What an informative video Nicole. It was lovely to learn something about this beautiful instrument. I wish I could make it to your concert. I hope it goes well.

Is it the same key as the modern alto clarinet?

      Hi Cyberbro,
No, it isn't. The basset clarinet is in A. It's in the same key and at the same pitch as a modern A clarinet but it has the four extra basset notes.
A modern alto clarinet is in E flat.

Hi Eric, Bobo Xu is correct. The basset horn is in F, a third lower that the basset clarinet. Mozart uses the basset horns most famously in the Requiem. It is a different shape to the basset clarinet - bent in the middle with a brass bell.

I thought the clarinet Mozart wrote the concerto had a couple of angles and terminated in a bell, rather than being straight with a right angle box at the end.

Hi Harr W, The instrument which you are describing is the basset horn. This has a slightly angled barrel and and "knee" joint in the middle, and it has a brass bell at the bottom. Mozart uses the basset horn most famously in his Requiem and in the Gran Partita. It is a different instrument to the basset clarinet. We are planning more videos to explain these differences so keep an eye out!

Sorry I'd rather keep my eyes in, not out.
