Tornado forms over O'Hare Airport live during NBC Chicago coverage

- As NBC 5 Storm Team's Chief Meteorologist Brant Miller was showing a live view of storms over O'Hare International Airport, footage showed a tornado form above the airport in real time.
It's cute how other places in the U.S. react to tornadoes compared to those that live in Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas etc. I imagine it's like how people in those states react to major snow.
Illinois and Chicago get Tornadoes all the time. The Plainfield F5 was one of the strongest tornadoes in recorded history.
You act like Chicago or Illinois in general doesnt get tornadoes.
The circulation appeared to be moving fairly rapidly at around 50 mph or so.
I was at Midway airport during these storms. This very kind lady told us what was happening with the storms.
Fun Fact: The tornado was shot 17 times during a drive-by an hour later.

By the time it reached Norwood/Edison Park just east of Northwest Highway it was retracting as my neighbor and I watched it one or two blocks north of our house. Wow what a day! Great footage

I was just thinking these guys are unprofessional idiots. To be helpful, they should have stayed calm and reported the facts, not get all tongue tied and speculative.
There are plenty of tornado hunter videos on youtube of tornadoes forming. What this news station got on camera was nothing new.

@@GrammerAngelthis was not the leading edge. However the rotation existed but seeing scud clouds get sucked into the updraft base isn’t a tornado. I’m not saying there may have been areas with damage but tornado genesis did not materialize. Rotation was disorganized after the initial few minutes in my opinion then it started to crank.

Nashville, Tennessee was hit by a tornado in 1997, as the now Nissan Stadium was being built. Took out WTVF Channel 5's signal tower was knocked off the air. Grew to an F3 rating then as it approached The Hermitage area. So big cities are not immuned to the tornadic weather

A funnel cloud is not a tornado.
According to the NWS, it was reported as a tornado. A tornado can touchdown without the tell-tale pipe look. It can look like a funnel cloud but what you are used to is debris spin-up, etc. and that can happen without any visible tornado. This one over Rosemont looks though to be an EF-0 quick one. There were apparently a lot of them in the Chicago area today.
@@WilliamTeach17 Yes. That tornado did touch down, it was caught on video. You are only seeing the cloud rotation, not the full tornado which wasn't visible except at the ground. A rather common occurrence actually in early tornado formation.

Circulating air can only be seen when cloud vapor is pulled down or debris is pulled up. What you saw was just the part the vapor made visible.

we saw the same types of clouds earlier in Western Illinois front was moving VERY fast.
This was on the ground. Sometimes you don't see a fully condensed tornado between the funnel and the ground.
This one did touch down. Probably not right when they were catching it, but this one was confirmed by nation weather service later.
Tornados are often fully or partially invisible until they actually start picking up dust and debris. This one did touch down

This was reported by Des Plaines and Rosemont as a brief touchdown EF-0 tornado to the NWS. Yes, this isn't a massive house debris storm, but it is a tornado. That same storm produced a tornado in Campton Hills and Elgin that did considerable damage

I live in Homer Glen (southwest suburbs of Chicago), and near Naperville, there was a tornado warning. Of course, everything pretty much traveled to the north of where I live, & eventually ended up in Chicago.

Yes, climate change is happening. But it’s not uncommon to have tornados in the Chicago area. And sometimes really bad ones. Three really bad ones happened on the same day in April 1967.

And of course the Rogers Park tornado only happened in 2020.

A tornado is by definition a rotating column of air that stretches from the clouds to the ground. The funnel doesn't have to touch the ground in order for it to be a confirmed tornado. If you see anything spinning on the ground underneath rotation it's a tornado
If you can see a dust cloud underneath the funnel, it's a tornado. The circulation may not extend all the way to the ground because of drier air aloft.
