My Xbox Series S console has been randomly shutting itself down, possibly due to overheating.
In this video I disassemble the console, clear all the dust from the insides and then reassemble. So far so good!
It's quite easy to do, surprisingly so. Even all the different screws are colour coded!

On the sides of the PSU, you will see small arrows; if you push them, you will be able to open it; make sure you check that the power socket is put back between the two holes as you put the two halves together.
Good advice, thank you!
From someone who just tore down my ps5 it is impressive how Microsoft designed the series s. So simple and well thought out. Now to tackle my series s and then series x for deep cleaning and repaste.
Good luck! And yes it really is a beautifully designed machine
dude you're a life saver, my xbox was having this exact problem with shutting down from apparent overheating and cleaning all the dust out did the trick. thank you so much for this simple tutorial brother, saved me from probably buying another one if this problem persisted
So happy to hear that. I appreciate you getting in touch to tell me!
After you turn it back on would it sometimes turn off again straight after?
I dropped a flower pot next to my daughter's xbox and soil went all inside! I vacuumed out all I could, but when she tried to play, it kept cutting off and then a message about the fan and overheating popped up. THANK YOU so much for this video!!!
I am about to get started, so i will let you know how it goes!
I had to go buy a T8 bit ($6 for a set of small bits at Walmart), but I'm glad I have them all now!
A few seconds of hairdryer heat DID make the stickers easier to come off, too.
It's amazing some of the situations we find ourselves in 😂 good luck and I hope it all gets fixed okay 🤞
Great step by step. I suspected dust in my 2nd hand one which revved up like a hairdryer instead of the famed 'whisper quiet'. The filth and stinking grit I found inside convinced me I was right. Must have been on the floor with 10 dogs and junkies chain-smoking around it for the 2 years before it was passed to Cash Converters - who by the by simply must have switched it on and wiped the data.
Ewwwww I'm glad you managed to save it!
@@JoeBleeps I should have kept it in its gross condition and auctioned it off to UA-cam console cleaners & repairers
@@imagecarpenter 😂😂😂
Even though there was no fault yet… ur video did inspired me to clean up my box. Thank you
Here's hoping it keeps it from any potential future issues!
@@JoeBleeps Sure 🥰
I really appreciate your thoroughness in showing the steps to get there and reversing those steps. You’re very underrated, my friend. Keep showing us how to clean these properly and safely.👍👍👍👍👍 you do us do-it-ourself ninjas justice. I Look forward to the next tutorial!
Thank you so, so much. That really means a lot 🙏
I just want to take this time and say thank you so much, my xbox was not really turning off but it was overheating like crazy! And your video solved my problem 100%, and my xbox is up and running and there is no more heat! Thanks For The Video!
@@AntonshiTechnologyGuy09 really good to hear! Thanks for reporting back 😀
hey man! this is my first breakdown of a console and it was done with ease thanks to sucha thorough video by urself! thanks so much seriously! a legend😎
Glad it helped! Thanks for the feedback 🙂
Will it still work afterwards
Thanks for this g!! I normally try to not open my system up myself😂 but you made this so simple that I had to try. It was a fun experience taking it apart and putting it back together
Thanks im about to buy one for $60 bucks with the same issue, i stumbled upon this video to see what the problem really is and its worth the purchase, thanks.
I hope you get it working!
I appreciate this so much. I just bought 1, and it was roach infested. Got it cleaned asap. Now I can sleep.
Good work!
Bro u got me as new suscriber! cuz you're so amazing! thanks a lot for all the hard work you do!
Thank you so much!
Thanks champ. Very easy step by step instructions. Awesome vid!
Thanks so much for your feedback! I'm glad this is proving useful
Thank you it works I follow the steps so much dust inside it works no more shutdowns
Glad to hear that!
Thanks for this, Gonna pick up the screwdrivers and some compressed air. Mine isn't overheating, just the fans slightly louder than it used to be.
It should definitely help make it quieter. Good luck!
thought i give this a try and it fixed my xbox shuting down problem so thanks
That's great news
Just cleaned it out today after wondering why it made so much noise when booting games up and turns out the amount of dust was the issue and this guide help me clean it all and there’s not a single noise that I thought I broke the fan but nope it was just so dirty thanks
Hahaha! Happy quiet gaming
My xbox series s sounded like it was gonna take off because of how loud it was
Big thank you to your video never took a console like this apart befor but your video was great was nerves the whole time
I hope it was worth it!
You beauty narell ❤❤ Mate ur easy to understand tutorial is bloody crikey! We appreciate your help and support 🙏 😊
Thank you!
Delighted to have come across this. I turned on my Xbox to play some halo tonight and can’t play more than a few minutes without the console shutting down. Unfortunately I’ve no T-8 bit so I’ll have to get that tomorrow. But I’ll definitely be using this vid to help with my cleaning. Hope it helps!
I hope it helps too!
Did it work??
@@otkanimation5453 yes. My Xbox has overheated twice from my son leaving it on in a closed drawer. Both times I’ve taken it apart and cleaned it following this video and it’s worked fine after
My gosh. This worked for me. I barely use my Xbox S but I was so excited to play hellblade 2- it kept on restarting about every 5 minutes! I opened it up and it was t too dusty but definitely could have used a cleaning. Thank you so much!
That's great! I saw that game was out. Do I need to play Hellblade first or can you jump straight in on 2?
@@JoeBleepsdefinitely play the first one, hope you didn't play 2 yet lmao
@@williewilson2250 I haven't yet!
That’s surprising. It didn’t look like enough dust to cause random shutdowns. Seems like their might be a bigger issue somewhere.
I thought the same but it definitely seems better. I've also put it in a more well ventilated spot, so that will definitely help too. If it starts having issues again I'll investigate further.
@@JoeBleepshey any news on it? Mine keeps saying overheating after playing a game for 2min
@@foshizelmc7412 it's been fine since I did this, not had any overheating issues since
Most problems is the liquid metal and soldering.
Definitely mostly an Xbox issue I have a temp gauge on my Xbox and whenever I run a game it can reach up to 120 or 150 pretty easily. It could be that the fans not working I don’t know, but when I did look inside and took apart everything like in the video there was no dust whatsoever.
Yes, thank you for this! This video has given me the confidence to clean my series s. Thank you so much!!
Good luck! Mine is still going strong
Yo man thank you so much for you step by step dissemble and reassemble, cause mannn had my Xbox for probably over 3.5 years would clean it from the outside but man something told me to DEEP CLEAN it and man the amount of dust that can get in a Xbox is crazy but now that mf is now 😁
I'm glad it helped!
Thank you for this disassembly video. My Xbox was running very warm. It was about as dusty as yours maybe a little more. I wouldn't have tried to take it apart without your easy looking video.
I'm glad it helped and I'm glad it made the job feel less intimidating!
Thanks so much for this video I've had my S for 2 years and its been making so much noise on X|S games so finally decided to clean it
I hope it's better now
@@JoeBleeps Yep it's so quiet now it's amazing
@@mrc0a124 brilliant. And less likely to overheat too!
you can have my subscription for your excellent organization skills. shelf to the right with jars underneath classic dad shop!
Hahaaa right? 😁 But full of DS Lite buttons instead of rusty screws
Subscribed ! thanks for the video, are you gonna make one about changing the thermal paste ? I think this would help a lot, i have seen other videos where the temperature gets better because they use a better paste.
Thank you! If this machine gets bad again I will definitely do that
Hello, my friend, I am an Arab from the Gulf. A beautiful explanation from you is worth following up. Thank you.
Thank you
my cat peed on my xbox. luckily the fans didn't allow it to go deeper. thx for this video i was able to clean my xbox easily
I bet that wasn't a fun job! 😅
My cat fur is in it
Thank you for the video! It helped a lot 👍🏻
Fantastic! You're welcome
The only other reason that it would overheat is if you leave the sleep option on it will be in power options you can just turn it off if you don't know why that usually works for me and on my series x it kept overheating and that was why
That's a really good point. Thanks for the suggestion. I've got the Series X set up now and I have the low power consumption settings on there too.
Your video 100 percent helped me. Thank you
Brilliant. You're welcome!
If your Xbox doesn’t need dust cleaning and the fan won’t turn on makes sure to restart the console from settings, then wait and download a game till it forcefully turns on so you can then get rid of it for something else.
This helps thanks Joe
Excellent!
I’ve done all the same things and even replaced the thermal paste. Still overheated 6 hours later. Traded it in to GameStop for a new one.
That really sounds so frustrating
Mine was a shower of dust in 1 year, you saved me probably
Haha I hope so!
Great video bro u revived my dead xbox
Fantastic news! Good job

My xbox series s keeps shuting off and it says its overheating but its cold, why?
Any advice? Mine worked fine until my kid was sick on it. It was cleaned. Now it won’t power on or anything I’ve tried different power cables and am going to follow this video to take it apart. Was wondering if you thought it could be anything else before I clean the fan
Yo joe appreciate this , on my Xbox I could’ve played every game but cod and like games that runs on a lot , it would cut off out of nowhere , but followed u step by step and cleaned df out it😅😂 it was so dirty to where the vent holes was clogged with dust , i was wondering y my Xbox sound like fuckin King Kong wen I turn it on lol , but everything is good now , only thing is I didn’t unplugged fan cause my wasn’t unplugging so I cleaned around it but thanks!!!!
I hope it's running better now!
Mine goes really loud and decently hot whilst playing Fortnite warzone ect but when u close the games 30 seconds later cool and no noise is that normal
Bro. I dropped my xbox from like 5 feet off the ground. The stupid power button popped out of socket and got lost inside the freaking housing. Unfortunately its sort of broken but the xbox still works LOL. just the power button now doesnt fit snug like it used to :/
Lot of steps I haven’t cleaned a system since the Xbox one and the one already is so much readier to clean lol
I was surprised how easy this was to dismantle. A lot of other consoles feel like they are designed to make it as difficult and miserable as possible
Good to know. My Xbox series S just shut down for the first time after owning it for a year and half. The fan got really loud loading into a COD lobby, I got nervous and force quit the game and the Xbox flickered then shut off and went silent. Turned it on today tho and silent again so that’s good lol. I notice my Xbox gets loud when I switch between a new gen and old game too sometimes.
I was surprised how easy it was to disassemble actually. Worth a try.
@@JoeBleepsI never ended up trying. Fast forward a year later to now I took it apart yesterday for the first time after owning it for 2 and half years. My god was there dust/lint in a lot of the vent holes etc.
@@stevenbethel1351 I hope it helped giving it a clean
@@JoeBleeps she went from sounding like a lawn mower and over heating, to know you can’t even hear the fan at all and hasn’t got too hot when I touched it .
@@stevenbethel1351 much better!
Had a Xbox for many years these new ones seem to break down alot more then usually especially the controllers they should be more reliable not worst
It's such a powerful machine in such a compact form. It's little surprise it's prone to overheating! Mine has been much better since cleaning
I see you have a 3d printer, I designed a fan duct to pull more air of the front exhaust. It uses a USB powered 120mm fan plugged into a wall brick. My xbox stays significantly cooler than it did before. I posted it to thingiverse if you're interested.
That's really clever! I'll have a look later
It surprisingly works 👌
Great! I was surprised it made a difference too
Hey when I opened my xbox there was thing thing connected the two pieces, what do I do abour that?
What would cause mine to be slow at loading apps up or not load at all
I have a series s it freezes up and shutoffs with no warning other than overheating i dread taking it apart and clean it. But tomorrow ill attempt it the first time.
That sounds like exactly what mine was doing. Dismantle and clean, and then keep it in a well ventilated space when you use it in future 😊
Very helpful thank you
You're welcome!
So this is why my Xbox series S overheating thank you and now I know
Mine is still going strong after doing this. I keep it in a well ventilated space now
Cheers real helpful
Excellent! Thanks for the feedback
Awesome video 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you!
Thank you super helpful
You're welcome! I'm glad it helped
thank you so much it works now thanks mate
Great to hear!
I wonder, when i assemble it back, will it be better to not reattach bottom plate, but instead place it on aluminium plate for better cooling?
I think good ventilation is key
some of the screws im having trouble taking out like they are stuck
Have you got the right driver?
i think this is still the exact same fan as the original Xbox one. suprising
I guess it is the more budget friendly model. That is interesting though!
You should replace the thermal paste too
You're absolutely right. Next time, if I'm having any issues, that's job number 1
6:23 so you didn't change thermal paste, because you wanted to see if it stopped overheating just by cleaning the dust
Yeah like most things it's a process of elimination. For a relatively new console I'd generally be optimistic that the paste should still be okay in most cases. If that hadn't fixed the problem though, the paste would have been my next course of action.
I’ve done this and now it won’t power on… omg. I didn’t go as far as pulling the PCU out either. 🤦🏼♀️
I’ll try again tomorrow.
Don't worry. It will likely be a simple connection you missed. Retrace your steps and I'm sure you'll have it working again.
My xbox series s fan is really loud i’ve already done a deep clean and it’s still really loud
Noise from a fan is usually just vibrations in the air that's not passing through as smoothly as it should because of the dust build up. If it's noisy when it's clean it might be something mechanical, possibly a fan replacement needed? I'm just speculating. Even when it was overheating my Series S was always quiet.
I have a request, how can I change the internal hard disk with an earlier memory..?
This isn't something I've tried myself
Is the outer grill one piece with the cover?
Hey whilst undoing the part that is connected to i believe is the power was yours really tight mine are and i cant seem to get them undone
I can't remember anything being overly difficult to undo. Just double check there's nothing that needs detaching first
Thank you
You're welcome!
Thanks for the tutorial quick question tho my fan connecter won’t come out and I tugged hard not to hard so I don’t damage but it doesn’t wanna come out any tips for that ? my Xbox barely had dust surprisingly I haven’t opened it sense I bought it 2 years ago
It's always scary with that sort of thing. Just take your time and gently wiggle. You're right to be cautious, these things can break and then there's no going back 😬
Thank u 😁
I took mine apart to clean put it back together now im not gettin any power i took apart to clean because it would beep but then go off now its not even doin that anything I did wrong?
I'd say open it back up and check all your connections. Even if it looks like everything is connected there could be a cable or ribbon not quite seated right. It's happened to me plenty of times.
Why don't they come fitted with removable washable filters ?
That would be great but they aren't designed for user maintenance, sadly. Could easily have something that unclips from the top though, I agree.
Hey i don’t know if anyone will see this but on my xbox to get inside of it the screws wont turn there is a part on the screws thats missing and just wont turn any help?
Are you definitely using the right driver bit?
Excellent thanks. I have dust buildup on the fan so might take it apart. Will the stickers go back on and look like they did?
Yes especially if you warm them up first. They are on the back though so I don't think you'd miss them
If it wasn't for TronicsFix levels 3 series teardown, I wouldn't have been able to clean out my series x turned roach coach.
It's amazing how gross some of these consoles get
Maybe clean your house and get rid of the roaches. That's disgusting. Living like that is 100% a CHOICE to be filthy and nasty.
Hey I dropped a crumb of food on accident through the black part of the Xbox conspire feeling if it was hot and I’m worried it will catch fire will it?
I'd expect it would be fine but if you're concerned and you need to open your console to remove it, follow the steps in this video
I have this console and in my opinion. It runs hot fresh out of the box. I put my face close to the exhaust fan. And you can really feel the heat coming out of this thing. Based on my research, they say it's designed to run hot due to its small form factor. I purchased an external cooling fan which does help a lot. But I really noticed it to run cooler when I game in 1080P. VS 4K 120 Hz. Thanks for the video now. I know how to take this thing apart.
I have found the best way to keep it going is to give it plenty of room for ventilation. Any enclosed space will cause it to overheat and gather dust. I am glad you have found some other ways to keep it cool too!
I have a series S, but it fell and the cover came out of place. Can I return it to the correct place without removing the two screws, because I am thinking of selling it and I do not want its price to decrease?
You'd be less likely to cause any damage if you removed the screws. I'd go with that
Yesss Joe
Does this help with gaming performance? All of the games I play have recently felt more delayed then usual and my xbox has felt hotter then usual.
For me, the issue was having it cut out. I'd say if it's slow and it's running warm, it may be able to operate more efficiently after a clean, but you'd also be worth seeing what free drive space you have and consider situating it in a better ventilated area too
Anytime i try to load one of my games on my xbox one s it kicks me out when the game is loading in or it freezes while i am in the game. How do i fix this problem?
Have you already tried cleaning it like this?
Im 14 but im scared to do that but my xbss has a lot of lag im gonna save up for a xbox series x and ps5
Get the right tools and take your time. Don't let your age put you off but maybe check with whoever paid for the console before you open it up
If the blue stuff is messed up does that affect the Xbox not turning on at all?
The blue stuff? If you mean the thermal compound then yes it's worth replacing
A 1/8th?
is changing the thermal paste needed
If you clean it and it works again, don't interfere with the paste. If it's still causing problems that's what I would try next. It's a relatively new console so the original paste should last well
Does it have an internal speaker like the Xbox one s? I'm asking because mine stopped making the sound when turning on and off, after a blackout
Yes I'm assuming it does, the sound seems to come from the console on this and my series x
@@JoeBleeps tnx for responding, fortunately, mine continues working, it turned off automatically on the option screen i don't know why. And i assume it would very difficult to replace it since it's on the motherboard
Is it normal for my new series s to smell like burning plastic a little bit or doesn’t over hear or anything and game play is fast and fine just wondering should I take it apart a see if anything’s wrong it’s brand new tho
If it's brand new it should be fine. That does sound a little strange though. I'd more likely return it than open it up as you'll be voiding any warranty by doing that
#legend. so good. thank you.
@@facefamousee 😊 you're welcome
Tried this step by step but now my Xbox won’t turn on at all😭 could it be the thermal paste ?
That's possible but if it switched on before, you've probably got a connection that's not properly seated, worth giving it another check first
Did u get it to work ?
@@MikeDavis-ej9fv no :(
Straight to the point love it
Thank you!
Just keep a clean house and then you dont have to do this and duhh the problem just could be the termal p because with that little dust inside the xbox wont overheat
Dust still gathers regardless. And I've always been surprised that this worked as there was so little dust in there! But it's still going strong
What happens if really small insect get into top grid above xbox button or dirt fall inside can it damage console or is it safe ?
It should be okay but if there seems to be a problem, follow the guide here to open it up and remove the debris
@@JoeBleeps Everything seems fine no noise no overheat no freezing/lagging during gaming I just saw that little brown bug yesterday I think its called drugstore beetle really tiny one on top of my XSS and I went for compressed air in can meanwhile when I came back it was gone and I had suspicion it might get inside because that hole is big enough for that type of insect to crawl in even when its just really small
I don’t wanna take mine apart 😢 I don’t have any problems with mine. But I fear anything bad happening.
I'm sure it will be fine
Wow it's built perfect, unlike the PS5 which looks like a prototype outside the cover 😂😂😂
It's an underrated gem of a design. I've not delved inside a PS5 yet but from the outside it's hands down the best looking console of the current crop.
@@JoeBleeps agreed👌
is it just me or does the fan not unplug? i cant get it off
It's a while since I did it but there must be a disconnect somewhere
