This is, by far, the BEST tutorial I have seen on how to use GIMP. I now feel a like I can actually do something from scratch with just my mouse and imagination. Thank you for taking the time in your first video to go over what each tool was and showing how it worked, and giving the ONLY how to draw from scratch that I have seen after hours of searching.
For those who are using the Windows version, to change the "Input Devices" option, click the Edit Tab. "Input Devices" should be near the bottom of the drop down menu.
Omfg... after years of hating to draw in this program the settings at the start actually make sketching fun and easy. Thanks man, you're doing gods work.
I pretty do the very last one you had and I think this is actually going to help me. I haven't really looked much into the things gimp can do that isn't pretty basic, layers is the farthest I really go. But thank you!
This is probably one of the best drawing tutorials I’ve ever seen it goes into everything and if I doesn’t there’s a link down below. If I had watched this video a long time ago I would have been an art genius by now😂🤣
+Skyella Does Art (Leilani) well you *can* self teach (with internet help) thats what im doing, i umderstand a decent amount of light and shadow, and I can draw realistic people while looking at a reference photo...but the result isn't the person in the reference photo...(I can never get sizes of the people's heads, mouths, noses right so my result looks like a person but not the one I try to draw)
Try measuring out proportions from your reference photo and attempting to recreate the shapes on your paper (draw out faint lines, if you'd like, to make a grid). Nail down a LIGHT LIGHT LIGHT sketch of proportions and shapes, BEFORE doing any shading or detail work. Practice practice practice, and I also suggest real-life study work as well.
This is absolute madness, is friggin outrageous, pretty much everything we need to know to start, a lot of information, need to see this a few times more to get use to all the tools, everything else comes with practice, awesome werk.
Once I changed the tablet from Disabled to Screen. My configuration for my tablet was off. It showed my tablet curser in the middle of the screen but would draw at the top and would switch back and forth between the paintbrush and path tool. Do you know how to fix this? It works fine when I don't input the device but I want the pressure opacity.
11:39 *best part starts here* I really like how it looks so simple from just applying colors in gibberish manner and then with some tweaks it turned into a legit drawing
Wow...this tutorial is EXTREMELY easy to understand and follow. I found GIMP to be a little unorganized at first as well. You are what GIMP-noobs need my friend.
Awesome tutorial! I paint and sketch on paper and just got myself a drawing tablet again and want to try sketching digitally. This video had exactly the info I was needing.
nice tutorial i know these days krita seems to be everyone's choice for digital painting/drawing but it's pretty cool how much you can still do with GIMP, especially useful if you're already using it for photo editing and kind of know your way around the interface
This is great stuff man, I'm just the guy who you refer as "those who are starting out", so thanks a lot for these. Liked, subscribed and wished I could do more. Looking forward to others Gimp tutorials by you!
For anyone finding finding difficulty filling it sketches using the colour tool, make sure on your outline sketch to use a force of 100. This ensures your line art detection is accurate and there arent any blotchy white pixels on your line art.
Um... when I first got this I was confused so I accidentally exited out the art supplies. When I relaunched it there was no more art supplies. Do I need to reinstall it?
I appreciate the time to explain. I found this as a good place to start. I will mostly be starting with a scanned sketch and outlining it soon as I get the tablet I had just ordered.
This was incredibly helpful! I have skimmed through many Gimp tutorials, looking for answers to specific questions. In this and your other basic tutorial I found all the help I needed and then some, presented in a quick and logical format that even a newbie like me can follow. I really, really appreciate it! THANKS!
Hi and thanks for you video, I learned a lot and I was wondering if you’d help me with something? I'm brand new to using GIMP (I’m using version 2.8 and I’ve never used Photoshop either) and a graphics tablet. I am running into a problem with my Huion dwh69 that perhaps you can advise me on. When I use my mouse within Gimp, the brush stroke (or pencil lines) I've selected displays right next to or under the cursor on my screen. However, when I use the Huion dwh69 graphic pen, the cursor and the brush stroke are no where close to each other. When I go back to using my mouse, I’m back to the cursor and brush strokes are once again in close proximity to each other. Any idea how I can stop this from occurring or why this is happening? Thanks Luc
Also instead of the drawing external tablet, I have been using my laptop that is touch screen, it came with a very good stylus and it's the HP Pacillion B&O or something, it's te best tuchscreen I have used. I'm wondering if I still should get the external drawing pad. I don't have to much extra money, hence the reason I'm using Gimp, is it actually better to use external drawing tablet, around the 50 to 80 range? I admit it would be nice not having to go into tablet mode, wondering if the accuracy and overall fell is worth it?? If anyone can give some feed back it would appreciated, I also have another laptop very powerfull and built a desktop I just need to install a Linux base OS onto it, so that would probably be what I use once my desk/office/gaming room is finished, it's like small storage room currently.
Haven't watched this yet, but reading the comments as it loads has encouraged me to watch it :) I'm draw in gimp to make animations, and it's slow, want to speed that up and stay fresh.
Thank you very much for this; I've been drawing on paper and pencil for years and finally decided to take the leap and bought a Wacom tablet and downloaded Gimp. Your tutorial is awesome! Thanks.
I changed the input devices to screen, and my computer just crapped super hard. If it's on disable it works. I'm using a Huion drawing tab. Can somebody help? (Using windows 8)
Hey my tablet is input to my computer and I can use it normally elsewhere, but GIMP won't recognize it. Can anyone help me? I have the Wacom Draw tablet.
How did you move your blue guy around your page at the beginning of the video? I went from "just getting the hang of my new tablet" to "wow this first drawing is too good to scrap" so now I need more room and I want to scoot her down but the move tool moves the whole page and cropping it makes the paper behind the drawing disappear. My GIMP program is 2.10 so is the process a little different now or would it still be about the same as how you did it? Sorry if i'm asking a lot of questions, this is my first drawing tablet and this is all way over my head.
I'm trying to use my surface pro 3 pen in gimp and it's very very faint. I think it's pressure sensitivity is off but unlike at 6:16 in your video my gimp has no sensitivity option. I'm running windows 7 and gimp 2.8.16
I had the same issue, make sure you select the paintbrush tool tool by clicking on it USING THE PEN, i found that if you use the mouse pointer to select the tool, that tool only applies for the mouse, it is weird.....
Let's say that I have an image with a blank background and line art, this line art is like a sketch so it looks like pencil even if it was made in a computer (meaning that it has many shades of grey), and I want to color it. Is there any way in GIMP on where I can get rid of all the whites and leave the blacks intact and the grays as semi-transparent? ... (no race war analogy intended)
So It connected to my Tablet, but when I lightly put pressure on it, it doesn't make that sort of effect. I have the same one as you, but I just don't know what's wrong with this.
Great tutorials, thankyou! You go through nice and fast with just the right amount of details for me. It gives me an overview of techniques and methods I need without becoming boring. Kudos!
I own a Lenovo IdeaCentre B320 all-in-one desktop PC with a built-in touch screen and the following basic specifications below. 1. Intel Pentium G640 Dual-Core Processor at 2.8 GHz 2. 4 GB memory 3. 1 TB hard drive (upgraded from 500GB) 4. Windows 10 (Upgraded from Windows 7) As long as the computer that I mentioned already has a built-in touch screen, I don't have to worry about spending any money on a USB graphics tablet.
The paths thing doesn't work when I try to curve the lines? It just creates new anchors.. I've rewatched the part that you did it at least eight times and I still don't know why it isn't working..
I need assistance. I'm a windows user, I've gotten to the setting "Input Devices," but I see no brush icon. I have a Intuos tablet. There is only "core pointer".
tbh I wouldn't suggest anyone to rely on dodge & burn at all. most of the time it makes the colors look like muddy ass lmao. other than that this is pretty nice for beginners.
I have an Intuos Pro (Wacom) tablet and I was wondering if there was a way to put the canvas onto the screen of the tablet somehow. I also got rid of the tool set thing in the side of the screen and I don't know how to get it back up there.
Ok so you know I do it in the middle east and robbers are you know that I am sure that I have to survive this but I am sure it is in my heart that you are a great person to be a good man but I don't know how do I get to survive the whole world and robbers in my family are a lot more likely than me but I'm still a good friend of yours and robbers who have a lot to do and I don't want you in a hurry
My pen doesnt show up in the dialog it just says core pointer. im able to use the pen and all but why wont it show in the dialog. im using a windows lenovo ultra book
You're a lifesaver Sir.‼️...Even 6 years later...your content is still pertinent today. Excellent presentation my good man.
Just Excellent

Thank you 😂

I only have quartz pointer
My man was last active 6 years ago. Hope you're doing well.

I appreciate this video so much. I'm hard of hearing and I'm not the best learner, so finding this was the highlight of my day!

how to draw on computer: change 1,000 settings and your ready to go!! :D
How to draw in real life: Buy $300 of stuff, then watch 30 tutorials and still be confused on how to draw real-looking chainmail

Sounds great and all, but I've never been good at shading :/

I literally spent 5 hours making line art a different way. Thank you for this, you've saved me a huge amount of time.
Great Video. I've been using the Shifts Click Method for years haha... thank you for this 😄😄
Wow...this tutorial is EXTREMELY easy to understand and follow. I found GIMP to be a little unorganized at first as well. You are what GIMP-noobs need my friend.
Great video , Recently I purchased a XP-Pen Deco 01 10x6.25 in graphic drawing tablet to use with GIMP 2.10 for windows 10. It works well .
Awesome tutorial!
I paint and sketch on paper and just got myself a drawing tablet again and want to try sketching digitally.
This video had exactly the info I was needing.
"we will change the brush size between 3.0 and 5.0"
in other words, 4
Not really. There are 19 possible values between 3.0 and 5.0.
HaaAaa
//_when you were drawing that first thing I thought it was Sollux Captor--_
im doing the input device but there's no paintbrust or pen... what do i do???
When I find the input devices option, I only get the pointer option, I can't change it/draw with my tablet so is there any way to fix it?
nice tutorial
i know these days krita seems to be everyone's choice for digital painting/drawing but it's pretty cool how much you can still do with GIMP, especially useful if you're already using it for photo editing and kind of know your way around the interface

I have no idea what I did, but it started working. Sorry I can't help ;(
I am so damn jealous
Try to close the program, then re-open it.

Brilliant tutorial. THANK YOU
Lets promise 4 tutorials and then just make two and give up
This tutorial is really easy to follow through even though its 5yo. Thanks!
You are badass, man! Excellent tutorial!

Wait is that little animation at the beginning from Homestuck??
It looks like it's from High school musical 2.
eva tronina well I added Eridan and Kanaya onto the gif. It was originally from some movie.
+eva tronina You can't fight the homestuck
I was thinking the same thing x'DD
One of the better tutorials out there. Thank you.
Nothing but the mouse shows up in the'Input Devices' menu. Am I just stupid? Or can someone help me?
Install the driver for your tablet. then restart comp gimp wont register it without a restart for some computers.
Does anyone still use a mouse? 😀

Great tutorials, thankyou! You go through nice and fast with just the right amount of details for me. It gives me an overview of techniques and methods I need without becoming boring. Kudos!
Him: Congratulations, you just made your first sketch
Me: Well, there was definitely an attempt
I own a Lenovo IdeaCentre B320 all-in-one desktop PC with a built-in touch screen and the following basic specifications below.

thank you but why dont you continue to inform us about gimp. this video is perfect. Please come back and give üs information.
The paths thing doesn't work when I try to curve the lines? It just creates new anchors.. I've rewatched the part that you did it at least eight times and I still don't know why it isn't working..
I have the exact same color Wacom Bamboo stylus tip and tablet. Nice.
the pressure opacity thing worked but then I apparently changed something and now it doesn't work, how do I fix this?
Thanks man, this was so helpfule, I've been trying ot figure out how to use gimp and this has really helped me. Thanks again!
I need assistance. I'm a windows user, I've gotten to the setting "Input Devices," but I see no brush icon. I have a Intuos tablet. There is only "core pointer".
+Addicted2Electronics same problem here
so many laptops/ tablet computers today come with pens/active pens... why no mention & only deal with mouse or wacom tablet?
tbh I wouldn't suggest anyone to rely on dodge & burn at all. most of the time it makes the colors look like muddy ass lmao. other than that this is pretty nice for beginners.
Okay so i just got gimp but its a brand new version and looks nothing like this and nobody makes these tutorials anymore.. help?
I have an Intuos Pro (Wacom) tablet and I was wondering if there was a way to put the canvas onto the screen of the tablet somehow. I also got rid of the tool set thing in the side of the screen and I don't know how to get it back up there.
The tutorial is great but now I'm pissed cause idk how tf to use 2.10 and I cant find a tutorial like this for it
Ok so you know I do it in the middle east and robbers are you know that I am sure that I have to survive this but I am sure it is in my heart that you are a great person to be a good man but I don't know how do I get to survive the whole world and robbers in my family are a lot more likely than me but I'm still a good friend of yours and robbers who have a lot to do and I don't want you in a hurry

Thank you!... I have wasted so much time looking at other videos but you are the best. Thank you again
on the second way to draw with a mouse can you still use a graphics tablet?
This is the only video I can find about the blob method, does anyone know if it called something else?
My pen doesnt show up in the dialog it just says core pointer. im able to use the pen and all but why wont it show in the dialog. im using a windows lenovo ultra book
Where is your photo editing tutorial? I can't find it. Please help. Thanks
Can someone pleeeeeeease tell me during 2:10 to 2:12 how did he move his sketch around. I can't figure it out!!!
Where's the sound gone? I can't hear anything (I presume) you're saying...
