Good going! I was wondering if there is some guide bearing on the Z since it reaches down so far. All I see is a long plate though it makes a lot of sense having the cutting down low to keep some of the dirt out of the bearings. Putting the bearings outside of the side rails also looks possible.
There is another CNC table that used chain also. I like their idea of supporting the chain so it doesn't bounce and affect the cut. With a small table like yours I'm guessing that the chain bouncing with the change of direction isn't a big problem. Thanks for sharing.
my thoughts, chain is ok. i think belt would be better for plasma. and i bought screws for my next build but its going to be router.dont need the speed like you do with plasma on thinner material.i have seen some mix with rack belt screw.there is a cool belt build on cnc zone.
my shafts are 5/16 and i put a coupling on it. the outside dim of the coupling is the size of the bore in the sprocket. got that idea from the anna jones guy. build your cnc he does the blacktoe table. and i think he sells spockets and couplings as well not bad priced
@ptcplasmasc11 i use sheet cam and you can set up your tools to what height and speed to move to.i dont have a moving height control. in fact i think i could set the height without a z axis and do good with it. powermax 1000 plasma cutter, sets right at an 1/8" before pierce.but my z axis raise's the torch while moving between cuts. im sure its not the cleanest way to cut but works for me.
I wanted to try a chain type linear motion like this for a plasma table. I didn't like the idea of having it suspended under tension, but rather resting on a rail or within a channel instead
i had ordered the #35 chain and it came in 10 foot length's. but built a 32 by 34 inch table. was easy for me to manage for the experiment proto type. but you can make what ever size you want or have room for. however I have to have my metal cut down to fit in the table. so over 4 foot would be nice but this table fits in my shop. thanks for watching
Nice work! I noticed you appear to be using a four axis TB6560 driver board. Have you had any problems with it ? I have one also but have not been able to run my motors very well with it. What software are you using to control it with? Like Mach3 or what?
You should post what kind of plasma machine your using. are you using a inductive start ... reg hf start or..Blowback start without the need of High Frequency
This is one of the better CNC Plasma table builds I have seen so far, is there a forum outlinning this build? It looks alot less complicated than some of the others out there. Great job.
I watched a lot of cnc builts. on UA-cam so I thought I would post to carry on the good will. no forum on the build. I played it by ear. most of the questions have been asked in the old posts. but if you don't see what you need. I'll do my best to remember. I still have this machine
+vincent starcher thanks!! I think I will start my table with a kit for the stepper motors from hobby CNC. I plan on gather parts soon then building this summer after my shop is finished
cnc zone is pretty cool. i like the free file downloads.my dxf stock pile is growing. and seeing the pictures of other builds inspire me. i have purchased some new rails and more motors for a new build. currently building a new garage for the new fun.\ man cave. close to finishing. so the new projects wont be to far away. this is additive so becarful. seems like i want more and bigger builds. thanks for your post
@FJoeForty i had the same thought.however keeping cost down this way i dint have to two idler pulleys.also this was my first build. the next will be timing belt, this machine will help me build the next. thanks for posting
That drive chain needs some more work, support to prevent stretch, the sprockets don't have sufficient contact with the chain and could skip under load, the wires are drifting about and chafing on the drive chain. Best fix the design issues if you want reliability.
Indeed you are correct on all counts. I haven't changed or adjusted a thing on it other than wire chains. It's still works well then years after its first cut. By all means it's not perfect. Getting ready for a new build because I need more space in my garage. More of a off to the side build. With movable table. So I can use table when I'm not working on metal projects.
i see you got the cheapo ebay chinese 4axis driver there. Have you implemented the fix they put on cnczone? or did the board work without missing any steps right out of the box?
354 oz motors. they were not much more than the 270 oz kit so i got the 354's i have a lot of top weight so i think the 270's would be fine with a better gantry set up. also if your looking to save i think timing belt would be cheaper. thanks for watching
I did this for me. this will help me on other projects I do. I would think if you had one and went to a few local fabricating place's. they would farm out the extra things they don't like or cant complete on time. d rings, machine numbers, etc...
I still have it.still works well. just made a bumper for a friend with it.took the z motor off but if the metal doesn't warp it does great. goimg to make a 3 in one machine. router, plasma, lathe
Any idea which is most reliable drive to use for plasma? It seems to me rack and pinion may be prone to getting grit or other particles in the teeth. I tend to think chain or belt may be more tolerant of that stuff though the rack and pinion would seem more precise in positioning with no play or slop.
What size stepper motors are those?... I'm on cnc zone reading up, and about to do a 4'x4' build byself... but am torn on what size motors I need... My table will be much like yours... very much in fact... just deciding on what type of drive I will use, chain, rack and pinion, etc....... Price is a motivator!

i micro step by 16. so with the sprocket sizes i set my steps per inch around 853 or so.
