prisoner dilemma is showcasing that if you purely act self interested then you will suffer worse consequences. Thinking that it's in your best interest to confess in this instance typically means you are ratting out your partner in crime for a lesser, but still lengthy, prison time. If you'd get 10 yrs for not ratting and your partner rats but gets 5 yrs you'd think it's in your best interest to rat b/c when you work out the square you find that the %'s are only in your favor if you rat. However, you'd be working against your self interest as the best case is that no one rats and if you just have faith in your partner in crime then you get away with it. So don't rationalize your morality when being questioned by the cops, fuck 12 and know your rights.
The point of the prisoners dilemma is that it is constructed such that individuals suffer the least consequences when confessing, but the group suffers the least consequence when not confessing.
Regardless of what the other prisoner does, it is to your singular benefit to throw them under the bus. You are always doing yourself a favor by confessing on the other. The dilemma is just both prisoners come to that realization, so instead of sharing a light sentence, they share a heavier sentence. But even if you communicate this to the other prisoner, it doesn't change the situation, it is still individually beneficial to rat on your partner. If you got them to agree to not confess, then you can walk away scott free by confessing. Which is the best case, you confess, they dont, and you suffer no prison time.
The point is working towards your self-interest does net you better results, but that when everyone works towards their self-interest, everyone loses. The dilemma is anyone who doesn't act in their self-interest loses the most.
Also, while its called the prisoners dilemma, it does not relate to real life justice, as without a confession or other evidence, they cannot imprison you at all, not just a reduced length of time. So in real life, instead of sharing a light sentence, you'd both just walk free. In that realistic example, its in the individuals own interest to not confess, which is also the groups interest.
Final note, maybe just dont commit felonies and you wont need to worry about the Prisoner's Dilemma at all, its to societies benefit that both of them turn on the other.
my brother played when he was really young, 6 or 7 years old and he was...not great. he didn't understand the game but he knew how to play it from watching his older brothers play. This was in season 1 and 2 when there was ELO, I remember he had the lowest ELO I've ever seen, it was around 200-300. He played Sona or Miss Fortune and averaged like 12+ deaths a game lol

Defecting = leaving your partner to switch sides and help the cops
Cooperating = helping the cops against your partner
You have to understand doublepleb is about 14 iq
In this example the police are kinda NPCs. In game theory you talk about cooperating or defecting from a share strategy with the other player, ie the other prisoner
