I actually think this lose will be good for the Zags as crazy as that sounds. It keeps them humble and hungry.
The Gaels played one of the best defensive games I've seen in a long long time! And they just made life a little more uneasy and difficult for those hanging on the bubble! But Zags still will get a #1 too much balance below them to drop to the 2 line plus committee will credit their win over fully healthy Duke! No one else did that!

Yes Gonzaga did lose to UNC and Tennessee but they were high scoring games I was crediting St Mary's bec of holding the Zags to 47 pts in a half court style game

BYU guy here, so I'm on the outside looking in, so i can be objective about this...look, ya can't take anything away from St. Mary's, they played inspired basketball and some of those shots had no business going in. BUT look what losing does for GU. They beat SMC by 14 on the road and by 48 at home. 48. SMC didn't SCORE 48 in that game. Getting SMC into the dance puts in a team they know they can trash if they meet later, and closes the door on someone else. Hey, if I'd gone 18-0 in conference I'd want as many of those teams in the dance as I could get.
NO, GU didn't throw this game, and SMC deserved it, but losing may have done more good for GU than the loss did.
Gonzaga did thorough the game. And the refs helped I think Gonzaga only got like one call and all the rest of the calls went to St Marys.
Stellar win for the Gaels. Yes, I think it's great that there are 2 WCC teams representing, and I agree that if the Zags meet St. Mary's in the tourney your logic will prove sound. Coach Few is one of the best ever, and he will help the Zags wash this loss, and make a tourney run, possibly historic in nature.
They didn't throw this game though. Coach Few would never allow it, and to believe the players would do it, completely disregards the coaches abilities.
Bob your exactly right! St Mary's knew they had to have this game and defensively they brought A+ effort! Sean I know your a Zags fan so u should understand first hand already March brings out the best in the little guy! If u remember Gonzaga '99 then don't discredit what St Mary's did as the underdog in this matchup! Plus St Mary's has had a solid program for awhile now they've proven they can play with anyone! So for those big college hoops fans, does St Mary's get a large bid if they had lost this conference final with them being 22-11? And regarding Gonzaga, I heard that the only question before this game, is is they were going to be the #1 overall seed in the entire 2019 NCAA Tournament. Thanks in advance guys.
American Giant 100 here goes - NO on St Mary's getting an at-large; West Coast would have only been a one bid league (was down this season due to too many teams w double digit losses) St Mary's had to win and they did! Yes, Zags were overall #1 but not now although they'll still get a #1 in my mind bec of the balance and competition under them they'll rule each other out as champ week progresses! Zags and Virginia have solid #1's, but there's at least five teams going after the other two slots (Duke, Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee and winner of Big Ten if it's Michigan or Mich State only)! We could have an elimination for a #1 on Friday if Duke and Carolina meet up again

John N, this game is the WCC final, where Gonzaga and St.Mary's were ranked 1 and 2 seeds. Gonzaga is also ranked no.1 college team in the country. It's a massive upset because St.Mary's weren't expected to qualify for the NCAA tournament before this game. Now they automatically qualify.

Gonzaga has very high statistics in every aspect in college ball. Do i think they need a better conference so they dont blow everyone out? Uh fuck yea! I say a lot about nevada being extremely underwhelming and heavily ranked in the polls when they have no conference or SOS, and they reached as high as number 7 in the polls. Gonzaga will be a #1 seed whether people like it or not coming from a horrible conference... they're 1-2 against ranked teams. I just believe if you're gonna have a powerhouse team that has won the majority of conference titles they need to be placed in a conference where there is some competition to be had. Nobody wants to watch a game where your team is killing the other team by 40 at halftime. Just boring.

Very disappointed with some of the comments which seem to undercut St Mary's accomplishment instead of remembering that this time of yr is called March Madness for a reason and this isn't the first rodeo of the Gaels upsetting the Zags! Upsets should b taken in with more value especially after we had a #16 take down a #1 last yr!
