleNhay (aka Eggman) /Yawn, another know it all expert. Next!
