    To be completely clear here and I stated this during the videos and multiple other times, my intentions were never to attack anyone or any company. It was for informational purposes.
    Just because I have a knife that fails doesn't mean yours will unless it's directly related to the design IE Vosteed button locks for instance.
    Spine whacking a knife isn't the be all end all but it is a test to decide on if the geometry is proper. I usually test towards the tip the middle and the tang. Requiring at least 3 separate tests. To test in various spots because I've had some fail in one spot and not the other.
    If the knife fails it isn't a useless knife (although it may be to some) it's a knife to keep in mind for safety.
    The whole idea is knife safety and awareness. Usually a lock failing is an accidental scenario. It can't be planned or duplicated In a perfect way.
    Since the original lock test video that I released, I've had dozens upon dozens upon dozens of people tell me in different ways how their lock failed on them, I've had it happen to me. Luckily I was wearing gloves.
    Mainly it is for informational purposes and hopefully to be able to correct any locking issues there might be In the future.
    I have plenty of knives, liner locks, frame/bolster locks, button locks, crossbar locks, compression locks that are all solid and don't budge or even have the slightest hint of vibration on that lock. Then on the other hand I have knives in all them categories that fail under even a very light tap (with the exception of compression triad scorpion and shark locks, none have yet to fail)
    I don't like the knives failing but I'm not really on any side, I'd prefer they don't fail, they shouldn't. Unless it's ridiculous like smashing it like a bat on to a table. But light to medium taps shouldn't be failing a locking knife, lots of knives prove that.
    I will put out the information and people can do what they will with that info. It is just my experience and my opinions as always.
    Keep rocking brother 🤜🏻💥

    I've had locks fail coming out of cuts, so I do think there is some validity to single whacks in a few spots - towards the tip, the middle, towards the tang. If it fails a single, medium strength whack that shows an issue with lock. However, I don't trust whacking a knife several times as that doesn't mimic real world conditions, plus you're introducing too much vibration which is probably what will make it seem like it fails. I've never accidentally smacked a knife 12 times, but I have once!
    Edit - you just said the same thing lol guess we're in agreement.

  • @KnivesFAST
    @KnivesFAST 8 місяців тому +3

    I agree with you. There's no reason to whack the snot out of a knife. A couple of light taps should be survived easily, but doing more than that could cause damage. Now. I will also put button locks in a different category. I'm starting to think they're all suspicious. Lol. Thanks

  • @jason11286

    It's basically every hobby community, ever - Something happens, creators latch on because it's getting clicks and views, the "community" goes crazy for a while (which fuels the fire), then it's gone and we're on to the next thing.
    I can get close to seeing the point of the single whack test BUT I'm not going to do it, solely because I don't know what knife I'll be carrying if and when I accidentally hit the spine on something, possibly causing it to close - therefore, it's irrelevant to me. "Uh-oh, this knife failed the spine whack test, I shall never carry it again because it might close on my hand if I accidentally do something stupid." Meanwhile, the same knife has been great for normal use for the entirety of its existence. To me, it's like driving a car into a pole at 40mph and expecting no damage, yet being surprised when there is. Anyway, these are just my opinions, I'm not hating. If people want to beat on their knives, who am I to stop them? 🤣

    With all do respect, I’m a firm believer in the spine whack. If I’m paying an ungodly amount for a so-called hard use knife. I want that knife tried, true and tested for hard use. Hard use just ain’t fidgeting a knife. Hard use is exactly what it is, hard use…

    • @johnruiz6743
      @johnruiz6743 25 днів тому

      I could care less about fidgeting! I buy a knife that I can use as a tool and knowing it won't unexpectedly close on my fingers. Guess that's why I only own one button lock which I treat like a slip joint when cutting materials. I have other knives with more secure locks (Spyderco and Cold Steel for example) for heavier work.

  • @Shanes_Sharp_Sheet
    @Shanes_Sharp_Sheet 8 місяців тому +6

    In my opinion, spine whacking should never be done, but especially on a new knife. You want your tang and Lockhart to marry over time. In the beginning and over time these two surfaces become unique and married to each other. Think of our beloved internal combustion engine, even though there are sets of rocker arms and push rods that are machined to very tight tolerance and all exactly the same. BUT, when working on these you never mix match when putting back together because these parts have "worn" and become married together over time. They are unique to each other now. My point is spine whacking a new knife is detrimental to these parts wearing in and becoming married over time. That being said, spine whacking a knife that is older and the tang and bar have worn in and become married, if you spine whack on that, now you are potentially disrupting that harmony, that marriage.... spine whacking to me is like blade centering.. I fukn hate when it happens, but does it really hurt anything. I'd be willing to bet more people get struck by lightning than having a "good" quality knife fail on them. Thank you

    Personally I'm good if my folding knife doesn't fail with pressure placed on the spine and LIGHT taps on the spine. For me anymore wacking than 1 light tap is unnecessary. But I like thin light weight folding knives that cut extremely well above all else and carry a fixed blade for hard use.

    I think what you said about hitting it multiple times is very very true. Most failures take multiple wacks in testing which makes it even more likely it will never happen I have button locks I can make fail in 2 wacks. I don’t hard use button locks dosent add or take away value for me

      If l am carrying a knife while driving down a backwoods road, during a snowstorm, and l find myself stuck in a position where l have to gather a pile of firewood to keep warm until the next snowplow comes by...l want my pocket knife to be up to the job of splitting and feathering that wood. To those who say, " Just use your cell phone" l guess you have never been in a major storm with power outages, cell phone towers down, and thousands of other stranded motorists tieing up the airwaves.
      This would be no time to find out that l left my "strong lock" folder at home, and the knife with me has a "questionable" lock. I want to know if the LOCKING mechanism on my knife will stay locked under even unusual circumstances.
      To all the haters out there who will say, "just stay in your car until the roads are cleared" have no idea what a northern snow storm can be like. In one storm in my area, cars were abandoned for weeks, sometimes completely covered in snow, with snowmobiles driving over the tops of cars and buses and snowplows clipping the sides of abandoned vehicles & pushing them into ditches, or fields.
      And to those who say, "l always carry a fixed blade, or axe, or lightsaber", l say the knife you carry IS the survival knife you will need in an emergency.
      If you bought a first aid kit and found it lacking in basic equipment, you wouldn't make excuses, you would buy a better kit.
      P.S. Being stuck on a unfinished major highway during winter, hitchhiking in a light jacket, and freezing because no cars were passing by after midnight...l did start to use survey sticks to light a warming fire under an underpass. This stuff does happen, and when it does, you never forget!

    • @Southernknife_addict
      @Southernknife_addict 8 місяців тому

      The bottom line is your average 7.5 inch edc knife is absolutely not meant to or designed to do what you’re describing They’re built to be light and comfortable not survive the apocalypse. But if that’s what you need you can absolutely carry something that will do that. Expecting every knife to be able to do that is completely illogical. A logical solution is keep a bug out/emergency bag in every vehicle you own Being unprepared isn’t a reason to expect a tool to do something it isn’t designed to

  • @prybarknives
    @prybarknives 8 місяців тому +2

    Great video, well said and I agree with most of the points.
    Years ago, when I had just started getting into anything nicer than Cold Steel, people were just starting to point at ZT for failing spine whacks. No idea how far back before that, it goes... But I think ZT may have redesigned their lock geometry, at least in part, because of the drama. So to me, there are definitely upsides to the "test".
    But I think, what you expect from you knife, where you start, in deciding how strong/reliable your lock needs to be. As left said, a button lock is probably not for you if you're planning on beating you knife up. Just understanding that lock strengths vary, and MUST vary if you want variety.
    My main thoughts on this would be-
    I've definitely felt that "vibrate lose" thing Lefty was describing, when spine whacking.
    You shouldn't really be spine whacking your button lock anyway, the contact point of the lock to blade is too small. It's almost certainly going to dent something, usually the plunger.
    A downward pressure test would make sense.
    Lefty is on point.

  • @NevilleSidhu
    @NevilleSidhu 8 місяців тому +2

    I totally agree with you 100%. One whack, thats hard but not super duper hard. A good whack should be the test. It should survive that, and that should be good. It is getting out of hand with people testing locks with 10 hard spine whacks.

  • @toddcarr.
    @toddcarr. 8 місяців тому +1

    Love it when you whack it. Sure there's a hit song in there somewhere 😂🤣. Seriously though I've had a lock fail on me and that's what started me testing out my knives years ago, mind like you said a single whack is all I do at several points on the blade and I open and close it before every test whack just to see if I can trust it or not. Accidents do happen and knowing your tools limitations also requires a bit of common sense. Not using a button lock knife as an outdoors hard use folder is what I'm talking about. But if you advertise it as a hard use folder it should be able to stand up to a bit of reasonable hard use. I agree with you on the middle ground test but within reason of what actually occurs in accidental situations. Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.

    First, I disagree with your suggestion that one impact is sufficient to test a lock, because in some cases a lock will fail if the impact originates in one area, e.g., towards the tip, and in another case a knife might pass that test but fail if the impact is towards the middle or base of the blade. As far as the value of the enterprise, I'm kind of on the fence. I think knives should pass the test because someone might encounter a situation where it fails. At the same time, most of my use is light-duty EDC (packages/cardboard), so the odds of failing a lock are pretty astronomical. In the rare case where I'm doing something more challenging ... I have tougher knives that I know won't fail.

So yes one good tap is all you need. And it definitely shouldn’t fail from a press of the thumb on the spine. The problem with easy failure is that some people’s fidget toy is another’s work horse. If my liner or button lock can’t pass a simple spine wack then something is wrong with that knife. I’m not too concerned about frame locks because your hand provides additional safety. All in all I think it’s a bit disingenuous for creators and makers to act like it doesn’t matter when locks fail a simple test.

    “Spine whacking a knife to test its adequacy as a knife is like dropping a beer glass to test its adequacy as a beer glass.”
    As someone who has been working with metal for more than 4 decades, and is now in the rigging industry where understanding forces is mission critical, it surprises me that this is even a question. Any time a metal tool or machine (or any product for that matter) is used in a manner inconsistent with its intended purpose, any claims about its expected performance are null and void, and for good reason.
    In this case, the spine whack “test” introduces dynamic forces on an tool that’s designed and intended for static forces. Motion (dynamics) dramatically magnifies force. That’s why a fast car hurts more than a parked car. 😂
    Knife Example: Say a knife’s lock bar was designed to resist 100 STATIC lbs. of force. It will not fail if 100# (times the safety factor) was slowly applied to it. But if that 100# was INSTANTLY applied to it, it could easily result in 1000# or more of dynamic force. That’s why dynamic force breaks shit and why this test isn’t testing anything relevant.
    Spine whacking a knife to test its adequacy as a knife is like dropping a beer glass to test its adequacy as a beer glass.
    It makes no sense.

    I think spine whack (within reason) has its place. I'm out in the forest all the time. Say I'm cutting off a small branch for my campsite often I just use my pocket knife since it's always available, regularly I might slip out of a cut and hit a branch or a small tree. If I hit that branch I think that is the same as a spine whack and if that lock fails and I'm in a heavy push cut, that can turn out really bad. So lock up geometry and solid lock up are really important, it's kinda the whole point of a locking knife that it won't close on your hand while bumping something or getting it loose from dense materials.

    When reviewers conduct certain tests on knives, like those torture tests of the Dutch Bushcraft Boys, the knives that they test seldom exit the tests unscathed. Most are destroyed, hence the term tested to destruction.
    If you purchase an automobile, you don't want the crash tests to be babied...you want to see what happens under the worst case scenarios. Same with lock tests on folding knives or strength tests on fixed blades...as Cold Steel is wont to do, test until it breaks. This is part of the reason that Cold Steel has the reputation of building the strongest knives in the world.
    So a gentle spine whack test proves nothing, and any test worth its salt just might do damage to the knife. If you don't want to risk damage to the knife, then don't test it and don't try to say that has a "strong" lock ...it wasn't tested.
    For those who value their knife collections, as l do, then the only solution is to either stay out of the discussion of lock strength... or buy two knives, one for the collection and one for testing. Or leave the testing to those with deep pockets who are willing to break a few knives for the knife community.

      Who is breaking folding knives for the knife community?

      @@LeftyEDC :- A few examples:- Dutch Bushcraft Knives, Cuttingboard reviews, Joe X, Survival Strategies, and many others.
      I understand that you are busy producing content, but your subscribers are busy consuming content and we come across many videos that test knives to destruction.
      Agree or not with the format, many knife enthusiasts welcome videos that put potential future knife purchases to severe tests. This tends to weed out the cheaply produced and highly praised knives, who are unable to keep up with their claims but are still more than willing to take our money, even though they are lacking in quality and durability.
      We expect this level of testing in our automobiles, our appliances and camping gear...and also in our knives (which some of us depend upon for survival in the woods and jungles of the world).
      Far better for a knife reviewer to test a knife to destruction, than to have the general public find out to their personal detriment that the fixed blade (or folder) that they took camping will probably break at the weak tang, or fail at the new "super locking mechanism".

    My opinion on this issue is that if the lock failing the spine whack test is something you don't want to deal/worry with then don't use the knife. Both of my first run Microtech MSI & Stitch that I purchased last year at Blade Show failed the spine whack (combined cost of $500). However, I'm not going to buy the newer versions and I still plan to keep/use both these knives. My Vosteed Ti Thunderbird also failed and I'm still gonna use this one also. I don't see myself using these knives in a way that would cause them to fail. Breaking down cardboard boxes, cutting rope, zip-ties ect should not cause the lock to fail on a folding knife. If you're in doubt of the ability of your folder to handle the job then grab a fixed blade. However, I agree the locks should not fail, especially on midtech knives. And I've watched videos of knives in the above $500 range fail.
