Proof that a gifted, talented singer NEVER has to take a formal paid lesson in their life. My dear old WWII Australian fighter pilot friend who sadly passed away in 2003 ADORED her as did all the Australian & American troops based in the Pacific during WWII. My friend was an incredible musician in his own right but had to give it all up for the war effort. Which he happily did. The war over the Pacific was terrible - but Vera Lynn's voice kept those boys all going. I honestly don't think that she knew the impact she had on helping to win the war...she was DEARLY loved...the best singers in the world NEVER had formal singing lessons
When I was a young child in the early 70s I bought a Vera Lynn record. The sales clerk looked at me, tipped his head and said, "My dear child, you have impeccable taste!". That made me happy because in an era where The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were extremely popular, I thought that Vera Lynn was still the best singer of all time. That she was a beautiful innocent soul. She made me cry whether the song was happy or sad. Every single song she sang was heartfelt. Perfection! And I will love her to my very last breath.
I could not help thinking how differently a previous generation faced a war than my generation. Vera Lynn personified the spirit of her times. Mine is the Woodstock generation. Vietnam was our war with body counts and napalm strikes coming to our living rooms nightly through the TV. There were protests and riots in the streets. The songs were hard, distorted and loud. Vera Lyn was elegant and graceful. She was one year older than my father. We have lost the poise of that generation, I'm afraid forever. It is well that we remember a time when we pulled together through adversity and sang together, one sunny day.

At just about 67 years of age, I have listened to Vera Lynn thanks to my aunts and uncles recordings, and of course the telly, but sadly I am wishing I had taken the time to listen more ...... and would have surely benefited spiritually and physically from it~!~ Because just watching this program has actually done that for me~!~ I have spent the past 10, 12 days gobbling up Vera Lynn's musical repertoire, and actually feeling a wonderful uplifting in my soul..... no exaggeration by any means~!~ GOD BLESS YOU VERA LYNN We will all meet again on that sunny day~!~
Listened to White Cliffs of Dover at age 7 or 8. Then my mother dug out two records by her. I loved those songs and played them all the time. I was really into ww2 as a kid. My dad was with the 101 in the Normandy Invasion. I was a music lover and really loved all the old songs from the war. Its all nostalgia now but, oh, the memories. She was great and this tribute was very fitting.

And when she was gone it was truly a light that went out all over the world. I am truly grateful that her songs have been preserved. And I have to mention that the critics who didn't like her are another example of now matter how perfect you are there will always be people who must be jealous or mentally afflicted somehow. whale meat again - I learned to play this on my guitar - and it's quite touching, especially with the drawn-out phrasing suggesting lingering thoughts - and it wasn't written for WWII but was her usual ending song from her music hall days before ? now I see why that song was so significant - if played weekly over the BBC as the ending of 'Sincerely Yours, Vera Lynn' - no wonder it lives in those memories. No 1 album at 91yo ? Wow.
