  • ITZY - From Gen4 pioneers to a slump in performance and loss of status?
ITZY was once the backbone of JYP's Gen4 girl groups, pioneering and shaping the K-pop industry. However, despite their explosive debut phase, ITZY is gradually fading away from the spotlight on the girl group scene
Despite a string of music releases, ITZY has failed to make any significant impact. In 2022, the group made two comebacks, but neither lived up to expectations.
In fact, they were not only unable to compete with their direct rivals, aespa, but were even overshadowed by their younger labelmates. What has happened to ITZY?

People really wanted ITZY to stop making songs with lyrics "love myself, I'm confident, I don't care what others say" but that was one of the main reasons for ITZY's popularity, especially in Korea; many Koreans listen to ITZY's songs in search of that lyric that boosts their self-esteem (one of the reasons why Sneakers is ITZY's biggest domestic hit since Wannabe)

The problem is that the concepts they were given don't fit them. And I get it it's not their fault they are just given the songs to sing but how are you singing about loving yourself and wanting to be yourself when the members themselves go on these extreme diets to lose all this weight just to live up to the standards of the Korean beauty standards. You literally are contradicting yourself. Why sing about it if you're not going to be about it.

JYP should promote the members' individual image and bring ITZY back into the Korean media. Release songs with the same 'I love myself' style that made people listen to ITZY to get a boost of self-esteem, release less comebacks per year but with higher quality, stop focusing on Japan and explore the west (with something that is not "Boys like you")

Strongly agree with you. They should go back releasing songs with the "I Love Myself" concept. That's the concept that people loved them for, including myself. When they released Wannabe, their popularity skyrocketed. It only means that the said concept really fit them. Itzy was indeed a breath of fresh air. Let's hope to hear an "I love myself" releases from them again.

I still love Itzy, but I agree, the experimenting with their identity/style has been confusing. I especially loved "Mafia in the morning" and "Loco" because it was a more mature concept and it fit with their past style but then they released "Sneakers" and "Boys like you" which are so untypical for them and are songs I could've seen TWICE perform, but not ITZY. It seems like JYP just cannot find their identity or doesn't care to do so.

For me, their sudden decline relies on one reason, and that is, their concept. People loved them because their first 3 songs talks about self-love and boosting your confidence, which is rare in Kpop nowadays. Personally, I've loved them because of that concept. But when they released Not Shy, I had this feeling that they're going to a different direction, and I was right. Their next releases until Cheshire sounds generic. It's not as captivating as their rookie days. I think people will lay their eyes on them if they will go back to their original concept. I hope the management will realize that.

Honestly every group is bound to be overshadowed. Aespa themselves aren't even in the spotlight now. Because of the abundance of girl groups debuting, you just can't avoid getting overshadowed. Itzy is just any other kpop group, they aren't Blackpink or BTS. Itzy just leaded the 4th gen because of the lack of girl groups in the past, they were also just new similar to the girl groups leading now. Time will tell if the recent girl groups will be able to maintain their momentum, which I highly doubt. So Itzy is still doing great.

I never said anything about being successful, and I mean they technically aren't in the spotlight, Girls didn't do that well and wasn't a big hit, it did well with the sales obviously but it still didn't turn out to be a hit like Tomboy nor Love Dive. Their comeback taking way too long doesn't help aswell. It's seriously been 9 months and people are literally mad at SM for hiding Aespa, I know they're on a tour but they should've started it much earlier. Groups that are actually in the spotlight are the most talked about and the groups I always see being a hot topic are IVE, NWJNS, and LSRFM. They just finished their world tour a day ago. Also, check out the views on those MVs that the uploader bashed. Cheshire currently has 120 million views and sneakers has 131 million views. The songs were not necessarily bad, they're truly catchy but whether everyone admits it or not, there were stronger songs in their recent album/s that could have been used as comeback songs or title tracks. "Racer" is one or even "Free Fall". I can say the management might have attempted to add a little change to the sound of Itzy, but the risk didn't pay off positively as we see it. Notice how ya'll didn't mention that they managed to get a million sales with 2 albums in one year that supposedly was their flop era?! And the fact that they sold out their concert dates within 10 minutes with 40k still waiting to buy tickets?! They sold out arenas in Philippines two nights in a row for crying out loud. They also signed several new brand deals this year alone. They have the record for longest charting album on billboard amongst 4th generation girl groups and are the second longest charting girl group on billboard after Blackpink..and that song that was considered a flop or kidz bop charted at number 4 on melon and was the highest charting song from JYPE in 2022..and it out charted Girls by Aespa. They were special guests at IU and Psy's concert last year. These are just a few of things they have just achieved. Their company didn't even let them go to variety shows or radio programs to promote Cheshire and they still managed to win at music bank which is impressive!! So many people write these girls off so quickly. Just goes to show that ya'll were never really fans anyways.

Cause people will use the word "flop" when they didnt like a CB despite the numeric success of it, this goes for any group they deem "flop". This channel just click bait the people here without looking in actual facts nor have a valid writing that can backup their claims. Kids this days.
Im quoting the desc. "but were even overshadowed by their younger labelmates".
As much as I like O.O and NMIXX, their debut didnt out chart SNEAKERS for weekly nor monthly.
People even like to clown SNEAKERS when in reality its their biggest earning CB out of everything thus far, this show how dedicated their actual fans rather than focusing in streams. Cause in reality streams doesnt pay your idol, sales is what keeps going for any group plus ITZY just concluded their very first world tour, dont forget the brand deals after this. There is no problem with ITZY, but the problem lies within this people who thinks they know best lol.
Lastly idk why people like to pit AESPA and ITZY to one another, it shows how these TOKEN STAN care much about the novelty instead the group itself.
Again love these GGs and Im glad I didnt listen to this kind of stuff online cause it definitely ruined the fun for people.

For excample, their direct rival aespa. aespa is the perfect example of the mistreated and unpromoted group. they can having 2 months straight with no activities especialy during 2022. The only reason they are still relevant is they have the biggest and the most loyal fandom among 4th Generation Girlgroups that they got from their uniqueness. Their fandom paid for the experiences of their incridible and well-executed concept. That also the reason why they can't be denied by non-fans because everytime something related to AI or Futuristic things, people will remember of aespa because aespa successfully built strong identity. even if you are promoted so bad but you are totally stand out with no efforts among the industry, you will always be save.

You’re being too dramatic, wonder why itzys sales are drastically growing and they are still doing well? Because they are still big and growing bigger. The only thing itzy has lost is the spotlight in the korean GP, which they can get back to if JYPE decides to promote them there better. What itzy needs is individual promotion , promoting the members individually and gaining more fame. Less comebacks thus comebacks with higher quality. Itzy isn’t overshadowed by aespa, they are pretty much on the same level right now. Wannabe, mitm, icsm, feel special, more and more, alcohol free, god's menu were all bops. But then suddenly they started becoming cliche. I mean what in joio siwa is pUt mY sNeAkErS oN? Why did they name twice's album "formula of love" and then kept singing "love aint no science" throughout the song? Why was nmixx's debut so messy? I used to love twice so much but after the feels they didn't get any decent songs. Moonlight sunrise and set me free was an improvement but not their best. 3. ITZY should have released sneakers as a pre release, since the girls wanted to release it. But their english song should have been more like their debut era songs. Cheshire was more of a mature concept. It would have been more well received but JYP didn't promote it enough like sneakers

Seems like Gen 4 will be led by 3 power Girl Groups - (Ive, Le sserafim & NewJeans). These 3 are way to strong and public favourite girl groups. If you ask any korean they no more mention aespa, Itzy but Le sserafim, ive & newjeans. The reason these 3 have made huge impact is their uniqueness -
    1. IVE - Royality, Elegant
    2. NewJeans - Y2K with modern touch
    3. Le sserafim - Powerful, Confident, Supermodel. (Different from girl crush)
Aespa's futuristic avatar concept is pretty unique too, but newer groups already coming out with this concept, aespa can only hold onto the spotlight if they comeup with good songs now. Their songs are not as impactful as before and becoming boring. Jyp lacks extremely in concept, and they can not differentiate their 3 girl groups image now. Unfortunately, they all sound & look same to me. I thought itzy will be different but no. That's why they are fading away. If you see two HYBE gg le sserafim and NewJeans they have their own significant style that keeps them separate from each other. But that's not the case with jyp.
