In this video I take you through My TOP 10 things I love about the Canon R8. What a great camera it is with features that have it knocking on the door of much higher end cameras. With a dummy battery or USB charging, you negate the issues with such a small battery and it means this camera becomes more and more compelling the longer you look at it. The full frame sensor from the Canon R6 Mk ii and a 2 hour record limit means it has the edge over the R5 in that department. I really like the Canon R8 and I think it will quickly become the best bang for buck camera of 2023.

Amazing video! Thanks dude 🙏🏼
I switched from the Sony A7C. R8 is a true Hybrid. 4K60 With full sensor readout and 4.2.2 10bit at this price point is just crazy.
It is amazing. How have you found it for overheating? Any issues?
@@MichaelDrowley i haven't had any overheating yet but im only shooting real estate with the longest clips at just 3 mins.
What are your thoughts on the experience so far?
@@threads6672 amazing. Exceeded expectations.
Great breakdown Michael. The absence of IPB is the biggest shame for me, but I agree the R8 may be the best budget option for video. Canon did a great job with this camera.
Preordered it! Can’t wait,!
Thank for your insight, sounds like a very nice amateur camera that have much potential. C log and 10 bit must be a standard feature in 2023 for camera over 1000$.
Pity that video codec are so limited and is not enabled for external recording, otherwise can be also an interesting prosumer camera.
Great video mate, Glad I found another Aussie UA-camr
Thanks mate! Coming from a fellow Aussie I appreciate it!
@@MichaelDrowley 👍🏼👍🏼 keep up the great work
This is an amazing camera for both video and photos.
This would be a great B/C cam for weddings - especially with the 2hr record limit!
Yeah. 100% would be epic with a charging/power brick.
@@MichaelDrowley If only it used the LP-E6 batteries to make it simple with R5/R6
@@samfregonese Yeah, it’s a bit of a downer but you could make it work
And filming high school sports!
Yeah, the R8 seems like a great b cam imo. I own the R5 (recently sold my R6/R combo for it) and I might add the R8 later down the road, as it would make a great b cam for events and also for interviews/talking head shots.
Yeah, was thinking exactly the same. So good
Canon is had an awesome 2022 and having a great 2023 so far.
My eyes are on the R6 MKii
Me too 😊 sold my Sony and saving up for the R6ii
@MichaelDrowley Great looking CLOG3 LUT! I’d love to get it to use on my R5. I have EOS R as a B cam with only CLOG. Do you have plans to make any CLOG LUT that can color match to CLOG3?
Great video.
What is your experience with this camera overheating?
I need to film continuously for at least two hours. Is this camera good for me?

Thanks so much! I’ve not extensively used the R8 for any long form content. I know that it does overheat in certain scenarios on longer recordings so you would need to dive deeper on UA-cam to find out if it will do what you need for your specific set of conditions.
Where did you get the R8 video specs sheets that you have shown there brother?
Via download link here - www.canon.com.au/cameras/eos-r8
Can u power the camera via the usb port while recording video at 4K@ 10 bit 422?
I believe so but have not tested. cam.start.canon/en/C013/manual/html/UG-10_Reference_0040.html
Im sorry im new. But which canon camera has the All-I codec?
EOS R, R5, R3 - that I know of.
Thats the big issue (IPB) with canon these days that made me switch to nikon and others cause you can now find All-I only in their higher-end cameras R, R5, R3...while even low end nikon, sony, panasonic have All-I codec
Yeah, I realise as well that I made a mistake in my video and the codec for the 10 bit 422 is still only IPB compression at 170Mbps. Yes, it’s better than the non canon log 3 4k 120 Mbps but still not as good as ALL-I codecs in higher end cameras.
The end user won't see the difference. I don't think it's a huge problem. If you shoot Hollywood films, you don't use Canon consumer cameras anyway. For other content there's really no difference to shoot ALL-I or IPB. You make your production more expensive, because you need more expensive storage, but on UA-cam or on consumer devices, there will be no difference at all. I feel it's more techno fetish amongst bloggers now.
good info. any thoughts on how to or best practice to follow to convert h.265 10bit 422 CLog-3 footage to h.264?
Yeah, I use resolve to transcode it by dumping in a timeline and exporting individual clips to ProRes
@@MichaelDrowley what format you export? Prores 422 hq? If so, this is clog3 footage. So then how you color grade it?
Nah just ProRes 422 and LT if I need smaller files. I use my own LUT I developed for clog 3 to get a very good base grade. Available on my website if you need something that just works out of the gate.
@@MichaelDrowley thanks. But if you record 4k, they say h.264 target conversion should be 1.5 times the bitrate of h.265. In that sense while converting h.265 4k, prores 422 hq should be the target isnt it?
@@milanjaniYes if you need to keep the same quality. I don't see a significant reduction in quality going to ProRes. I do see some quality loss in fine detail and focussing around edges going to ProRes LT but some clients ask for smaller files and still want me to shoot in LOG 3 so the colour process and 10 bit 422 is still retained for their editors. If you need the smooth sailing of H.264 editing on a non apple M chipped machine then ProRes HQ is a good option to retain image 'fidelity.' - www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/docs/Apple_ProRes_White_Paper.pdf
My clog suddenly missing and leaving on clog3 option. Is there any reasons why?
Are you in photo mode? Make sure you’re in video mode and clog should be available to turn on/off
Can you use a VariZoom Lanc controller with this camera for filming???
I don’t reckon it will work, but not 100% sure sorry.
@@MichaelDrowley I knew it was a long shot
Hi there thanks so much for the great info, I’ve got the r6 mark 2 and a bmpcc 4K, do u have the sample of the lut you use to match them both? I’m in the same situation as you and also thought of getting the R8 as a 2nd cam. Btw I’ve got the plugin called cinematch, don’t know if you heard of ? Thks n thumps up for e vid 👍 oh btw I just saw the lut, is it the one Canon to rev 709 n black magic raw to rev 709 ? Tq
Thanks mate. My LUT for BRAW to match my Canon Log Look is for sale here - michaeldrowley.com/collections/frontpage/products/blackmagic-raw-cine-vlog-lut
You might need to refresh the page to see a frame grab showing the LUT before and after
Got it thks will try it out later Tqvm been wanting to solve this 👍
@@AT-js6py Just remember there are a bunch of different variables when shooting on different sensors. Like white clip, black balance, colour interpretation, dynamic range, light sensitivity, native ISO. The LUT should get you really close but it will depend on your particular shot scene. Do you use Davinci Resolve?
@@MichaelDrowley yes Michael I use Davinci revolve only
MANY TKANKS MICHAEL :)
R8 is VERY GOOD first/basic FF HYBRID SHOOTER in case of AF and PIC + VIDEO QUALITY, but it's a PITY, that has ONE SD SLOT ONLY and also hasn't HDMI RAW OUTPUT, i.e. not possible any backup :( Also weak battery for longer videos...
in body image stabilization?
@@EddyvadDaddy Nah, no ibis.
does it overheat while shooting 4K@30FPS while shooting for 2 hours?
I can confirm you get over an hour of recording on a single battery without overheating before the battery dies.
@@MichaelDrowley thanks for the info... Hope it does not overheat in 2 hrs with external power like R6MkII..
Even then clog3 10bit is still IPB
Ahhh, you’re absolutely right. Unfortunately I didn’t check specs for that. Although it increases bit rate from 120 Mbps to 170 Mbps and 8 bit 4.2.0 to 10 bit 4.2.2 if you go log or hdr PQ.
Terrible batteries!
Anyone can read the instruction manual. There is no need to make a youtube video about it. This video is like an advertisement.
Thanks for watching 👌🏻
